Took advantage of the glorious weather today ☀️

Here’s a clip I did today, on a pony we have at home🐴

Barney has recently been introduced back into light work after surgery on his leg, which left him completely unable to exercise. After a bath and a clip he’s ready to get going again…slowly but surely 👏🏽

We went for a trace clip as he’s only in light work. Seen as the weather is still slightly cold, better to leave some of the thick coat on his back until he starts to naturally moult his winter coat out

With spring just round the corner, it’s time to get your ponies ready with a fresh clip!!!

Before & After of a clip we did today 🤩

This girl suffers from cushings where the coat grows very thick & fast and slows down the shedding of the winter coat;
So we took as much of her woolly mammoth coat off as we could off including her legs down to a blended knee, finished with a oil soak to seal the coat and leave a nice shine ✨

What a relief she must of felt afterwards! Especially in this heat 🥵

Look at that shine!! No products or oils used 🤯

Can’t stress how important it is to have your pony’s coat prepared for clipping, this means bathing your pony at least a day before your appointment & keeping it clean and dry.
By doing this it’s much easier for me to work with and you get such a better finished look on a clean coat and leaves a beautiful shine! ✨

If you fancy a read…..go ahead this is my step by step guide by MMM Clipping Services

Firstly I always take my time to greet the pony and make them feel as comfortable as possible, by clipping in a familiar stable (mucked out prior to appointment) or area of yard with a hay-net tied up. For warmbloods I usually keep half the rug on as it can be a shock to the system when taking all the coat off.

Secondly I discuss with the owner if they are happy with the clip they have decided on and if it is suitable for the pony’s breed & the amount of exercise the pony gets.

Once everyone is happy, I start to set up my clippers making sure that I use an extension lead when plugging in as this is very important to have enough cable length. Then before I start I check the clippers and oil them well; I turn the clippers on and make the pony known to the noise and vibration feeling on them. I do this until the pony is settled and ready to make a start

When I’m ready and set up to make a start, I begin to map out the outlines in each area such as the top of the legs, around the face, under the belly, across the top of the back and above the tail (this all depends of which clip is agreed on) This way it makes it much easier to take all the hair off at once and gives a much cleaner finish

Every 5-10 minutes I turn off the clippers and oil them again this helps the clippers from drying out/over heating and easier to run through the hair, also your clippers will last a lot longer when doing this

Patting and talking the the pony frequently makes them feel reassured and have a good experience every time they are getting clipped, this helps for future appointments

Sometimes when clipping round the head & legs I use my smaller/quieter clippers for the pony’s comfort and makes it easier for me, this all depends on what the pony is like to clip

When the clip is complete, I brush all the excess hair and loose grease off visible to the eye using a long bristle brush. On some occasions I use a hot oil straight after the clip as this is good to bring up any deep grease in the coat and leaves a beautiful shine!

Lastly I remember to leave my work space nice & tidy. Before leaving I make sure my client both the human and the horse are happy and hopefully see them in a years time for their next appointment 😁
