Two years ago Rob from Wildfire Forge shared this photo of a poignant piece of art he had created that really tugged at my heart.

I don’t have the words to explain the feelings this image stirs up in me, except to say - today I will remember ALL the fallen.

Please take a moment to read the story behind the creation of this wonderful piece, then click on Wildfire’s page and have a look at the truly beautiful art he creates from horseshoes.

"A Hoofprint in Time" 💜🐴🌺 Never Forgotten
~ The final design for the very special 'old n' rusty shoes!!
They are over 100yrs old & were discovered in a quarry near Amiens in France that was used by allied troops as supply storage/billeting on the western front during the Great War WW1, along with other militaria from the period.
Such an honour to be asked to work with these special shoes, I felt it was important to preserve them 'as is' & the client was in full agreement - the shoes are a piece of irrepleacable History.
~ I wanted to create a poignant design as a fitting tribute to the plight that most of the army horses suffered. The shoes are probably from 2 different horses, both fairly light horses -I would guess maybe Cavalry/light draft stamp. There is a front shoe with 4 stud holes & a hind shoe, without studholes. Some of the nails are still present & the shoes are fairly worn out, so I'm guessing the quarry they were found in was used as a base camp, & these may have been removed by the farrier, some 100+ years ago??
~I've worked in collaboration with local potter David at Vinegar Hill Pottery (who I can't thank enough!) to create the clay imprint of the horseshoe, in a textured coarse earthenware clay, to symbolise the mud/ground. The hoofprint, to me, symbolises the past & also stepping into the future.
~The wooden base I selected is made from a tree that would have been just a sapling, at the time of the Great War.
~The shoes have been sympathetically cleaned & treated with special wax, to prevent further rusting & to preserve them.
~The handmade poppies symbolise the immeasurable sacrifice made by humans & animals alike, and also bring hope for a peaceful future.

🐴 HORSES ARE ACTIVE TRAVEL🐴

Help us campaign to include horses, the foundation of our transport heritage, in making equestrian Active Travel a reality. 🌳 📮 🏫

‘The government’s ‘Active Travel’ agency is dedicated to encouraging people to walk and cycle and creating the infrastructure to allow them to do so. The BHS believes that horse riders should be included in the Active Travel plan and is campaigning to ensure they are considered 🐴

People across the UK use their horses as a means of transport to get to school, visit the local shop, post a letter and much more. This should be encouraged as much as possible, especially considering the use of horses for transport throughout history!

We’d love to hear how you ride/carriage drive instead of using the car, or how improved infrastructure could help you do so. 🐎

❤️❤️

“Most horses pass from one human to another - some horsemen and women are patient and forgiving, others are rigorous and demanding, others are cruel, others are ignorant.

Horses have to learn how to, at the minimum, walk, trot, canter, gallop, go on trails and maybe jump, to be treated by the vet, all with sense and good manners.

Talented Thoroughbreds must learn how to win races, and if they can't do that, they must learn how to negotiate courses and jump over strange obstacles without touching them, or do complicated dance like movements or control cattle or accommodate severely handicapped children and adults in therapy work.

Many horses learn all of these things in the course of a single lifetime. Besides this, they learn to understand and fit into the successive social systems of other horses they meet along the way.

A horse's life is rather like twenty years in foster care, or in and out of prison, while at the same time changing schools over and over and discovering that not only do the other students already have their own social groups, but that what you learned at the old school hasn't much application at the new one.

We do not require as much of any other species, including humans.

That horses frequently excel, that they exceed the expectations of their owners and trainers in such circumstances, is as much a testament to their intelligence and adaptability as to their relationship skills or their natural generosity or their inborn nature.

That they sometimes manifest the same symptoms as abandoned orphans - distress, strange behaviors, anger, fear - is less surprising than that they usually don't.

No one expects a child, or even a dog to develop its intellectual capacities living in a box 23 hours a day and then doing controlled exercises the remaining one.

Mammal minds develop through social interaction and stimulation.

A horse that seems "stupid", "slow", "stubborn", etc. might just have not gotten the chance to learn!

Take care of your horses and treasure them.”

Nobody wants to work in the rain, so progress with the next 2 (already reserved) stables continues. The kettle is on to keep the workers going to the time scale 😀
Then a quick ride out in-between the showers 🌧 we luckily stayed dry.
