The unfortunate truth of owning and running a business.

Running a business is really hard.
What they don’t tell you is that it can cause severe stress and anxiety, and drains you mentally to the point of depression in even the most laid-back people.

People will talk about you, compare you to others, use you, they will view you as a service and not a person anymore.

People will expect discounts and people will value you and your hard work less than a big chain store.

You have to worry about if you forget to email/message someone back, are they going to think it was on purpose? Did you disappoint them? Will they hold that against you? When in reality you just can’t get to everyone’s messages and emails.

Starting up and running a successful business puts incredible strain on personal lives and relationships, many of which fail because there is just often no work life balance. You need to be the director, the worker, the admin, the marketing team, the accountant, the cleaner..... All whilst being a parent, a provider, family support, friend, spouse...

There’s a reason you don’t see many people succeed in small businesses after 5-10 years. If they are successful they are overwhelmed. It takes a toll. It’s freaking exhausting. Especially the past couple of years when so much has been out of our control.

Here’s a small reminder that we are just normal people with hectic lives. Be kind, be patient, support small businesses…….and hopefully more of us will stick around!

They are just old!

We still have a very poor view point about dogs in their senior years.

We are still far too accepting of limps, stiffness, lameness, behaviour changes.

We believe that because the dog is silent, isn't vocally making you aware, because they still act excited by the lead, a ball, and will climb up on things that they are ok, or they can't hurt that much!!

We all start feeling the signs of getting older but we should absolutely NOT be OK with accepting it, ignoring it, minimising it.

Our responsibility as dog guardians is to be their voice, not to simply accept their lack of vocalisation as a reliable indicator of not being in pain.

JOINT SUPPORT IS GREAT BUT IT SHOULD NOT BE CONFUSED FOR PAIN RELIEF!!!

We can do so much to help our senior dogs be as comfortable as possible.

Rugs and Mats on slippery floors.
Take videos and go speak to your vet.
Reach out to a therapist, my oldies have, and continue to have had some wonderful Myotherapy treatments.
I have a photizio I use regularly
I think about the type of exercise I provide.
I think about diet and weight management
Watch our for excessive licking of areas or saliva stains.

There is so much more too, this is just a snippet of ways we can advocate for our older dogs.

Canine Arthritis Management have some wonderful information and tools on there page and website people can access for free, you can never arm yourself with too much good information.

Because the most important thing is to be aware, be educated, but don't ever be accepting that gait and behaviour changes are ok because they are old.

We did it! 🎉Since Mid July Our Henry has undergone life changing surgery. He has had a Proximal Ulnar Osteotomy in each front leg 8 weeks apart. He has had his follow up X rays with his surgeon Alan this afternoon at the Ralph and everything is looking really good! We are very pleased with the results and the bones are all healing as we had hoped! We chose to do PUO instead of screws in the elbow to prevent the risk of the screws breaking and the cartilage damage that comes without actual correction of how the bones sit in the joint. Henry should be able to lead a completely normal life once he has finished his rehab. As a dog mom I have been a complete emotional wreck throughout the whole process as putting your puppy through this once is hard enough but then to do it all again to them when they’re beginning to feel better is heart breaking. There were times when I questioned everything and whether what I’ve done has been ethical but I’ve stuck by Henry every step of the way and he has been truely happy throughout his rest with endless enrichment, cuddles, doggy company and always walking him in new places to see and smell different environments. I will always have the most special bond with my boy ❤️. Henry will have a CT scan early next year to see how everything is doing (for my own peace of mind)! For now we will carry on with his lead walks and begin hydrotherapy which he will be so buzzing for! Thank you for all of the support 🥹

Monty and I spent the afternoon exploring the floods on an 8 mile walk and of course hydrating along the way 🐾🍺

This morning our 4 dogs had a physio session with ❤️. It was really fascinating to see Saffy in action, the dogs were very grateful! When Henry is signed off from the vets in 2 weeks we will be working with Saffy to support him getting back to being active again. Saffy is amazing at picking up where the dogs may be suffering from aches, pain and tension even in the fittest dogs. Saffy also has a natural, kind way with the animals she is treating always making sure they’re okay during the treatment which is very important to us. If you’re interested in getting your dogs treated please give her a follow! She treats horses too! 🐴
