Willowhall Cleveland Bays Our journey with this historic breed started back in 2018 when we purchased our first mare.

Based in Suffolk, our aim is to further the breed numbers through breeding, but also to give the horses an education and skills for after breeding.

A massive thank you to all of you who made it along last Thursday. The weather was dry but very windy.
It was great to meet people interested in the breed. Some great enquiries for Willowhall Jim and interest in the driving.
Look forward to seeing some of you out on the road.
From the calendar sales and tea and cakes we raised £130 for the Cleveland Bay Horse Society.

Willowhall Jim out with his bells taking a little passenger Freddie, out for a surprise Christmas drive. Safe to say the 8mile drive made Jim a little tired.

When I grow up I would like to be a sleigh horse. Pretty please!!
Willowhall Cariad (Rosie) not fussed by sleigh bells.
Keep your eyes peeled for some Christmas fun here with the Cleveland’s in Suffolk

Another installment on Willowhall Jim and his training journey. Last weekend the crew got Jim to his first ridden show! With lots to look at including some very unpopular pigs he coped well with Christmas trees, tinsel and bells on the other horses. He showed us a lovely walk and trot but canter proved to be too exciting ! Dan very wisely decided to omit the canter part of the show for now and focused on keeping it a positive experience for all involved.
Exciting things to come in the future for this stallion.

A bit behind this week but last Sunday ourselves and Willowhall Jim took a huge step in the driving. Our first official lesson off the farm. It was organised by the indoor carriage driving as a winter training with Mike Daniell.
What a fantastic day. Learnt so much.
Jim was a bit excitable as horses in the paddocks were right up against the arena and a field of outdoor pigs the other side. (Jim has never seen a pig)
He got very hot a sweaty in this lesson as most of it was done in trot.
Very proud of him.

With all the very wet weather has meant no turn out for the herd. As you can imagine they have a lot of energy. Willowhall Jim being the worst, so a weekend where I didn’t have a groom for driving, the saddle was on and a few miles covered.
Found a new to me, ride tracking app, Equilab. First impressions are good for the free version. Will see how it fairs for the driving side of our training. A nice feature is that it has safety tracking for when you out alone.

In total we covered 13miles this weekend. 5 fast miles on Saturday and 8 leisurely miles on Sunday.
Jim is now tired but getting fitter.

Do you have any other riding apps worth trying?

It’s been a while since we have posted anything here about the horses.
As most found out the summer didn’t play ball which meant that we were doing hay for 6 weeks and doing straw and doing full time jobs inbetween. Now that everything has calmed down we can play with the horses.

The white rope around Jim’s neck comes from the cavalry and is known as a picket rope. It was something I learnt last year when doing the historic photo shoot in WW1 uniform and it is such a great idea plus very handy on all levels. Keep an eye out on a post about it and how to tie it.

Our stallion Willowhall Jim (Penrhyn Tsarina x Brackenbrae Stormcloud) had to multitask today. A 3 mile ride from the yard to collect a fresh carriage. drop the saddle off, put on the harness and drive a 4 mile route back to the yard. Very impressed with the 4 year old to swap disciplines without any issues.

Penrhyn Tsarina had a play in harness as well but to teach Willowhall Cariad (Penrhyn Tsarina x Hallhouse Gladimere) the ropes in driving. First time driving them as a pair with Cariad having a basic harness on for her to get the feel.

So pleased with the weekends playing. The Cleveland Bay horse is definitely versatile and quick to adapt.

Congratulations to all who made it to the CBHS breed show yesterday. The horses all looked fantastic.

So disappointed we didn’t make it. Jim went lame on Friday and had an abscess blow out of his heal on Sunday.
He will go to a party before the end of the year!

Hi everyone, I wanted to post a little something. As we have just become parents and in the spirit of Fathers day. A huge thank you to my husband for being the best support for me and our son. Here is to many more years of love and as you once said in the words of buzz lightyear 'to four in hand and beyond !' Hopefully your dream will come true sooner than you think.

May Update at Willowhall Cleveland Bays.

Show season is upon us even though we still have a bitter wind blowing making it still feel cold and the odd winter coat still present.

Willowhall Cariad (Hallhouse Gladimere x Penrhyn Tsarina) came 2nd in the young stock at Royal Windsor.
Then at the Suffolk Show was 3rd in the young stock Rare breed class.

Penrhyn Tsarina went for an outing to the Suffolk Show as well, was 1st in the 4 year and over Rare breed class, then went on to become champion rare breed 2023, and went forward to the supreme interbreed championship on the second day. Not placed in this championship but it was a very strong class with 9 other fantastic horses.

Willowhall Jim (Brackenbrae Stormcloud x Penrhyn Tsarina) has had a few pictures done for his tinder profile by Tierney Hill, (many thanks for doing this) Jim is available for limited live cover for 2023.

Willowhall Jim having a breather from his driving lesson. He has come a long way from the young c**t. When he behaves like this it's hard to remember he is only 4. Just need to get one more then the dream of 4 in hand could become a reality, whether it be stallion, mare in foal or a gelding they will drive!! (Just won't mention it to Elaine!!)

Willowhall Jim stretching his legs with his first canter in harness. Glad it was a sedate pace otherwise new underwear would be needed!!🤪

Well its all been busy here is sunny Suffolk for the month of March. after a very dry January and February, the rain came and has made everywhere very wet.

Willowhall Cariad (Rosie) grew up today and ventured out to her first show as a 2yr old. Leanne Shadbolt having the lead today in practise for Windsor. We still dont know which one winked at the Judge today to get the comment Hello Miss Bright Eyes!!!😆
Congratulations to Leanne for qualifing for the senior handler at Arena UK

Willowhall Jim has had a variety of different activities, mainly been ridden to get fit, but this weekend we put the harness back on him to get him ready for a drive in an arena next weekend. He enjoyed his splash through the puddle, seemed like a good idea at the time then i realised i have to now clean the harness.🤦‍♂️

Been another busy few weeks here in sunny Suffolk.
WillowHall Jim is still learning that being a riding horse isn’t all that bad.

Penrhyn Tsarina just enjoys having a good mouthful of food and driving. (Today she didn’t think too much of her new partner)

Willowhall Cariad (Rosie) is now back with us after her year in rehabs. Full of beans, but at 18months old she can start a little desensitisation and learning the commands for driving.

Elaine’s riding horse has had a rough few months with what started as bad colic, to having a week in Rossdales and diagnosis of glandular gastric ulcers.

Below are a few pictures of Tsarina and Rosie having a bit of ground driving training. This breed never ceases to amaze me how trainable and east going they are. I think Rosie is going to take to driving just like Tsarina did.

Good weekend doing some driving training with Penrhyn Tsarina.
Finally got the harness all set correctly following a visit down to Blue Horse Equine to get a few parts. The main issue we had was, we were unable to get the shafts low enough so that the game hooks were above the shafts. Many thanks to Tricia for sorting those out.

It’s been a very cold weekend in Suffolk this week. With clear nights brings some beautiful days. Slow start today with a lot of fog but worth the wait to share it with these big bay ears. But can you guess who’s they are?…
