🏃💨 Zooming into the weekend
Lovely video of Molly with the zoomies!
Molly was seen at Swift 2 months ago with spinal pain, where she had a MRI. Molly has been on exercise restriction for the last few weeks and as you can see she is feeling much better.
Hope everyone has a lovely weekend ☀️

A day in the life of a Medicine Nurse 🩺💊
- We start the day with our morning coffee ☕️
- Then we head to morning rounds to assess and examine any patients with the vet. We will also discuss our plan for the day with any procedures they require.
- We set up any procedure rooms
- Assist the vet with re-check appointments i.e taking blood samples
- Procedures then take place with the use of diagnostic imaging: ultrasound, x-ray, CT and MRI
- Prepare samples to go to the lab
- Calculate and administering any medications that are required; pre, during and post treatment
- Ensuring patients recover safely from procedures
- Full cleaning and restocking of the rooms used
- Assisting with any emergencies/procedures that may come during the day, ranging from critical and unstable patients to current patients under our care that require further assessment.

Clumber spaniel Woody was out running across fields, when he screamed out and went acutely non weight bearing lame in the left fore. There was no known trauma. X-rays at his referring Vets had shown a severe Y-fracture of the left elbow. He was dosed up with pain relief and referred over to Swift, where he was admitted by surgeon Bob Pettit.
A CT scan was performed under general anaesthetic. This showed a bicondylar humeral fracture of the left elbow, with medial butterfly fragment, low down in the humerus (T fracture), causing several small fragments.
On the CT scan, it was evident that there were early signs of HIF (humeral intercondylar fissures) and the back of the right elbow as well, increasing the chances of a fracture in the right elbow in the future if not addressed.
Bob took Woody to theatre and had to make a surgical approach to both sides of the left elbow. With difficulty due to the small amount of intact bone stock, the fragments were reconstructed and the elbow was rebuilt with a combination of 3 plates, screws and a large lag screw across the two condyles.
Woody was strictly rested for the next 6 weeks, and when he came back for his post op x-rays to check on the healing of the left elbow, Bob placed a prophylactic screw in the right elbow.
After a few hiccups along the way, when Woody has needed some extra pain relief, he is now doing very well. He is walking with minimal to no lameness, is exercising well and is off all medication. Well done Woody!

Following on from yesterday’s post about Harley, here’s a video from May. It was Harley’s first walk since the 4th January was documented by his wonderful owner.
This is what they had to say about his case:
“It has been a long journey for mum caring for him 24/7, wheeling him round Harrogate in a buggy like a crazy dog lady and taking him for weekly hydrotherapy.
All her and Harley’s determination paid off and 2 weeks ago, Harley took his first steps since his illness.
When Harley was diagnosed, we were not aware of many other dogs who had recovered from the illness and we hope that Harley could be a good news story for anyone else whose dog ever suffers from this horrid illness.
Huge thanks to everyone at Swift who looked after Harley during his time with you, particularly Laurence, Rory and all the nursing team.”
Happy Vet Nurse Awareness Month 👩⚕️🐶
