As well as looking after all these little hoglets, we’ve had two releases in the past few days…

🦔 Biscuit returned to Arbroath on Sunday, to a lovely hedgehog-friendly garden VERY close to where she was found out in the day and being attacked by a crow 🏡🦔🌿

Thanks to everyone who offered Biscuit a garden for release. Thanks to Carol and Kenny for transporting and releasing her and taking some photographs 🙏🏻

🦔 Harriet returned to Strathmore Primary School, Forfar yesterday - this time to the wildlife garden rather than the playground where she was found lying motionless one morning. There are log piles, plenty of bushes cover, lots of beasties, and a lovely, big hedgehog house full of straw if she decides to stay and easy access if she decides to leave.

Thanks to Fiona Butza and to our volunteer, Helen Russell, for helping to make it happen 🙏🏻

Stay safe Biscuit and Harriet! ❤️🦔🦔

🙏🏻 APPEAL FOR HELP!! 🙏🏻

Can anyone take a look at one of our incubators?

It’s currently out of action - it’s not holding temperature. It’s a second-hand Brinsea TLC-40 and I don’t know how old it is but the company do sell lots of spare parts if someone can figure out what it needs 🧐🔧

Please pass on to anyone you think could help and share too 🙏🏻

Little Tiny Tempah has been feeding well from a syringe and he’s even started lapping the special formula already!

“I’m a big boy and I can feed myself” 😊

I don’t want to shame anyone, we just need to raise awareness so please read and share …

Someone had seen a hoglet lying on the path near Glendoick Garden Centre on Wednesday - they picked it up and took it home thinking they could look after it themselves. How difficult can it be???

After 24 hours, when they couldn’t get it to eat anything, they realised raising a hoglet must be a lot more complicated than they initially thought so they called BHR for help because they didn’t think it would last the night 😢

I obviously advised it should be brought to the rescue straight away. It was transported, and looked like it had been being living in, a hat. In the hat there were some mealworms, a few crisps, and a tiny little scrap of a hoglet 😳

He weighed just 63g and he was absolutely ice cold and lifeless. I thought we were too late, the organs would be shut down and we would be fighting a losing battle 😢

But fight we did - Jess and I warmed him up in one of the small portable incubators that were recently donated and are now stacked up on a trolley in the rescue. Then in the early hours we administered sub-cutaneous fluids and got him to take just 1.5ml of a rehydration drink from a syringe. Then with the faintest of hopes, and after all the other hoglets were fed, we went for a few hours sleep realising he probably wouldn’t still be with us in the morning 😔

Here he is in the hat. We actually placed him back in the hat yesterday for this photo because the moment he arrived we didn’t stop to take photos - we immediately got to work trying to save this little mite’s life ⛑️

The next post will show how he’s doing now, less than 48 hours later.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DON’T TRY TO LOOK AFTER A HOGLET YOURSELF 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
These baby wild animals need someone with the equipment to provide the right conditions, specialist food, and expert care so GET THEM TO A RESCUE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE 🚑🦔

🦔🏡 HELP GET BISCUIT HOME 🏡🦔

✔️ Do you live in this area of Arbroath?
✔️ Do you have areas of cover in your garden?
✔️ Do you have hedgehogs visiting already?
✔️ Are there gaps for them to come and go?
✔️ Do you have a hedgehog house or could you put one in your garden?
✔️ Are you willing to put food out for at least the first few days?
✔️ If you have a dog, is it one that shows no interest in hedgehogs? Do you take it out to the garden on a lead after dark?

🦔💕A big thank you to Audrey for the gloves and syringes received yesterday.
They are much needed right now with so many hoglets needing our care day and night 🦔💕

😁 Well done Noah! 👍

Well it’s been a very busy at BHR with babies ❤️❤️ it’s tough work but it’s very rewarding… babies need specialist care so please never try raise a baby or any hog by yourself they should be handed in to the professionals 🦔❤️

When I saw this mug, I had to buy it for our Jess 🤩I’m sure you’ll agree - the likeness is astonishing!

If you eat any Pringles over the next few days and weeks, could you save the lids for us?

They’re perfect to use as dishes for hoglets and we don’t have enough 👌🏻

18/07/2024

The little hoglet from Parkhill, near Arbroath, has been named ‘Chicken Little’ by our volunteers because he was so keen on the chicken-flavoured rehydration drink we use.

His wound is already looking a lot better - thank goodness all the little visitors (maggots 🤢) were removed. If even one gets left behind, it will start to eat the hoglet alive. They don’t just feed on dead flesh, they keep going. Removing all the fly strike is probably the most difficult job for new admissions.

He has a good appetite. This was him in his small incubator lapping up his sloppy mixture of puppy mousse and puppy milk last night with ‘Mum’ keeping a watchful eye 😍

You’ll never guess what arrived last night …

… another Ardler hoglet that’s more than likely to be a sibling of Rosie’s.

This one arrived lovely and warm and looking quite bright so they were fed and put in an incubator together 💕🦔🦔💕

Both are doing well this morning.

Ready for some better news?We do love a good weight chart here at BHR 📈 🤩

Rosie’s sister sadly passed away this morning 🦔🌈💕

After presumably being without mum for an extra couple of days the odds were really stacked against her 😢

It’s been another busy day at BHR today 😅 I’m sorry if I wasn’t able to answer your call or reply to your message. I think we did manage to take all the hogs in though.

With all these little hoglets the knitted ‘Mums’ are being put to good use again 😊

Sadly Rosie lost her brother Jim this morning but she’s doing really well and she’s now been joined by what’s probably her sister - another female hoglet found close to where she was rescued. The new arrival was so cold but she’s been warmed up and she’s now snuggled in with Rosie 💕🦔🦔💕

Another little one came in today - a male hoglet from near Arbroath. Thanks to Grace Greig for getting help for him and to Susan Francombe for being his hedgehog ambulance 🚑🦔 He has a small puncture wound on his back. The flies had laid eggs and some had already hatched but Lisa and Helen did a fantastic job of removing them. Keep everything crossed for him 🤞🏻

We had an old friend pop in with some PPE from HogsCroft Hedgehog Rescue so I put her to work, of course! It was lovely to see Eithne again 😁

Wildlife rescue is an emotional rollercoaster but we must keep going for all the hedgehogs and hoglets that need our help … 💪🏻

New arrivals Rosie and Jim are desperately trying to fight off a gut infection. Rosie isn’t quite as sick as Jim. Hopefully we’re not too late 🤞🏻

Marilyn Neave contacted us for help when these two were spotted out on their own without mum near Ardler Community Centre yesterday.

Despite not driving herself, Marilyn managed to get a lift from a friend to bring them part of the way to BHR. She then passed her precious cargo on to Jacky from our volunteer drivers group for the rest of their journey. Thank you both! 🙏🏻

The volunteers have all fallen in love 💕🦔🦔💕

‘Rowan’, a male from Montrose - terribly thin 🤞🏻

A little hoglet from the Kirkton area of Dundee 🤞🏻

Two more little hoglets from behind Ardler Community Centre, Dundee 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Please keep them all in your thoughts 🦔🦔🦔🦔🙏🏻

We also had an injured hedgehog from near Balgay Park whose wounds were sadly too severe to recover from 🦔🌈😢

We are most definitely full now!

Quick updates on the rest of our hogs on another incredibly busy week at BHR … 😅

🦔 Hamish, the one-eyed hog, was finally released in a lovely, hedgehog-friendly green space in Arbroath on Thursday night 👋🏻

🦔 Molly was also released on Thursday to the quiet spot on Balunie Drive, Dundee where she was first found. She left us at twice the size she was when she arrived 👏🏻

🦔 Maple, from Perth, has finished her treatments and should be ready to move outside 👍🏻

🦔 Boss is still his usual delightful self but I’m afraid his swelling hasn’t gone down any 😔

🦔 Hilary, from Balunie Gardens, Dundee has been here for over a week and I don’t think she’s had a mention. We were very worried about Hilary because she wasn’t eating but I’m pleased to say that she’s up and eating and drinking on her own and starting to gain weight now. Thanks to Michelle Kerwin for getting help for her 🙏🏻

🦔 Knuckles, found at Monikie Primary back in April, has been moved outside and is doing well. We think he only sees out of one eye but no daytime appearances so far 👍🏻

🦔 Arbroath hog, Biscuit, moved outside a few days ago and she’s doing fine. We need to make plans for her release 👍🏻

🦔 The children at Strathmore Primary in Forfar chose ‘Harriet’ as the name for the hedgehog found lying out in the open outside the school. She’s doing really well - an almost empty bowl of biscuits every morning. She can move to an outside run tomorrow 👍🏻

🦔 Shrinky, from St. Andrews, is a wee miracle! She’s fighting off all of her issues and she now weighs over 700g. When she arrived she was only 312g 🤩

🦔 The hog from Traquair Gardens in Ballumbie is now called ‘Sam’. She’s doing fine. Her weight is bouncing around a bit so we just need to be sure there’s nothing else going on with her 🤔

🦔 Hannah Farquhar was concerned about ‘Mr. Pickles’ who she had seen in her garden in Monifieth a few times. The hedgehog was brought to us by Tom, who walks Hannah’s dog and was checked over. The female was in good shape, bright-eyed, and she felt warm. There were no signs of injury, her breathing and her mobility were good so the hedgehog, now Petula, was returned to the garden. Hannah will keep an eye on her and can call BHR if needed 👍🏻

We had to pass Luke, from Leuchars, on to Alison at HogsCroft Hedgehog Rescue this week because we were full - Scottish Hedgehog Rescues Alliance (SHeRA) in action once more 💪🏻

Thanks to each of the finders who seek help for their prickly visitors and to our volunteers for taking such good care of them while they’re here 🙏🏻

Sorry to those who called about hogs we weren’t able to take in - there just aren’t enough rescue spaces to cope with demand 😔

Sad news …

Rosanne Hunter contacted us about a hedgehog she’d scooped up after seeing him walking round in circles at the bottom of her drive. She brought him in from Arbroath yesterday afternoon.

He had an infected wound on his head, he was very thin, and his breathing was laboured. He had obviously been struggling for a while 😔

He was warmed up slowly and given pain relief but sadly passed away soon after 😢

No more suffering, Horace, RIP 🦔💙🌈
