Can you be a NEWSPAPER HERO for us? This is an old video (obviously done specifically for someone) but it shows you how we need torn newspaper for anyone who can help us by doing some every so often.
Most important things are:
1 . CLEAN NEWSPAPER ONLY… no magazines or circulars - the newspaper is absorbing and warm.
2. REMOVE staples - we don’t need additional injuries to you or the hedgehogs 🦔 ❤️🩹
3. Papers MUST be cut in half before ripping or the strips are too large and we end up not using it. 😩
4. Don’t be tempted to try to rip too much in one go … just a few sheets at a time works best! Trust us on this one 🤣🫣
We are so grateful for bags of ripped newspaper as it saves us valuable hours!
Oh my goodness Trevor 🤣

Update on Baby Trevor ❤️ 💪
DO NOT MARK WILD ANIMALS.
The hedgehog may be Britain’s favourite mammal and luckily there are lots of people out there who feel passionately about their local population however there is a fine line between supporting your local population and interfering in a way which is completely wrong.
We should only be intervening with Wild Hedgehogs as an absolute last resort.
Sadly, the humble Hedgehog has little defence against humans who wish to pick them up and interact with them.
If you care about your Hedgehogs, please ensure you are not overstepping the mark and actually causing more harm than good.
They are not your hedgehogs but wild animals that need to be respected as such.
Colour marking could:
- lead to rejection of a hoglet from the nest or litter
- increased risk of predation
- toxic poisoning
- skin irritation or chemical burns
Please share this message far and wide.
Marking is done for your satisfaction and not in the best interest of the animal.

Is it dinner time? Oh good 😋
Robin gained his freedom last night. He was found as a tiny baby next to his deceased mother 💔 but despite his sad start he’s thrived with appropriate care. #rutlandhedgehogrescue #wildliferehabilitation #hedgehogrescue
How gorgeous is this? This is one of our recently released Market Overton Hedgehogs making their way through the undergrowth ❤️❤️
Thank you for sharing Liz 🥰
Just a little trip around the rescue to show you what full looks like. 🦔❤️🦔❤️🦔❤️🦔
Cottesmore Hoglets - Dusty, Rusty, Sugar & Spice
Our little litter of 4 are growing well and are finally more stable. Obviously things can still take a turn because I am sure some parasites are lurking but I will keep looking 👀 🤔
We have had to split them into two pairs this morning and it won’t be long until we will have to have a cage each. 🫣😩
Number 329 working out what he’d like for dinner tonight… 🤔
The Royal Canine Mother and Kitten biscuits soaked in water and Oralade appears to be the clear winner! Eat up little one, you need to build up your strength.
Little Bert is up and trying hisBrambles Pet and Wildlifee semi moist. This behaviour is called self anointing and although no one is exactly sure why hedgehogs do this it is a common response to new tastes and smells.
The noise you can hear is theBrinsea Products Inc..incubator that’s providing him with supportive warmth.
Update on our Cottesmore babies.
It’s my birthday 🎂 today and all I really want is for these four to start improving 💔

5 NEW HEDGEHOGS IN 24 HOURS
(4 from Cottesmore and 1 via Oakham veterinary hospital)
That’s us full before we actually opened again!
You’re in my way sleepy head!
Little 319 is hang on in there but she’s been consistently loosing weight. You can see here how skinny she is. This is always the hardest week for a hedgehog as unwell as she was on arrival.
The battle between her internal parasites 🦠, the medication to tackle these which is aggressive on her weak body, her desire to survive and our dedicated care is like a fine balancing act.
We hope she’ll start to improve now she’s completed the first round of medication but it’s too early to say.
If you’d like to donate to her care you can donate by PayPal, BACS or donate directly onto our account at Rutland Veterinary Centre.
