⭐️Under Care-New RCVS Guidance 2024⭐️

The new guidance requires an examination of your animal to be performed before prescribing medication.

Once an examination has been carried out, it may be possible to prescribe for up to 6 months depending on the type of medication required.

The key changes that will affect owners are:

All antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals and controlled drugs require an in person physical exam by a veterinarian.
This applies to all antibiotics, including oral, injectable, and topical (creams and eye ointments). Antibiotics cannot be given based on photographs or videos only - a physical examination of the animal is required legally.

Other POM-V’s e.g. phenylbutazone (Equipalazone®) or pergolide (Prascend®) may be prescribed after a horse has had a physical examination or, in certain situations, a virtual consultation with a veterinarian. Horse wormers e.g. Equest pramox®, Panacur Equine Guard® and Noromectin are POM-VPS category medicines and dispensing legislation is unchanged.

The guidance is an important step towards ensuring responsible antimicrobial use and reducing the veterinary impact on the wider issues of global antibiotic resistance, decline of insect populations and the potential misuse of controlled drugs.

Vacancy – Equine Hospital Receptionist

Based at our Shelf Equine Hospital, Halifax West Yorkshire

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons for the above post.

This is a full-time position on a shift pattern basis, to start as soon as possible.

We are looking for the right person to join our ever-growing, friendly receptionist team. The right candidate will provide a professional and efficient reception service to clients and staff alike, ensuring a high standard of first point customer service. The right candidate should also be looking to further develop their customer skills in a fast-paced ever-changing environment.

Key responsibilities will include:

· Responding to all incoming correspondence – in person, via email and telephone

· Ensuring efficient communication between clients and veterinary surgeons

· Updating clinical records

· Taking payments

· General admin duties

· General housekeeping in the reception area

Skills required for this role:

· Excellent customer service skills

· Proven experience working in customer service from previous employment

· Good IT skills, to include the following programmes: Windows, Microsoft word, Excel

· Good initiative and self-motivating

· Good equine knowledge, previous work with horses would be desirable.

· Literate and numerate with a good level of education i.e. to GCSE level or equivalent

The successful candidate will have strong customer service skills and should have a warm friendly manner when dealing with clients. It is essential that they be able to manage their workload in a time efficient manner.

🌟Our little Super star🌟
Meet Tommy 🐎

🩺Tommy came in to the hospital a month ago with suspected sycamore poisoning/atypical myopathy .
On arrival it was clear that Tommy was very sick, he had already started to display symptoms of muscle stiffness, weakness, lethargy and had extremely dark urine. After running a haematology and biochemistry blood profile, it was clear just how sick he was. His CK and AST markers were so high our machine couldn't read them, his blood had to be diluted and the bloods repeated. After a small amount of maths the CK and AST levels worked out at a whopping 88000u/L (VERY HIGH). These markers are used to assess the amount of muscle damage caused by the toxin Hypoglycin A.

💉Tommy was quickly placed on IV fluids, "Dilution is the solution to the pollution" as we like to say!
Tommy was also tubed with charcoal to try and absorb any remaining toxins, as well as liquid paraffin again to limit uptake of the toxin from the gastrointestinal tract.

Tommy received a cocktail of vitamins daily and round the clock care from our fantastic team of vets and nurses. Despite his poor prognosis, Tommy kept fighting and against all odds pulled through.

Tommy was discharged home 2 weeks ago and is living his best life . We wish Tommy and his owners the best of luck for the future!

A part-time position is available for a clinic assistants’ role at Hird and Partners Cheshire.
This is an excellent opportunity to be part of the team at our equine clinic in Cheshire.
-Days would ideally work on a two-week rota with the first week being Mon, Tues & Friday and the second week being Mon, Thursday and Friday. This is to work inline with our busy lameness clinic days.
- start/finish times can be discussed.

- Experience of working with fit competition horses is necessary.
- On the job training will be provided.

Duties include:
- Some mucking out and yard maintenance
- Handling a wide variety of horses including stallions, youngstock and foals

Wow, what a whirlwind first few months for us here at the Hird and Partners Cheshire Clinic!

The clinic has been bursting with Christmas spirit and while things are (slightly) quieter as we approach Christmas, we wanted to take the chance to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year🎄🎅🏼

We opened our doors earlier in the year and have been overwhelmed by the warm welcome from both new and existing clients. The Hird and Partners team are so grateful for all of our wonderful clients who have visited. We have thoroughly enjoyed working with and getting to know all of your horses and ponies🐴
