With the weather like it is there are loads of heat stroke warnings for our dogs but not so many for our cats, but that doesn't stop us worrying about them!

So what are the risks of heat stroke in our feline friends and what can we do to help them?

🥵🐱 The first thing to know is that heat stroke is rare in cats. They tend to be very sensible in the hot temperatures and although many love to sunbathe, they don’t exert or exhaust themselves like dogs. I have been a vet for a long time and I have never seen a cat with heat stroke.

🥵🐱 Although it is sensible to keep them out of super hot areas of our houses, particularly conservatories, there is no real need, I feel, to prevent them from going outside. And for many shutting them in is likely to stress them out. If they start feeling too warm, most cats will move to a cooler area. Ensuring they have the ability and choice to do that is the key.

🥵🐱 Encouraging them to drink more is a good idea. My top tip is to freeze the spring water from tuna tins into ice cubes and put a couple in their water bowl. This not only cools the water, especially if you change it regularly, it also flavours it & makes them more likely to drink it.

🥵🐱 Some cats will be grateful for a cool mat, especially longer haired ones. But don’t be offended if they don’t use it, you know what cats are like! Other good cooling options are fans and frozen bottles of water wrapped in towels.

🥵🐱 Talking of thick and long coated cats, if this hot weather continues, they will be much more comfortable clipped off. There is no truth to the myth that a thick coat has natural cooling properties!

🥵🐱Using a pet safe sunscreen on white ears (and noses if they will allow it!), even if your cat isn’t a particular sun-worshiper, is a very good idea. Unfortunately, skin cancers triggered by sun damage aren’t uncommon.

Essentially, for our cats in the hot weather, it is not really about preventing heat stroke but more about just ensuring they have the ability to stay comfortable and get cooler if they need to.

The reassurance and joy they give us even in their hour of need is unbelievable. I will never fail to be amazed by it.

This is little Fury, who you will see in the first installment of brand new episodes of The Supervet on Channel 4 or All 4 next week. I know you will fall in love like we all did x

Please DO NOT walk your dog in the heat of the day. They are in danger of burning their paws on hot pavements and, more seriously, of heatstroke.

Symptoms of heatstroke are, -

Heavy panting, even when not exercising
Breathing problems, particularly in flat-faced dogs
Tiredness
Stiffness or an unwillingness to move
Dribbling
Confusion
Being sick, can be bloody
Upset stomach, can be bloody
Not walking in a straight line
Collapse
Fitting

Your dog may suffer any or all of the symptoms above.

If you think your dog may have heatstroke it is vital that you immediately contact your vet while cooling them down. Getting early advice and treatment is essential to saving a dog’s life. Research has found that in the UK, although 1 in 7 dogs that are taken to vets with heatstroke die, 98% that are seen early with mild signs are likely to survive.

Stop them exercising, move them out of the heat and into the shade
Call a vet for advice
Lay them down on a cool floor
Offer them small amounts of water to drink
Carefully pour water over the dog’s body, or sponge them if water is limited. Particularly focus on their neck, tummy and inner thighs. Ideally continue to do this until their breathing returns to normal. Make sure the dog doesn’t inhale any water while you’re trying to cool them down.
Fan them with cool air or put them in an air-conditioned room or car if possible. The impact of fanning them, or putting them somewhere that’s air-conditioned, will be greatest if they’re already wet.
It was previously thought that rapidly cooling an affected dog could cause them to go into shock. This advice is now being questioned, so always speak to your vet who can guide you through how best to help your dog. This is the advice of the Kennel Club.

Also please think about our struggling wildlife and place dishes of water at high (for birds) and low (small mammals) levels.
