Lead The Way Canine Care We provide family friendly dog training along with dog walking services in Aberdeen City. Who are we? Lead The Way Canine Care was established in 2016.
(22)

We offer a wide variety of classes and workshops, and we also do personalised 1-2-1 sessions. We can provide these services both on, and off line. In addition to our training services we also provide professional dog walking services to certain areas of Aberdeen. What do we do? We specialise in helping families to raise well behaved pet dogs. Each of our trainers has a slightly different style, bu

t none of them consider using pain or fear to train a dog an ethical choice. Instead we use motivational techniques which include using markers, toys and food to train your dog. When can we train? With the online course you can train at any time. If you want to book a class, workshop or 1-2-1 session, please contact us via our page. The team is available to contact Monday-Friday 10am-5pm UK time. Our Trainers:

Louise Burnett is Head Trainer and Founder of Lead The Way Canine Care. Louise is a Full Member of the Institute for Modern Dog Trainers (IMDT) and is also a member of the Pet Professional Guild UK (PGBI). Since her first family dog, a mongrel called Kerry, she has always enjoyed teaching dogs and learning about them. She spent many of her teenage years in Ireland working in animal rescue and helping with the rehabilitation and rehoming of severely traumatised dogs. After moving to Scotland in 2010 she now has 5 dogs of her own Riley, Rolo, Fidget, Took and Link. She is an established Kennel Club Assured Breeder and has been working with dogs professionally for over 4 years. She specialises in the raising and settling of puppies, and rescued or rehomed dogs, into family homes.

It's going to be warmer next week than it has been Though the forecast says max 18c, I imagine it will definitely feel a lot hotter, especially between 12pm-6pm.

Walks will proceed as usual, I will be keeping to shaded areas and if there's no access to running water I will be bringing water with me for the dogs. If I feel its in their best interests, walks will be shortened to protect the dogs.

I would suggest keeping your dog's comfortable indoors by:
🐾 closing any blinds/curtains etc where the sun will shining in a window.
🐾 if you don't have air condioning, open windows for air circulation (or keep a fan on if you believe its safe to do so around your dog)
🐾 refresh the water in your dog's bowl at least 3-4 times a day
🐾 leave out a cool mat for your dog (again, if safe to do so, some dogs like to chew them!)

For going outside:
🐾 avoid walking along pavements and roads as much as possible, grass is best for your dog's feet
🐾 reduce the time of your walks if you don't have access to a lot of shade or water
🐾 even if you have access to water, don't forget that water toxity is very real and dangerous. Short bursts of swimming for your dog to cool them off
🐾 make yourself aware of the signs of heat exhaustion in a dog and be aware that dog's that are overweight, old, young, brachycephalic or dog's with a thick heavy coat that is difficult to brush out are far more likely to succumb to heat exhaustion

It's likely to be an absolutely gorgeous week, let's all enjoy it 🥰

Individual Training Sessions - Now taking bookings for May

I am pretty much fully booked for April (bar the 30th) and this is what my calendar for May looks like.

If you are wanting to book in private training for you and your dog then please don't wait to get in touch as there are limited spaces.

I really don't like to keep anyone waiting and I do provide support over the phone or via email for those who book training but who I'm not able to see right away. So even if you're struggling now and I can't physically meet you till the 7th of May, I can still help you !

Our Walk and Train groups are special. They help with tackling everyday encounters.

-Teaching dogs that being around other dogs doesn't always mean playing with or getting to greet those dogs
-Building confidence in owners with how to handle situations
-Teaching canine body language to owners so they can understand a dogs intentions
-Improving a dog's confidence in interactions with other dogs, people and the environment
-Plus practicing well known behaviours in public

We do require you to complete an assessment with us before joining on a Walk and Train. If your dog requires additional training prior to joining a Walk and Train, we can help with that 🥰🐾

I hear or read people talking about "basic recall" and I roll my eyes.

Teaching a good Recall is ANYTHING but basic. There's so much that goes into it, professional dog trainers, even those who win obediance competitions all over the world, will tell you about their struggles teaching recall. This is because every dog is different. Motivators are different. Environment plays a massive part. Learning history and single event learning are often your best friend or your worst enemy.

Stop saying things like recall is a "basic" skill. It's not. It's a lifelong learning process for both dog and human. The difference between Joe Bloggs in the park and an experienced dog trainer is we know WHERE AND WHEN to let our dogs off, to ensure the best possible chances of always getting that really good recall. If we have any doubt that our dogs may not come back to us, they tend not to get off lead in that area/moment until we are willing to bet money they will come back. Even then, this can backfire! If you give the dog a choice, then you can't guarantee 100% results.

Recall isn't basic, it's hard work, and requires constant upkeep. Constant.

We're looking for Props and Volunteers for our Socialisation Classes.

If you have any of the following props lying around, in good condition but not needed, we will gladly come collect it and use it in our Classes.

👶 Pushchair (must fold up)
🏀 Basketball/Football
🐻 Teddy Bears
⛑Helmets (motorcycle helmet, bike helmet, etc)
🛴Scooter (must fold up)
🛹Skateboard
🦽Wheelchair (must fold up)

We are always happy to have Volunteers come along and help too. If you fit any of the following criteria, we'd love to have you along to play with puppies 🥰

🚹 Male.
Literally, anyone male...😶
Now, don't laugh! You'd be surprised how many dogs grow up to be wary of men. It's the testosterone, we can't replicate this, so we need some more dog friendly dudes!
🎸 If you can play instruments that you can bring with you (think busker in the street, but no tips, just puppy cuddles)
👨‍👧‍👦 Dog-savvy kids (over 5 please!) with a guardian to accompany them.
They don't have to be calm and composed all the time, but so long as they aren't scared of dogs, we can work with that!

Please let us know if you can help and we will come meet you!

He has been attending our Socialisation Class on Fridays and his owner was beaming last week as she was telling us how he has blossomed into such a confident and brave puppy 🐶 ❤

We just have to make sure Lesley doesn't try to take him home with her at the end of every class! 😘🤣

We have taken delivery of these beauties! 🤩

We will only sell things that we would use ourselves and we LOVE Lickimat products in this house. 🥰

We have a variety of different Lickimats for sale in sizes, pattern and toughness 💪

We also have the SloDog, bone shaped bowls in a variety of colours. These are fabulous for dry, wet or raw food. They slow down the eating process without frustrating the dog and once they've finished eating they will also enjoy licking the little grooves in the bowl clean. 👅

If you'd like me to set anything aside for you, please send me a message!

⚠️Please note, you can only buy our products at class, during one to one training or as one of our walking clients. We don't have a shop you can visit (yet!👀).

Simba out enjoying himself and demonstrating the recall and engagement we've been working on for a few weeks. Recalling away from playing with other dogs x2 and offering check-in and engagement when play is going on.

He's still not 100% comfortable having me hold his collar, so we leave a lead on for safety 👍

When I first started walking Simba, he had no interest in me. At all. I can say the same about a lot of the dogs I've got on my books. I usually end up taking on those that are a little bit more challenging 😅

He had been passed up by other walkers because he is scared of strangers in the house. We're still not at the stage where he is comfortable with me in the family home, but from the results I'm getting out on the walks I'm sure it won't be long before he is happy to see me all the time 🥰

Progress, not perfection ❤

Found ourselves a new friend. Unfortunately found her running along Summerhill Road.

I managed to pull over and catch her, as she was trying to get into someone's chickens! 😬 Sweet little thing, but no tags on collar. (Friendly reminder to put a small tag with your number on your dog's collar.)

Call me on 07447 927884 with proof of ownership and I'll bring her home to you 👍

Please share where you can.

🐾Canine Socialisation Class🐾

I've had a few questions about this class and wanted to share some little snippets from our first class last night.

Our Canine Socialisation classes are not formal training sessions. They are designed to help boost confidence for dogs and puppies. They will benefit people who struggle with their fearful or anxious dogs and people who have puppies under 16weeks of age and are waiting for formal training classes.

We have two instructors during this class and we will talk you through:
✅Introducing your pup to new environments, novel items and textiles
✅How to build confidence around other people and dogs
✅How to teach your dog confidence in being handled (by you and by strangers)
✅How to desensitise your dog to noises
✅How to read your dog's body language so you aren't rushing them into situations they aren't yet comfortable with
✅Controlled scenarios like adults in hi-vis gear and kids on scooters
✅Introductions to gentle and social adult dogs who are good role models

We have volunteers who will come by weekly. These volunteers will be both kids and adults and they will be trained in how to help with your dog's Socialisation experience. If you would like to join our list of volunteers, please send us a text or email.

Our Canine Socialisation Class is on Friday at 5pm in the Bridge of Don. If you'd like to sign up for our Socialisation Class, please send us an email:
