Ever since watching James Herriot on the tv and reading all his books, I have wanted to be a vet. After graduating as a veterinary surgeon and working as a vet for a few years I started a family with my husband and found I couldn’t really combine being a vet with family life.
I started teaching Animal Management at the local college and achieved my teaching degree after 2 years. This was a great combination, I still had a job where I could take my dog to work (Seamus, on the picture, still loves coming to every lesson and the students love him) but when the children were off school, I was home as well. After teaching for about 7 years, it was time for a change. I was looking for a job where I could combine my love for dogs with my organisational skills and when I saw that PetStay Norfolk was available, I jumped at the chance to take it on and I haven’t looked back!

Why home boarding?
Having fostered dogs for a few years, I know how dogs change when they are in kennels and how they improve when they come out of kennels into a loving family home. Having always had rescue dogs, I have never put any of them in kennels when I went on holiday, but at times it was hard to find alternatives. We usually book Seamus’ holiday before we book our own! Home boarding is the perfect solution to make sure that both dog(s) and owner are happy and at PetStay Norfolk we make sure that all our carers are perfectly suited to the dog’s needs."

However, I felt like this was not a career I wanted to do forever! I have worked in Care homes since leaving school. Fast-forward to last year, I made the big decision to pursue a career that I felt ever so passionate about. I took the time to find work experience placements. I was so chuffed that I managed to get a placement in a veterinary practice and in an animal rescue. I fell in love with the care of animals and decided to go ahead and do a Veterinary Science course. I did all this whilst working full-time… 60 hours a week some weeks. After lots and lots of research, I decided that I was going to hand my notice in at my current job and develop a dog walking & pet sitting business. I have now completed a Diploma in Dog walking & Pet Sitting, as well as a Pet First-Aid course. I am also fully insured! I feel incredibly lucky to be able to follow my dream career path as well as get all the experience throughout my placements. I am dedicated to providing an outstanding service for each one of you😊. "Hiya, I'm Sammy! I'm the founder and owner of Doxie Canine Services. I have been a Pet Professional since 2019 and I'm an experienced pet owner. I have experience with all kinds of animals, reactivity levels, catering for different pets needs, biddible dogs and the stubborn. I have a huge interest in dog psychology, behaviour, nutrition and genetics.
I grew up around animals since day one, it's somewhat a running joke how I was raised by animals. Most my childhood photos are of myself either camping under the table with a dog, holding some animal or me dressed in fancy dress as a dalmatian.
In 2006 after a lot of begging, crying and tantrums, I got my first dog, George. My Nan got him for me as a tiny pup because of course - I am her favourite and I was always getting into trouble with her Jack Russell's. I will never forget that day.
George sadly passed away January 2022 at the amazing age of 16. He had health issues including a rare illness rarely seen in dogs called Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, AKA Westie Lung Disease. I was always praised by vets for how well I took care of him, my knowledge and how great his quality of life was despite on paper his diagnosis was terminal. It was an absolute privilege to share 16 years with him and I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat.
I share my home with my mini dachshund, Ella as well as reptiles, a bunny and a cat. Over the years I have had many pets of different species."
