Admin day incoming!

I’ll be honest, I love dog training but despise admin and general business management. I’m just not good at balancing the two especially when it’s been a busy week like this week.

So just a little apology to you all and a promise that I will be catching up with messages tomorrow afternoon.

📸 In the meantime enjoy Tide’s slightly crazed but enthusiastic face whilst doing some heelwork 🐾

January puppy life skills course is now FULL! ❌

We have some space left on our foundation course which is for dogs 6 months plus. This could be for puppies looking to continue their training, those cheeky adolescent dogs or perhaps an adult dog that needs a refresher.

Spaces filling fast 🐾

Life skills classes for January!

We’ve only got one puppy space remaining for our first puppy course of 2025.

I’m expecting the foundation course to fill pretty swiftly too.

So if your New Year’s resolution is to spend more time with your dog (which is a great choice if you ask me) 😉 then the training classes are booking up fast.

A reminder about livestock worrying!

A farmer is well within his right to take drastic action against a dog that is worrying or harming his livestock.

There are sheep currently grazing in a section of the dunes at Ynyslas. They are fenced in with clear signage so if near that area please pop your dog on a lead.

Although I would assume that I am preaching to the choir here on this page I hope!

Sheep killed by dog
There has been a dog attack on the sheep in the fenced area of the dunes at Ynyslas and one of the sheep has been killed. Please act responsibly and keep your dog on a lead whilst walking through this area. Access points to the grazed area are clearly marked indicating the presence of sheep.
The winter grazing helps to maintain the special flower rich dunes.

There are loads of positives for why you should be training your dog.

For me the main reason is the freedom it gives them! It isn’t about suppressing the dog but allowing them to have more opportunities.

If I know my dogs are engaged with me, have good recall and respond to simple cues around distractions then we can enjoy stress free adventures together. ❤️

Last nights puppy life skills!

These little ones are a bundle of fun and progressing really nicely with their training. Last night we introduced a fun trick “paws up” to help with confidence and body awareness and to enable us to also teach an “off” cue to the puppies.

Well it’s been a pretty busy day!

Several walks, a 121 session, a vet visit for one of my own dogs, 2 group classes and rounding of the night with a drop in for the delightful Raven and Nova.

It’s now 10pm and time for me to head home to my own rabble of dogs 🐾

A great morning with little Wilfred and his reactivity training.

Saw around a dozen dogs and a real variety too. Some off lead, various sizes and even a head on encounter as we turned a corner (which Wilfred and his humans handled perfectly, so much so Wilfred didn’t even bark when the other dog reacted to him!).

Throughout the hour he had one small reaction when another terrier wanted to come over to play. Wilfred was on lead whilst we were training but they still came towards us so we gave distance and Wilfred recovered quickly and went straight back into training mode. He then passed several more dogs with zero issue.

In real life little set backs happen but it’s how the handler and dogs deal with them that really matter. A small bark then back to business for this little guy.

Wilfred was an absolute star 🌟

Have you got a puppy that is constantly chewing everything?

Let’s talk about that…

First of all, puppies chewing is a completely natural behaviour. Puppies explore the world using a variety of senses and much like human babies will put most things in their mouths. This will also increase more when they start to loose their baby teeth and their adult teeth come in.

I see a lot of posts on various dog forums about “how can I stop my puppy chewing?!”

The truth is we shouldn’t stop this chewing behaviour altogether. However, instead we need to provide suitable outlets for this.

The first thing I look at is what textures and items my puppy is choosing to chew on. If it’s hard material like wooden table legs then providing my puppy with soft cuddle toys to play with isn’t going to help. This is actually where a lot of people go wrong and why they struggle to redirect their puppy onto toys.

Try and find a suitable safe similar alternative for your puppy to use.

❌Chewing wooden table legs
✅Dog safe wood chews that they can really get their teeth into
❌Chewing blankets/clothes
✅Cuddly dog toys that are soft in texture
❌Chewing shoes
✅Rubber toys that are a similar feel as the sole of a shoe

Also another option is to offer a controlled outlet for grabbing and biting things. With my puppies I love a small game of tug during the day. It allows them to use their teeth and pull and also is a great way for them to build a bond with me too!

What outlets for chewing has worked best for your dogs and puppies? 🐾

Classes are on tonight!

However, if you have an anxious dog or a dog that is noise sensitive then it doesn’t hurt to skip a class if there is a chance they might be startled by fireworks. Although we are situated a bit outside of town we may still have fireworks audible near the training barn.

If you feel this might be an issue for your dog then relax at home and practice your training homework instead. ☺️
