Some awesome tips in this post ⬇️

I use these when socialising our puppies and (older dogs) in many scenarios and they are highly beneficial. I couldn't be happier with how they gain their confidence. More people need to be aware ❤️

WHY I DON'T ENCOURAGE ANXIOUS/FEARFUL DOGS/PUPPIES WITH TREATS, TOYS, MY VOICE, PRAISE ETC .

When a dog / puppy is scared of something, I do not actively encourage them forward, whether that be with food or praise or my movement. This can intensify feelings of anxiety by creating motivational conflict and decrease the value in what you are using to encourage.

What I do is find the point in which the dog / puppy can observe the scary thing calmly and to support them in moving forward when they are ready to investigate under their own agency.

Allowing escape is crucial. If something has scared a dog/puppy to the point where they are in flight mode, then I move with them until they feel safe enough to slow down. If they are unable to do this around the trigger stimulus, then I do not force them to be around that stimulus.

Examples;

🐕 DOGS

If a puppy/dog is scared of another dog/puppy, I do not actively encourage their approach- even if the other dog/puppy is behaving perfectly. I give the dog/puppy time to assess the situation.
If the puppy/dog looks more relaxed and curious at the distance they are at I will invite them to move forward by taking one small step. If they aren't ready then I rejoin their side to support them.
If they indicate they want to move away (by looking and moving away) I support that by taking a step in that direction.

If the other dog is approaching your puppy/dog in the situation - so they cannot stand and observe from a place of safety - I would calmly block and gently encourage the other dog away if they were too close.

If a dog/puppy is scared of a dog, I don't go and interact with that dog to show them that the dog is friendly. I stay with the scared dog/puppy and support them and I remain their place of safety.

🧍‍♂️ PEOPLE

If a dog is scared of me, I do not try to make them my friend by offering them food, nor by crouching down and talking to them. I never use food to make a dog my friend, nor do I generically recommend my clients get people to offer their nervous (of people) dog treats.

I stand at a distance so they can be reassured I am not a threat, without putting them under pressure to interact. If they sniff me, I remain quiet and stand still so as to allow information gathering without startling them. As the dog becomes more relaxed around me, I start to gradually add in more behaviour from me (movement, brief glances at the dog, brief talking etc).

📦 OBJECTS

If a dog is scared of an object I don't go and put food on the object nor do I leave the dog where they are to interact with the object and show that the object is safe. I stay with the dog and support them and I trust that over time, due to the object being quite predictable, that the dog/puppy will start to get use to it (unless it is a really scary object).

📈 FREQUENCY OF EXPOSURE

Seeing as time, distance and choice (to approach/avoid) are the key things a dog needs to build resilience and confidence- we should be mindful of how often our dog is encountering trigger stimuli on their walks. Too frequent exposure will likely reduce tolerance and lead to handler responses becoming inconsistent due to variables within the situation or time allocated to the dog's walk.

📝 BEING THOROUGH

With all of the above, these responses in the moment will be supported by a multi-pronged approach to increasing a dog/puppy's confidence. This will include a vet check to ensure pain or health problems aren't motivating the anxious or fearful behaviour.

WHEN MIGHT I WAVER THE ABOVE....

In some situations, when I can see the motivation to approach an object is there but that they are too nervous to close the final distance and be the first to get closer- THEN I may utilise social learning by being the first one of the social group to investigate (be the guinea pig).

When a dog/puppy is appearing more confident around dogs but is struggling to interact, relying on random encounters makes the interaction quality less predictable. I would then do a session with helper dogs who are quite happy to largely ignore the fearful dog/puppy and who will overall behave in a predictable way (not rushing around etc).

In some nuanced situations, I may use food to motivate movement and exploration, however, it is NEVER exclusively placed on or around the scary thing and I do what I can to help the dog feel as minimally conflicted as possible- so as not to poison the food.

In some very nuanced and incredibly rare situations, there may be little option available other than to consider extinction and flooding.

For example, a dog is scared by gunshot/crow scarer sounds beyond the halfway point of a walk and the direction they wish to flee is too far/likely to stress them more than the direction you are trying to encourage.

There are always exceptions to "the norm", but the norm for me is to not coerce dogs with food or my voice to push them out of their comfort zone.

9 week update 🥰

Disco and Dakota are staying with us a little longer.
Delta and Dana are settling in well in their new homes and I am super proud of well they have adjusted.

Socialisation continues with trips to the school run in the puppy sling, door manners, rewarding desirable behaviours in the home and Dakota uses her body language to let me know she wants to go in the garden 🥳

I am planning new activities to do with them so I can fit as much in before they leave.

Puppy owners were unaware- 3 now have names starting with S ❤️

We have 1.5 weeks left before we welcome their aunties and uncles into the world 🥰

61 days ago we welcomed 4 little girls into the world. Alaska's labour was calm and easygoing and she has been an incredible mum since.

Together we raised 4 wonderful girls who have made me feel like I have won something special. They have been superstars as they take everything in, are indifferent to changes (big and small), have fantastic off-switches and I keep wondering how I have been so lucky. I called them Alaska's miracles when we found out she really was pregnant and they truly feel like miracle puppies.

They had had their second vaccinations this morning and the compliments I received really made me feel like I have done the very best by them. They were calm and chilled out in the stroller, not phased by their environment, or new people coming to greet them and give them a little health check followed by a needle. It was amazing to hear how one of the nurses followed me on here and told everyone I was a good breeder. (Thank you so much)

I am excited for the girls and their futures. With owners continuing to build upon my socialisation and with our girl's naturally awesome temperaments, they are going to have the best life.
I am going to miss them more than I can say because they are Raven and Drake's granddaughters, it wasn't easy getting Alaska pregnant and the last 8 weeks have been the best (they have gone by way too quickly!). These little girls may have a small idea but they will never know just how special they are to me ❤

I have been looking forward to this day for a while. We visited Filey Bird Garden & Animal Park with Willow and the puppies 😊

The puppies were in their stroller and were taken out and carried around for them to see the animals, smell the new scents, see new people and dogs and take in a new environment.

They did extremely well and I am super happy to have found a new and special socialisation activity. They did not make a sound- they were content looking around and went to sleep when tired. Dana and Dakota fell asleep by the time I got round to taking photos with my camera so I will add their many photos to the page's story.

This was their first long car trip and I am so proud of how they accepted the long drive. They were that good, we decided to have a little stroll along the beach to get some extra socialisation in.

These girls never fail to impress me. They accept everything we do and are incredible. We hit the jackpot in genetics, providing me with a brilliant foundation to build on with socialisation.

The girls are 8 weeks old and loving life 🥰

Our weekend is planned with some fantastic activities for the girl's socialisation. We are getting their second vaccinations done on Monday and they will start their journeys with their new hoomans after.

These girls will be greatly missed but letting them go gives us time to get prepared for Raven's arrivals later this month ❤

With Alaska’s daughters officially having their future 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 lined up, I am excited to announce Raven and Drake are expecting a litter at the end of March 🥳

It is super exciting as they are the grandparents to our current girls and this pairing gifted me with Alaska. I can say from my own experience that Raven and Drake make awesome babies 🥰

Alaska and Hendrix's girls are 7 weeks old!

We have been so busy having fun, that I thought today was Tuesday so I had to capture the girls playing in the garden this evening.

These girls will sail through life with how well they tolerate new experiences and environments. They take everything in and accept new things. The cafe visit was a big success and after a little play in the stroller, they were content to sleep. I have a lot more activities planned for these girls and they will be ready for the big, outside world when they can safely walk outside ❤

The puppies have had their first vaccinations and have a clean bill of health 🥰
The girls could not have been any better- content in the stroller in all areas of the building, happily fell asleep, all relaxed when getting their checks and I was so impressed!

I can't take all the credit despite their socialisation as these girls are naturally easygoing. They have awesome genetics via their parents and grandparents and they are clearly playing a massive role in their temperaments.

Disco clearly stole the show. She was super calm and relaxed and laid down on the vets table. Meeting new people, being up high in a new environment, having health checks... not a problem for these girls 🥳

6 week update 🐾

The girls continue to thrive and are a pleasure to socialise. They take everything in their stride and will continue having new experiences and outdoor adventures in the stroller.

Dana is our last puppy to find her hoomans. She has a fun, loving temperament and will suit a variety of family lifestyles. She is so much like her daddy Hendrix in personality and will bring so much love to someone❤

We have a had a busy weekend of meeting new families and going out for socialisation.

Delta and Dakota have met their hoomans.
Disco may meet hers very soon.
Dana is wondering when she will meet hers 🥰

In a weeks time the girls will have had their first vaccination and microchip.
We will be going to Pets at home in advance so they will be familiar with the scents at the store and at Vets4pets before they go for their first appointment ❤️

Our little pupskies are 5 weeks old 🐾

They are fabulous girls and their temperaments will suit a variety of homes and lifestyles.
We have made great progress with creating positive associations with the car and they may be ready for a little adventure out in the stroller this weekend.
They have had small play sessions in the garden and have started toileting out there too.
We have a viewing this weekend and we will still have some searching for their special someone to spend a life full of adventure together 🥰

I hope to see Dana in a busy family home. She LOVES all humans, is affectionate, confident, independent, and has lovely energy. I always catch her climbing on things.

Delta is our only bi eyed girl and has the shortest coat in this litter. She is confident, independent and affectionate. She's clever and will take herself back to her crate when she is tired.

Disco is a stunning girl and clearly loves humans. I can see her forming a strong bond with her future family. I love walking into the room and seeing her coming towards me with the waggiest tail.

Dakota is special to me. I cannot say how much I want to keep this girl. She has it all and I feel a connection to her- just like what I felt for Alaska as a puppy. I do not think I can keep her and it will break mine and my son's heart to let her go. She is cool, confident and takes everything in her stride.
