19/11/2022

When Tommy’s owner noticed him losing weight, even though he had an increased appetite, he reached out to our Edinburgh Pet Hospital for help. 😿 Tommy was booked in for blood tests and a full examination by our veterinary team, to understand what the cause may be.

His examination showed that Tommy was underweight, had a fast heart rate, and the vet could feel a swelling of the thyroid gland, all of which are characteristic signs of hyperthyroidism. 😟 Blood tests confirmed this and Tommy was immediately started on medication to stabilise the condition. ❤️

After just a few short weeks there was a huge improvement with Tommy, as he was not as ravenously hungry and he also began putting some weight back on! 🤗

That being said, Tommy certainly wasn’t the easiest kitty cat to sneak medication to, 🙈 and due to the difficulty his owner was having with medicating him, our vet discussed a surgical option for him to think about. 🤔 A few weeks later, Tommy was admitted for a thyroidectomy procedure to remove his right thyroid gland surgically. 🏥

The surgery went well, and we’re pleased to say that Tommy went home later that day with pain relief and instructions to rest! 💤 Tommy is now happier and more energetic than he’s been in years, and he hasn’t had to visit one of our Pet Hospitals since! 🥰

The is not progressing through parliament - today marks exactly one year since it was last debated, and it risks being dropped from the government's agenda. The Bill contains important measures to stop unethical puppy smuggling, including:

🐾 Raising the age limit of imported puppies
🐾 Limiting the number of dogs who can be transported per vehicle
🐾 Restricting the import of pregnant dogs
🐾 Restricting the import of dogs with cropped ears

Alongside other animal welfare groups, we're asking the government to find the time to make this bill law.
