Your puppy's first weeks as part of your family.

The first few weeks in a puppies life after leaving their mother & siblings is probably the scariest & worrying time of their lives as everything is new.

It is also when your puppy is best able to absorb & learn many of the skills which will become the cornerstones of their adult life . What they learn & encounter in the first 16 or so weeks of their life is so important as that is their key learning phase.

So it is important that your puppy is able to encounter & learn as much as possible during this time. As most puppies do not have their second vaccination until approximately 4 weeks after arrival & they are not encouraged to leave the home on foot until then, they may miss out on a large part of this important stage of their development, learning & confidence building.

Therefore it is suggested that you start building your puppies confidence with their new family, in their new home , with regular visitors & where possible in safe out of the home locations as soon as they are settled with you.

This may include:
🔹 Establishing toileting, eating. sleeping, resting & playing routines
🔹 Identifying boundaries if or where required
🔹Gently introducing them to household noises & appliances
🔹 Meeting new people in a calm manner
🔹 Taking them to different locations & environments where they can be carried or transported for short periods of acclimatisation

Starting this process once they are settled with your family will give your puppy some of the confidence & skills they need for the big wide world & will make it far less daunting for them when the time comes to encounter it.

If you have a new puppy or are introducing one to your family soon you may be interested in a Pre Vaccination Puppy Programme which can start as soon as your puppy is settled.

07/07/2022

Pulling on the lead is one of the top behaviours I get for help with.

If your dog pulls on the lead here are 5 reasons why this may be & and some tips to start improving the situation.

1. Your lead is too short
The shorter the lead the quicker it goes taut & pulling begins, a longer lead will take longer to tighten & the effect of pulling to commence. Using a longer lead & you adjust the length when safety requires & let them have more when safe to do so.

2. The destination is more exciting than the journey
If lead walks often end in your dog having fun in the park etc it is not surprising your dog wants to get there quickly. While you get them used to walking on the lead without pulling practice without the exciting destination & maybe drive them to the park if possible.

3. You are pulling on the lead
It is a natural reaction if someone or something pulls you, you will pull away from it. So if your dog pulls on their lead & you pull back, they will automatically pull away again. Therefore if your dog pulls try not to pull back so you don't get into the cycle of two way pulling.

4. Your dog has rehearsed & been rewarded for pulling in the past
This has made it a normal & accepted behaviour for them because you have inadvertently rewarded them for this. To understand this, you may need to consider your behaviour when your dog pulls & consider whether it is rewarding for them.

5. Your dog is anxious about someone, something or a wider environmental trigger & need to pass it or get home as quickly as possible
This is an emotional reaction to a trigger so therefore are unlikely to be able to respond to you in a rational way. Until you are aware of what these are & how to respond to them it would be suggested that you avoid these locations or situations if it occurs regularly on walks.

Puppies

What do puppies need during their first few weeks with their new family?

I know families are so excited about bringing their new puppy home and of course they should be, but they may not have considered how their puppy is feeling.

One day they are literally picked up by people they may have only met a couple of times & taken often on a long car journey away from their mother & siblings.

The next thing they know they are in a new home, with new things, no canine family & their new family who want nothing more than to make them feel loved.

Unfortunately the puppy doesn't understand this & may be feeling some or all of theses emotions:
🔸Scared
🔸Upset
🔸 Sad
🔸 Lonely
🔸Overwhelmed
🔸 Worried
And many more things may be going through their little heads.

Imagine how you would feel if a similar thing happened to you when your were about 2 or 3 years old & you were taken away from your family & the only security you had know & were expected to fit in with a new family, home & life, without chance to acclimatise at your own pace. You would probably feel all of the above emotions & more.

If you are getting a new puppy soon and would like support & advice on what YOU need & how you can ensure you are ready to welcome them & you understand and are prepared to give them what THEY need when they join your family.

The NEW "Be Puppy Prepared "online (Zoom) session may be what you & your puppy needs to ensure you life together gets off yo a start you both deserve,

Grass Seeds

You may have noticed the roadside verges or fields are full of tall grasses with lots of seeds.

The photo is of the actual seed that was removed from Morris my Spaniels ear today.

Grass seeds can cause dogs distress and in some cases infection if they get into their body.

This can happen by getting into the ear canal as in Morris' case today, inhaled up the nostril (this happend to my old terrier) or imbedded into and under the skin.

To ensure this doesn't happen to your dog if they have long fur or is prone to things sticking to it. Make sure you brush off all grass seeds you can see and check inside their ears (if it hasn't gone too far in) and between their toes and around the eyes and eye lids for any rogue seeds.

If like me who couldn't see the seed when I checked after his walk yesterday. Look out for sudden on set head shaking or tilt, sneezing or obsessive chewing feet or other areas and call your vet. As seeds if they get imbedded can cause internal infections.

I hope this helps as quick action only cost me a small vet bill. Infection or a deeply imbedded seed may need surgery and or medication which is more dangerous and expensive

This is a great analogy from Eye 2 Eye Dogs explaining the difference in dogs that have been bred from "working" lines compared to ones bred from "pet or show" lines

Working line- what does it actually mean? Obviously with some show lines we forfeit functionality in the place of looks and appearance, but regardless of this, it’s best to go in fully informed when buying a pup.
The most common working line dog we see with issues due to under stimulation is the working cocker spaniel.

01/07/2022

When you think about "dog or puppy training" what do you think of?

Is it:
🐾 Obedience - asking your dog to do something & them doing it immediately.
🐾 Good Manners - your dog not jumping up at people or running up to other dogs or barking at the door etc.
🐾 New Skills - for your future activities together such as sports.
🐾 How to behave in all situations.
🐾 How to be "social" with all things, dogs & people.

Yes!!!
These may be some of the things you would like you dog to do eventually

Mostly though, the things which are important to a dog/human relationship come through mutual learning & the things that are often classed as "training" can come later once the relationship has been forged.

Why do I say this?

We are two living beings of different species, but we share many basic needs, feelings, emotions & biological make up. But we don't have common language & have many differences.

So what gives us the right to decide it is up to us to make the rules, before our dog has got to know us, trust us or in some cases even settled in their new home.

How would you feel if a stranger even speaking the same language walked into your home & started ordering you to do random things like sit or wait, even if they were doing it in a friendly way & maybe give us a piece of chocolate every so often?

You would probably think wtf are they doing & who gave them permission.

If you got to know this person & built a relationship (of whatever type) with them & they started asking you to do things you would probably accept this within reason depending on the strength of your relationship at this point.

So our dogs & puppies deserve a commitment from us to build a relationship first before asking too much of them. Once you have a relationship the rest of things you may want will become easier as they will trust you & do them for you as their friend or protector.

If you would like information on how my puppy or dog coaching programmes can support you in building or reinforcing your relationship for future learning together contact [email protected] or request a call back via https://form.jotform.com/GillGallagher/call-back-request

22/06/2022

Did you know It has been scientifically proven through DNA that all of the domesticated dogs in the world today evolved from a now extinct Eurasian wolf who roamed the world thousands of years ago? (estimates range from 16 - 34 thousand years).

There are differing explanations & suggestions how or why they began to coexist with humans, but the obviously did at some point.

Since that time there have been dramatic changes in looks, temperament, ability & behaviour to for these wolves into evolve into the dogs we know & love today.

These adaptations can be caused by:

Natural evolution which happened when the dogs adapted & evolved without external intervention due to:
♦️ Natural breeding selection by the animals themselves (just like we like to do)
♦️ Environmental issues such as climate
♦️ Available food sources
♦️ Migration between different habitats & locations
♦️ Changes to the environment such as colonisation & industrialisation

Human Intervention by "Selective Breeding" (selecting a male & female that may have desirable traits) to produce dogs to:
♦️ Do a specific job
♦️ Look a particular way
♦️ Behave in a certain way
♦️ Win prizes
♦️ Make money

If you would like to know more about genetics, natural evolution & human intervention such as selective breeding & how it may have affected your dog's looks, skills, behaviours & temperament you may like to read my new blog https://www.allsorts-dog-training.com/blog-1

I specialise in supporting families with working breed dogs using dog centred & choice based methods to understand their dog's instincts, motivation & reinforcements for learning.

20/06/2022

Why does your dog sniff when out on walks?

There are many reasons dogs sniff such as:
🐾 A quick sniff because it smells interesting or different
🐾 Finding out who or what has passed that way before them so they can decide if they wish to go that way too.
🐾 Deciding whether to mark over a particular scent often called scent marking so future dogs can decide as above
🐾 Looking for a mate (female dogs do this too )
🐾 Searching for prey
🐾 Trying to make themselves "invisible" to someone or something they do not want to encounter
🐾 They are anxious because they have sensed something that makes them uneasy

And for each of the above your dog may sniff in a different way which could be:
♦️ A quick sniff
♦️ Deep snuffling of an area
♦️ Standing in one place or moving around while sniffing
♦️ Air sniffing
♦️ A sniff and scratching the ground
♦️ A sniff followed by urination
♦️ Prolonged sniffing in once place

If you would like to understand why your dog is sniffing, what to do when they are and how to make sniffing fun, my Walk Talk & Train session or package will help you and your dog enjoy walking together.

Walk, Talk & Train sessions and packages are personally designed to help and support you when you are out walking with your dog.

09/06/2022

Do you ever just watch your dog when they are at home just being themselves when nothing particular is going on?

If you don't why not give it a try for 20 minutes & you may be surprised what you notice.

Watching your dog when they are at home where should feel is a safe & happy environment & they are relaxed can give you lots of baseline information on their current physical health & emotional state. If you do this regularly you may notice physical or medical changes more quickly than waiting for something more obvious.

Once you have this information it can then be used to gauge changes to their physical or emotional state at other times when they are in new environments & they may not feel safe or there are lots triggers & distractions that may ignite natural instincts or primal behaviours.

When watching your dog they can be lying down, sitting, mooching but not being asked to interact with you or anything else but are in what you feel is a "normal" or "relaxed" state.

Watching your dog's ears, tail & eyes will help you understand their current emotional state & feelings towards the environment.
Ears
🔸 Are they: pointing forward (German shepherd), facing in towards the skull (spaniels), held horizonal (greyhounds) pricked or upright (husky) floppy (beagle) or cocked part upright with a fold (terriers) ?
🔸 Are they relaxed. rigid or scanning (turning to listen).
🔸 How do they react to normal background or sudden noises & do they change position such as lifting, lowering, turning or becoming more rigid?
Tail
🔸 Is it hanging down (at what angle). horizontal, pointing up (at what angle) or curled over (how tightly), is it stiff or soft?
🔸 If it wags is it measured or relaxed?
🔸 How does it react to normal background or sudden noises does it rise. lower stiffen or wag more or less?
Eyes
🔸 Are they soft or focussing?
🔸 Do they look at you often, occasionally or never?
🔸 How do they react to normal background or sudden noises? It may be too difficult to notice due to the speed they may react
Watching these at home will give you an idea of what your dog is experiencing at a particular moment time though their senses of smell or sound (which are much more acute than ours) or from movement as their reactions to this is much quicker than ours. If you feel your dog is not relaxed when at home there may be emotional or environmental issues that need addressing before further exposure to other environments.

Being aware of the above when your dog is in a relaxed and happy environment will enable you to gauge how their emotions change when they are in more challenging environments so you can learn to mange these situation for your dog

Watching your dog's body & movement may also identify physical or medical issues
🔸 Is it relaxed, stiff or hunched?
🔸 Are they resting, moving around or pacing?
🔸 If they are moving is there any sign stiffness or lameness?
🔸Are they excessively licking or chewing at a particular place ?
🔸 Is the coat in what you think of as good condition e.g. is it as shiny, wiry or curly as you expect, are there any signs flaky skin or raw patches or has the coat changed in texture?
If you notice anything that appears unusual especially if it has changed or become more pronounced recently it may be a sign of a physical or medical issue that will require a veterinary check.
