Phew this weather!
Check that pavement and stick to the shade if you head out.

Here's some mentally stimulating games to tire them out a but at home or on early morning walks before the suns fully up.
Maybe leave the flirt pole out tho, bit too active for this heat.

Hero playing with Chesters old toys. I never believed I'd see this day, it never felt right until I got the signs to bring Hero into my life. And here he is, louder than life itself, not replacing Chez but benefiting from all that lad taught me 💜🐾

Don't give dog thieves easy access to your dog, instead of tying your pooch up outside the polling station today consider leaving them at home /with a friend also outside.

Feigning sleep to encourage Hero to settle after a big play, works. I do a big yawn, lie back, sigh and close my eyes. He considers it, then heads to his bed... Or so I thought.

Lying there with my eyes closed, trusting he'd settle like each time before and OOOooff! he fox-pounced my chest to bring me back to life 🤣

Shocked and howling with laughter I totally ruined that trick cos now he's realised it worked in his favour. I shall just have to shape it into CPR! Hero to the rescue 🫡😆

Even with clouds the heat can be high, harder to breath, not enough airflow is a killer. Please keep a look out for those who aren't aware

Dogs overheat quicker than people.

Maybe it really is that hot.
Maybe they can't cope for just 5 minutes.
Maybe it's a risk in case you get held up.
Maybe you value your windows 🤔😉

Please be the voice for the voiceless. A little window gap is simply not enough airflow. Make other plans!

Dog harnesses

I get this question all the time from parents:

"My dog growls at my kids. How do I stop this?"

Instead of asking how to stop the growl, ask how to STOP THE REASON the dog is growling in the first place.

For example, If your kids are too close, ask them to back up and invite the dog to them instead.

Parenting kids and dogs at the same time is hard.

Reach out if you are overwhelmed as a parent or as a dog pro without lots of kid experience. You are not alone - I can help.

It took me a minute too, so to those who haven't yet 'got it' but are afraid to ask (you needn't be) the dude is Ivan Pavlov.

He is best known for a behavioural theory called Pavlovian/ Classical Conditioning.

Pavlov paired the sound of a bell ringing with food arriving. The dogs began to drool when they heard the bell, even if no food came.

Salivating is a natural, unconditioned response to food but now they drooled to the bell, a neutral 'indifferent' stimulus, so now the drooling behaviour is a conditioned response, cos it's been trained in.

Dogs, people and every animal learn by way of Classical Conditioning. What other examples can you think of for classical conditioning?

I'll start - ice-cream van 🤤

Lincolnshire Police is sharing government advice to dog owners on the changes to the banned dog laws, which will include XL Bully type dogs from 1st February 2024.

To help current owners adapt to the new laws, these changes have come into force in two stages. Since 31st December 2023, it is now against the law in England and Wales to:

sell an XL Bully dog
abandon an XL Bully dog
give away an XL Bully dog
breed from an XL Bully dog
have an XL Bully dog in public without a lead and muzzle (dogs must also be muzzled if they are travelling in a vehicle)
From 1st February 2024, it will be a criminal offence to own an XL Bully type dog in England and Wales unless your dog has a Certificate of Exemption.

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has published official guidance and we are urging dog owners to visit the government’s webpage and act within the given time frame: Prepare for the ban on XL Bully dogs - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Those who own an XL Bully or a dog with XL Bully characteristics can apply for a Certificate of Exemption online, by email or post. Before applying, you must pay an application fee and have third party public liability insurance for banned breeds of dogs. This can be provided by the Dogs Trust and the policy must be renewed annually. It is currently £25 a year.

If applying for an exemption via post or email, you will have to ensure the application is with DEFRA by 15th January 2024. If applying online, owners have until 12:00 pm on 31st January 2024.

The application form and more information is available here: Apply for a Certificate of Exemption to keep an XL Bully dog - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).

If you need any further information, please refer to the government website: Prepare for the ban on XL Bully dogs - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Let them think about it, they can't all respond on a pin head. Give them a chance, pause your movements, pause all the information, let them chew over what they've got and make a decision from there.

Learning takes time, good decisions take experience, information and confidence, all which improve with time 👍😀

We can’t always be expected to give our dogs what we don’t even give ourselves. Every opportunity that we stop, becomes an opportunity to consume more information, but we rarely take time to process it.

Just like us our dogs need time, to figure things out, think about what’s been asked, understand new things. And they are better at it than us if we just give them the time.
So let their processing time, be yours too.

08/08/2023

We often feel to blame when our dog barks, maybe even embarrassed and responsible. But while some of our dog’s barking can indicate something needs addressing, it is often the most effective ways they can communicate.

Not to mention the fact that we have bred our dogs to bark for hundreds of years. To let us know when they’re down a hole, when they’ve found a missing person, when there’s an intruder or when our livestock are under threat.

For every other animal, vocalisations are just part of who they are, but for some reason dogs are expected to be silent. Which just makes little sense when they are the one animal we’ve always asked to speak up.

Restoring harmony with behaviour science steeped in compassion

Qualified Dog Trainer, Layne Arlina, applies evidence-based techniques for the most successful training outcome; be that for good dog behaviour, rehabilitation or low-stress Vet checks.

Dogs are easily misunderstood and their families are often exhausted from trying. Having lived with challenging dogs herself, Layne suspends judgement to facilitate healthy dog-human relationships while repairing any confidence that may have been lost. The wider aim of Streetwise Dogs is to enable dogs to be resilient in the face of change, to stress less and trust more.
