Excellent session today with Jade Eliza McNeil at Vale View.

Ginge can be super naughty and duck out of the right hand side of fences at the very last minute, especially at skinny fences.

Today she’s worked hard on not opening her right rein AT ALL into a fence, closing that right hand escape route, and maintaining a good 3rd gear canter.

Super session, and a great way to kick start her winter training ❄️ 💪🏼

Out in the sunshine this morning with two of my faves Jade Eliza McNeil and Ginge, who was on fiiiirrreeee! 🔥

What we worked on ⬇️

🟠 Getting Ginge in front of the leg!

🟠 Rhythm - a firm favourite in all my sessions!

🟠 Maintaining canter through the turns

🟠 Not letting Ginge increase in front of the fence

🟠 Sitting up and Jade engaging her core on her exit line in preparation for her next fence

All of the above may seem simple and obvious, but piecing it together can be tricky. Yet once it’s all there, it’s noticeable!

Have I said recently that I love my job? 🤔

We’ve been working on Eloise keeping Viv in a rhythm and trying not to interfere with her too much. Viv can be very reactive and has been known to throw some gymastic shapes, so trying to keep her attention whilst maintaining an essence of teamwork can be tricky for Eloise.

Today Eloise entered her first 115cm and posted a lovely double clear (although I did nearly have heart failure at the final double 🫣), coming second by just 0.4 of a second!

Very pleased for this talented combination and excited to see what the winter showjumping season is going to look like for them 😁

Woohoo, I’m back! 🥳🤩😍

It feels soooo good to be back out doing what I love with my riders who have very patiently waited for me to return to work 🥰

Here’s a short clip of Amy and Kato, working on rhythm in the canter into and between fences this afternoon 😁

I’m happy to say I’m back doing what I love! I’m sticking to a much lighter schedule for the time being whilst I regain my strength, although it’s going to be difficult not to go full whack!

Here’s a screenshot of Holly & Percy having a quick jump yesterday evening prior to the 100 Championship at Dauntsey Park tomorrow. Percy is on FIRE!! 🔥

12 weeks since I last taught a lesson, and by god it’s good to be back 🤩

Especially to be teaching my own horse and his part loaner, Phoebe, who has been an absolute god send whilst I’ve been out of action 🙏🏻

It’s been a while since I posted. A long while.

I’ve always thought I had hip problems. I would get aching pains and the old jolt in my right hip, particularly after riding a wide horse, or when it was cold. I just thought that one day I’d need it replaced, as dodgy hips seem to run in the family.

But then back in May, the pains got a lot worse and I was limping for most of the month. Then sciatica flared up, which I’d never experienced before. Christ, I wouldn’t wish that level of pain on anybody. It was excruciating.

I tried to persevere, but a week in and I had to cancel everything. My work, social life, days out with the kids. I was so immobile. The pain was constant, even sitting or lying down. It drew me to tears most days.

After a lot of back and forth with my GP and various physios, I decided to go private, and I saw a hip specialist - who immediately referred me to a spinal specialist.

After crying down the phone to the specialist’s secretary, she rushed me in for an MRI. It turned out the disc between L5 and S1 (very low down in my spine) had herniated and had impinged the sciatic nerve. As a first course of treatment I decided to try a steroid injection, which was an uncomfortable procedure to say the least, and unfortunately didn’t work for me.

After a discussion with my consultant, it became apparent that the only option remaining to me was surgery. I’d really wanted to avoid going under the knife, the thought scared the bejeezus out of me, and I was engulfed by potential post surgery problems and risks. But by this time I could only walk a very short distance with a crutch, I was bent over double most of the time, and I was constantly in agony. I was fed up, grumpy, angry, and depressed. It had to stop.

And thank god I chose to do this when I did. The surgeon told me afterward that if we’d waited much longer I could have been left with permanent nerve damage. Which is a terrifying thought.

I’m thankful to say that now, 5 days post op, I’m upright again and recovering well. I finally feel like there’s light at the end of the tunnel, and the thought of getting back to work and normality again is exciting for me.

As soon as I’m back to work and regularly around horses again (I miss it more than I like to admit), I’ll be posting more regularly. Not just about training and coaching, but personal stuff too. I think it’s important that I’m open with my followers and riders so they can be open and honest with me when things don’t feel great. We only have one body, look after it!

I can’t put into words how proud I am of these two. What a blast. All the training has paid off.
Climbing from 91st after dressage to 27th after xc as a 6 year old is PHENOMENAL.
There were tears as she crossed the finish line!

Yesterday my lovely client and friend Jade offered me a quick jump on her super steed, Ginge, at the end of her lesson. We have been working on her confidence following a couple of falls and getting her mojo back.

Something I almost never talk about (especially not on social media) is my own confidence. My confidence whilst coaching has never been so high, I have phenomenal riders who work so hard to improve, and they always take advice on board. But after having two children, and my own horse Tom losing his way over a fence for one reason or another, my own confidence jumping has never been so low. I would love to have the time and motivation to get us back into it, but realistically I can’t be as consistent as I was pre-parenthood.

Jumping Ginge over some (very small!) fences yesterday gave me the boost I didn’t know I needed. He is very honest and forgiving, which is exactly what I needed to help me leave the ground without overthinking, over riding or berating myself for shoddy planning. I loved it. I actually felt that I might, one day, be able to get back to a fraction of my former self in the saddle.

I guess what I’m saying is when rider confidence becomes a problem, surround yourselves with people who support you in various ways. Not just a good coach who will help you through any wobbles, not just a yard best friend who will hold your hand on a bad day, but a whole team of people you can rely on to make everything feel okay again.

And most importantly, remember that your journey is YOUR journey. You’re on your own time line, and you will create it as you make it happen in your own way 🤗
