This horse was presented to me this week with bi lateral forelimb lameness and has been diagnosed by the vet with navicular changes to the front feet
After discussing the shoeing plan with the vet it was decided to shoe the horse with a roller motion style front shoe to ease his break over and the new Jim Blurton Farrier Products 3D Half Mesh Pads with Schufill Hoof Putty to absorb concussion at the back half of the foot
I’ve started to use this set up on a number of horses with different problems and I am finding they are extremely effective in both the half and full mesh versions
Hopefully we will see some significant improvement, he certainly walked away more comfortably post shoeing!

Morning Everyone!!

So after 51 days and 3 operations the surgeon yesterday told me I could start back at work!!

Unfortunately the surgery I was going to have in around 6 months time I now need to have in 8 weeks on the 30th March and will need to have 3 weeks off after this next operation

For now though I’m just going to enjoy being back at work doing the job I love and have missed for the last 7 weeks!

If anyone is expecting to hear from me and hasn’t or is needing a farrier visit then please do get in touch there is space in the diary this week and next to accommodate you all!!

I just want to thank you all for your patience and loyalty over the last 7 weeks while I have been unable to work and I really am looking forward to seeing you all!!

Afternoon everyone

Finally a POSITIVE update for you all!!

This morning I have had my Post Op check with the surgeon at Moorfield Eye Hospital and the operation I had last week which involved them putting silicone oil in my eye to hold my retina in place is working and the retina has stayed where it is meant to!!!

I will need another check up in around 2 weeks with the surgeon before I can return to work and in around 6 months time I will need to have another operation but for now I can carry on getting on with what will be ‘normal life’ for me now

To say I’m pleased is an understatement, the last 5 weeks have without doubt been the most testing of my life, not just physically but mentally as well, without my amazing wife Lucy who has been an absolute rock through this even when she’s been finding it all too much as well, the rest of my family who have been there for us through all this, our small group of amazing friends and my awesome clients I wouldn’t of got through this without you all so I thank each and everyone of you for anything and everything you have done for Lucy, Isla, our pack of dogs and myself over the last few weeks, I will never forget or be able repay the kindness people have shown us ❤️ 👨‍👩‍👧 🐕

Evening everyone!!

Just wanted to let you all know that today 30 days after my accident, operation number 3 is all done and I’m on the road to recovery!!!

Today’s operation was a success!!!

I have a post op check in a weeks time when the surgeon will make sure everything has held correctly in the eye and then he can give me a definite date that I will finally be able to return to work!!

I don’t know where to begin with who to thank, my wife Lucy has been a rock this last month going through all this with me, taking me to appointments, putting drops in my eye every hour of the day, visiting me everyday when I was admitted to GWH, in hospitals while I’m operated on and yet still looking after Isla and the dogs while I haven’t been able to she really has taken the ‘in sickness and in health’ part of her wedding vows to another level ❤️

The lads that have helped so much with keeping work on track and will still be helping until I can get back to normal, it’s a debt I won’t ever be able to repay when you run your own business your biggest worry is always what will happen if I ever get injured and the answer is your friends step up and cover your back 💪🏻

To all my customers that have phoned and messaged checking in how I am it really has helped keep me going this last month and thank you for all being so patient and understanding with appointments while I am out of action, I promise it won’t be long and I will be back working as soon as I can!!

To anyone that has called or messaged today while I have been in, I will sit down tomorrow morning and get back to you all 👍🏻

Morning everyone hope you have all had a good Christmas 🎄 and you’re all looking forward to seeing in the New Year!!

Just wanted to give you all a bit of an update on things as it’s been a busy week!

On Monday evening I was referred by GWH to Moorfields Eye Hospital in London

I met with the VRE Consultant on Tuesday and they operated on my eye on Wednesday

The operation successfully removed the piece of metal that had been in my eye for 16 days!!

During the operation he also had to reattach my retina which has involved putting a gas into my eye, this course of treatment means that for 7 days I have lie flat face down only allowed to stand up for 10 minutes every hour, the hope is this will reattach the retina and give me the best possible chance of having light perception in my left eye

I have a review with the surgeon in London on Tuesday 4th January when hopefully he will give me the good news that I can start getting on with recovering from all this and start getting back to what will be the new normal for me, there is light at the end of this long tunnel!!

To everyone that is due a farrier visit next week I will be getting everything sorted in the next couple of days, I want to reassure everyone that I am still here and will be back to work as soon as I can but in the mean time I have some great friends that are very good farriers and I can’t thank them enough for helping keep on top of things while I am out of action

Anyway enough about me, I hope you all have a brilliant new year and I really can’t wait to be back out and about again seeing you all in the new year!!

Evening everyone

Just wanted to give you all an update

After what has probably been the worst week of my life this evening I was finally allowed to go HOME 🏡 back to my family!!

The IV antibiotics and steroids that I have been having for the last week have improved the infection and inflammation in my eye to a point where the doctors are happy to let me return home on tablets with daily reviews in the eye clinic and if everything continues to improve my second round of surgery will hopefully be on the 29th December

I’m far from out of the woods as the metal that went in my eye is still there and needs to be successfully removed before my recovery can fully begin, the recovery time from my next surgery will be around a month

To the rock that is my wife Lucy I can honestly say that I don’t know how I would have got through this without you by my side you have somehow coped with a baby, 7 dogs and me stuck in a hospital bed only allowed in for 1 hour a day and that hour has always been spent watching a doctor look in my eye and prod me with a needle or 10 🙈

The lads that have all rallied round me and offered all their help with keeping on top of all my horses I cannot thank you enough and will never be able to fully repay the debt

To all my customers, friends and family that have called, messaged and kept me semi sane this last week while all this has been going on THANK YOU!! If there is anyone I haven’t replied to I am sorry!

It’s not until your in a crisis that you realise how many good people you have in your life around you and it is extremely humbling to know I have so many in mine!!

Anyway I will keep you all updated as things develop and I can honestly say that I cannot wait to get back to work with a bang in 2022!!

Just want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and prosperous New Year!! 🎄

Tom

Evening Everyone,

Things have taken a turn for the worse for Tom today, and he has been admitted to hospital this evening for IV therapy.
Unfortunately, despite the operation which removed lots of infection from the eye, daily injections into the eye, a huge concoction of medications, and hourly eye drops since Tuesday, the infection is just getting worse. Tom is devastated to be in hospital, when all he wants is to be back to normal, but he understands if he doesn’t have this therapy, there is a high risk he could develop a clot behind his eye which could go to his brain.
The condition Tom has developed is very serious, and we are hoping the IV therapy is going to help. We have accepted his sight will not return, we now just hope and pray this treatment works, so he improves and can come home.

Please can you all keep Tom in your thoughts, and he will be bored stiff here in hospital, so I know he will appreciate a few messages tomorrow. I’m sure he will be sorting out all next weeks appointments as doing this is helping him keep positive at the moment!

A huge thanks to all the boys that have rallied round to see all Tom’s customers this week, and to all those who have helped support me. Let’s hope next week is a better one!

Lucy xx

‼️‼️UPDATE ‼️‼️

Evening all, Lucy here again.

I’ve just collected Tom from hospital following his emergency surgery today. The surgery was not very successful due to the amount of swelling and infection present, so he is going to have to have another surgery next week to try and repair the eye. The brilliant news is, his Retina is not as badly damaged as they initially thought, meaning some level of sight (we are unsure of how much) is looking optimistic!!!
Tom has an appointment with the eye specialist tomorrow, to discuss further surgery plans, and we are keeping positive for this.

We plan to sit tomorrow morning and go through the diary, and arrange appointments with other farriers that are helping Tom out during this time. It is crucial Tom has at least 1 month off of work following the second surgery, so again, please bare with us during this stressful time.

I have been inundated with messages, calls and well wishes, and I cannot begin to express how thankful I am that there are so many people praying for Tom’s speedy recovery. Although he is not out the woods yet, we are feeling more hopeful than this time yesterday. Thank you all again, and I’ll keep you updated 💚
(A picture of the lovely Tom himself, rocking his new eye patch!!! 🤪)

📌📌📌URGENT NOTICE 📌📌📌

Evening all, it’s Tom’s wife Lucy here, Tom has unfortunately had an accident at work, and he needs to have emergency surgery in the morning. He has badly damaged his eye, and currently has no vision, the consultant is not sure if this will ever return.

Please can all customers bare with us over the next few days, while Tom gets over the surgery. We will be in contact over the next few days to rearrange appointments, Tom is lucky to have some fabulous friends who are farriers who are going to help out.

With the festive period close, I know lots of you will be enjoying your horses as you have time off work, and we will try our hardest to make sure their feet remain in tip top condition so you can do this, but please respect that Tom does need rest, his post op care is crucial in trying to regain the sight.

Tom is understandably devastated and extremely worried, please all keep your fingers crossed for him.

Thanks

Rain - I know we need it, but our horses don't!

A word of warning - the rain on our water starved grass is super charging it with sugar, and as a consequence, we are seeing a flurry of laminitis and colic cases.

Please monitor how much grazing your horses and ponies are getting - the fields look bare but they are eating the sugar rich new growth.

Track systems, strip grazing and grazing muzzles can all help reduce grass intake.
Periods off grazing on hard standing or stabled with hay can reduce risks of problems too.

Check those crests! A firming up of crests on the fat/insulin resistant horses and ponies can be an early warning sign for laminitis.
