This is Trouper, he’s on week three of our introduction to tracking course.
We were concerned that due to his vestibular disease he wouldn’t be able to track. Well he’s proved us all wrong and he’s loving it. On our last session he managed a 175 yds track, despite this challenging condition. Well done Trouper!!!

Hello, we are pleased to announce the start of a new introduction to tracking course.
Do something amazing and take the first step into a fantastic and exciting pastime that you and your dog can share together.
Tracking is a skill that you and your dog can learn together, giving you the ability to follow a track laid by a person over long distances…….think of a police dog tracking a fleeing criminal.
Our introductory course runs once a week for 6 weeks. Training on either a Thursday or Sunday at 1300 hrs for 1.5 hours. All our introductory course training takes place in the Axminster area.
The start dates for this course are Thursday 14th or Sunday 17th of November 2024.

Huge congratulations to our brand-new Dog and handler teams for completing their introduction to tracking course, here in Axminster.
Our teams are now able to follow a 30 minute old human scent trail over 4-500 m with deviations along the way. What an achievement, considering that only three weeks ago none had ever tracked before.
Our five teams are now going on to our intermediate training course, at the conclusion of which they will be of a similar tracking standard to police dogs.
Tracking with your Dog, is not only great fun for you but it’s also a super important outlet for your Dog to fulfil their instinctive need to hunt.
If you think you’d be interested in this exciting activity and if your dog needs a job, tracking is for you.

Last night saw the first session of our basic introduction to tracking course, here at Lyme Bay Dog Training.

We had six fantastic dogs out with us, two Dobermans, a German Shepherd, a Golden Retriever, an English Springer Spaniel, and a Working Collie, none of whom had ever done any tracking before. We had a great session and everyone performed excellently.
I’m sure we’ll see plenty of progression in the coming weeks.

The aim of our six session basic course is to give our dogs and their handlers a solid foundation on which to build their tracking skills. Look out for more content from this course following their progress.

The future… we’re able to coach you and your dog along the journey to Police Dog trials standard, competition work and all points in between.

Please message us for further information or if you have any questions regarding tracking, any other search disciplines or behavioural issues.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my post expressing an interest in a Tracking course. I’ve been blown away by the response and have been inundated with requests for the course. Due to the numbers and only having a limited number of places, I think the fairest thing to do is pull the first ten names out of the hat. I’ll message you if your name is drawn and put everone else on the reserve list.
Please follow me at Lyme Bay Dog Training for more dates in the near future.
Thanks,
LBDT.

Have you ever seen a police dog tracking, chasing down the scent of a fleeing criminal or missing person?

Do you know that all dogs are capable of tracking?

Like most search exercises, dogs find tracking both enjoyable and stimulating, it also fulfills their instinctive need to hunt, this is an important outlet and natural canine behaviour.

Tracking is a satisfying and fun activity for both and your dog to share, it requires minimal equipment and can be done practically anywhere at anytime.

Starting in September, I will be running tracking courses in and around the area, numbers will be limited.
If interested please message me for further details.

Just for interest…..do you know that majority of dogs I see with behavioural issues can largely be attributed to a poor choice of breed or breed understanding when choosing the new dog or puppy?

They are mostly working/part working hunting, shepherding breeds, that need heaps of the right physical and mental stimulation.

Most have been chosen for their appearance and not what’s going on under the bonnet, in their DNA.

A good example is with some of the Cockerpoo’s I see, often beneath the cute teddy bear looks, lurks a beast with an insatiable appetite for exercise and to hunt. If these genetic needs are left unfulfilled it can lead to frustration and all sorts of behavioural problems down the line.
Mixing a Poodle with a working Cocker will generally produce a different dog than one bred with a steadier show Cocker.

It’s important to know what your dog’s got in it.

I also see lots of re-homed dogs that have been a poor match with their new owners. Most dogs homes go to great lengths to ensure a good match when it comes to re-homing their dogs.

Others are less diligent, I have been helping a young couple who have re-homed a dog from Albania. It’s is clearly a large mountain type dog and 3-4 years old, beyond that nothing else is known about him. They have never owned a dog before and live a small house with a tiny garden. Remarkably the dog is showing lots unwanted behaviours and will probably need re-homing again with an experienced owner in a suitable environment.

I am able to offer help and advice if you are thinking about getting a new dog or puppy. Please share with anyone you think may benefit.
