Lyme bay dog training with Search Dogs Southwest are excited to announce a number of tracking and man trailing taster days for spring 25.

WHAT IS TRACKING ? tracking is a dog and handlers ability to follow the scent of ground disturbance created by a tracklayer.

WHAT IS MAN TRAILING ? trailing is a dog and handlers ability to follow the scent of an individuals personal odour along a route they have taken.

These search disciplines are closely related and come naturally to our dogs, with structured training we will bring out and exercise their abilities, as owners you will learn how to read your dog whilst searching.

Each day will comprise of 6 hrs guided learning/ tuition to give you and your dog a real insight into this fun, fascinating and fast growing activity. No specialist equipment needed just a comfortable harness and a long lead/line.
Timings will be 10-4pm, drinks and light refreshments will be provided. The cost will be £75 per day.

If you enjoy your taster day, a programme of tracking and trailing courses will be available throughout the year. These courses will run in line with the UK Tracking Dog Association (UKTDA) standards for assessment.

We are approaching the end of our man-trailing course and today saw Jaffa and Pheonix along with thier handlers complete a 3.5 mile pursuit trail, following a single track layer across varying terrain. This is a tremendous achievement and testament to the hard work they’ve put in.

Lyme Bay Dog Training are pleased to offer new Introduction to Tracking course dates for 2025.

What is tracking ? Think of a police dog on a harness and long line following the path of an offender from a crime scene or searching for a missing person with his handler in tow.

This is something your dog is capable of doing too.

As with all search exercises, dogs find tracking both enjoyable and stimulating, it also fulfills their instinctive need to hunt, this being an important outlet and natural canine behaviour, which will relieve tension, anxiety and other stressors in your dog.

Tracking is an exciting and fun activity for both and your dog to share, it requires minimal equipment and can be done practically anywhere at anytime.

Our courses will start on Thursday 16th and Sunday 19th January. Both will run for six consecutive 1.5 hr weekly morning sessions, the course is priced at £150.

This is Trouper, he’s on week three of our introduction to tracking course.
We were concerned that due to his vestibular disease he wouldn’t be able to track. Well he’s proved us all wrong and he’s loving it. On our last session he managed a 175 yds track, despite this challenging condition. Well done Trouper!!!

Good morning, we have a couple of places remaining on our introduction to tracking course. This exciting course starts Thursday 3rd Oct or Sunday 6th Oct and runs for one day over six consecutive weeks.
This is a fantastic way to get out with your dog and share a sport you can both enjoy together.
Both Thursdays and Sundays run 1300-1430 in Axminster and are priced at £150 for the whole course.

Huge congratulations to our brand-new Dog and handler teams for completing their introduction to tracking course, here in Axminster.
Our teams are now able to follow a 30 minute old human scent trail over 4-500 m with deviations along the way. What an achievement, considering that only three weeks ago none had ever tracked before.
Our five teams are now going on to our intermediate training course, at the conclusion of which they will be of a similar tracking standard to police dogs.
Tracking with your Dog, is not only great fun for you but it’s also a super important outlet for your Dog to fulfil their instinctive need to hunt.
If you think you’d be interested in this exciting activity and if your dog needs a job, tracking is for you.
