We had another lovely Open Day and Dog Show yesterday and the weather although cloudy at least the rain stayed away until after the event. Thank you to all of you who came along and supported us, we hope that you enjoyed meeting all the animals, the dog Show ,And the cake, yes , the cakey bakey lady had been busy again. We all work extremely hard to make this a pleasant day, welcoming the local communities to our wonderful sanctuary. Finally - A special thanks to our sponsors who continue to support us .
I will get a final total when we have worked out the expenses of setting up the day. Love Pam x

This is sweet little Wren , a small mini Shetland cross that came into the sanctuary last year with 2 others mini's and a larger pony who was rescued from a large case. For the last few months they have all done really well making a good recovery.
Unfortunately this last week little Wren has developed Sweet Itch which is an allergy to the midge fly and has become quite chronic. It is a horrible condition that causes such misery to its sufferers . Here is Wren sporting her new sweet itch rug and mask, it is something that Wren will have to live with for the rest of her life and we will do everything we can to keep her comfortable. She will need another Ruggles rug and another fly mask plus lotions and potions. What a sweet little girl she is and as always we will do our best. Thanks to Layla and Cerys two of our Saturday girls for the photos. Love Pam x

It is getting towards that time of year when we start preparing for our annual Open Day which is on 1st September . There is quite an outlay to organise this day and we rely heavily on sponsorship to keep the sanctuary running and enabling us to continue to rescue those animals that need our help.
We are looking for sponsorship for our dog show classes and/or adverts in our programme. It is £10 for a dog show class and £25 for an advert. If you would like to support us then please get in touch. Love Pam x

It has been a good hot few days, and many farmers are out and about working all the long hours they can. My son Peter took his holidays this week to go and help his mate bring the hay in, some of which was made for the H.A.C.K. Shetland ponies. When Peter brought a trailer of sweet smelling hay to the sanctuary, volunteer Beth stayed to help unload it into the large Barn, who is pictured here on top of the bales, throwing them down to Bill, who by the way is 77 years old, whilst Peter stacked. Most people go to the beach or abroad for their holidays, but Peter spent his time helping a local farmer and the sanctuary, now that is dedication . As the saying is, you can take the boy out of farming but you can't take the farming out of the boy Thanks for your help Beth. Love Pam x x

Well, it has been a very hot day today, and the fly's certainly seem to be enjoying it, pesky little creatures, trying to change Sam's poultice with them buzzing around his legs is not easy.
Sam has been lame off and on these last 2 or 3 weeks, we have had both the farrier and the vet out but the abscess is being a little stubborn to say the least, the problem is that Sam has higher ringbone on his opposite leg and he is putting more pressure on this to relieve the pain on his abscess leg thus causing problems with his ringbone, such a viscous circle. It is quite a worry, Sam is a lovely 17 h.h. well built boy and well loved. Pictured here in his shelter that was sponsored and built by support of Prof. Derek Knottenbelt and the Vets with Horsepower team. Sam seems to really love this shelter and spends a lot of time in it. As always we will do our best for this lovely lad, so fingers crossed he recovers soon. Love Pam x x

After the early rain it turned out to be quite a nice day, made even better by the return of Amelia who is home for the summer from Uni and wanted to help out again which is so beneficial for Ezzy (who is now 24 years old) as she enjoys the attention that Amelia can give her and here they are having a fab time together. love Pam x

My goodness, it just seems to get hotter and hotter, I have to say it was a relief to get home and enter the coolness of my old house, which is great for me, but what of the horses, ponies donkeys, pigs, goat, ducks and chickens.
Yesterday Peter and I scrubbed out all the water tanks and filled them with fresh clean water, so important during this heat wave that all the animals have access to fresh water and a shelter from sun and flies. Here at H.A.C.K. all our animals have shelters mainly thanks to the Elise Pilkington Charitable Trust and Vets with Horsepower who have supported us providing funds for such facilities. Of course It is Mr B's who has the task of building these to our requirements. What a splendid job he does.
We all do our best for the welfare of the horses and other animals that come into our care, and hopefully will continue to do so for many years to come. Love Pam x

What a beautiful day it has been, wall to wall sunshine with a bit of a breeze, just right for giving Ezz a bath, although she insisted on sharing the water. dirty water at that, cheeky little madam, well, she looked a lot cleaner, but not so much me Here she is with her zebra rug.
Ralph was feeling a bit left out, so I gave him his treat ball to which he decided he would have a game of football with it, he was very impressive and said he was hoping to try for a local club.
Because Sam was feeling a bit grumpy due to an abscess I decided to give him a treat ball too, but he wasn't interested in playing football he just rocked it backwards and forwards until all the treats fell out. Clever boy.
Tomorrow and for the next few days we will all be experiencing our first blast of summer, just right for making hay. thank goodness we now buy ours in, those days are long gone.. Love Pam x

Exactly 23 years ago to this very hour, I was sitting in my landrover on the H.A.C.K. yard, waiting a very special delivery. This was the second night I had sat in my landrover, waiting watching and checking on a mare that was due to foal. When nothing happened on the first night I returned home at about 8 am to get a couple of hours kip before once again returning to the sanctuary and carrying out all the jobs that had to be done on a daily basis.
As it grew dark and I was playing the waiting game, I settled back into my very comfy car seat, it was eerily quiet when I noticed something move out of the corner of my eye, something was moving down the yard and past my vehicle, I think I was holding my breath, when somebody was calling "Pam"..... Oh, it was Vicky, she had come to keep me company. After a couple of hours and still no baby, Vicky left. Then at abt 2 am things started to move, suddenly Jane turned up on the way home from work, and we both watched as a new baby was born, the mare struggle to give birth and we had to help it into the world.. Navel spray at the ready baby was checked and navel sprayed to stop any infection creeping in. The mare passed the placenta and Jane laid it all out to make sure it was complete (well, I didn't have my rubber gloves on, 😅 and these girls need to learn good husbandry)
We had a beautiful little c**t foal that we called Solstice Fellipe, and here he is pictured as a 3 year old having a pamper session with Beth.
It had been a long 2 days, but finally mare bedded down with a nice warm mash, and baby suckling well. Happy Days. I was glad to catch up on some much needed sleep, but you know when you have animals their needs have to come first and to me, it's all in a days work. Love Pam x

I followed with interest the Vets with Horsepower 2024 European veterinary lecture tour, raising funds for the groups chosen charities. A team of well known vets all on motorbikes traveling hundreds of miles to give equine lectures in various European countries. Photographs and video's can be found on their face book page.
A belated Happy Birthday To Derek

I have to be honest and say it's been a bit of a struggle lately, with all the extra hours and work involved with the rehabilitation of a neglected and unwell horse or two or three, or any animal that is in your care, but being the founder and a trustee of the sanctuary I take my responsibilities seriously. So here we have Rishy now well on his way to full recovery and beginning light in-hand work. He has bonded with me well and has begun to put his trust in me, it takes time to build confidence and Rishy is doing really well. I am very please with him.
On the other hand, poor old Sam has been a bit under the weather and suffered an abscess in his hoof and Jason our farrier came to investigate and release the pressure, so now it is tubbing, treating, rebandaging and keeping it all clean, (he's a big boy and leans on you and, boy, he's heavy) unfortunately Sam isn't able to have shoes and pads fitted because of the pain it causes to his higher ringbone. Hopefully he will be better soon. Here he is having a rest and showing off his new fly rug that Helen kindly bought him. Doesn't he look smart. Love Pam x

Our Fab Sanctuary

The H.A.C.K. Horse Sanctuary is a Rescue-Rehabilitation-Education Centre that is dedicated to the welfare of the horse.

Founded in March 1992 by Pamela Bluck it has grown from strength to strength into a successful small charity (no. 1025157). H.A.C.K. are also full welfare members of the National Equine Welfare Council, which means we have been fully inspected and passed the high criteria and standards that are required.

H.A.C.K. is unique in the fact that it is run entirely by volunteers who really are dedicated to the welfare of the horse. H.A.C.K. is fortunate in having Prof Derek Knottenbelt as advisor who has been of great support from the very beginning and also the late Graham Capper, law advisor and supporter, greatly missed.

H.A.C.K. also works within the community in many different ways from educational school visits, care home visits, Duke of Edinburgh awards, Saturday kids etc.
