Farms can be wonderful places for children to grow up, where independence and responsibility are fostered, and family relationships are strengthened. They are also a fantastic source of learning where organised visits can inform and inspire children from all backgrounds to learn about where their food comes from and how the industry is vital to everyday life.

However, the sad fact is that farms are the only workplace where children continue to die, in what is always a horrific tragedy for families and heart-breaking for their communities.

Slurry gas is a mixture of gases – the most dangerous gas is hydrogen sulphide which is extremely poisonous. At a low concentration this gas will attack your sense of smell so you won’t even know it’s there.

At higher concentrations you will, very quickly, find it harder to breathe and become confused and collapse.

At certain concentrations ONE BREATH CAN KILL.

Top Tips:
• Many people have drowned in or been asphyxiated by slurry or slurry gas. Often a second person trying a rescue is killed too.
• Fence off lagoons, pits and tanks to stop anyone falling or climbing in. The standard of fencing should be very secure.
• Keep everybody well away from areas that store slurry.
• Carefully plan slurry stirring and pumping tasks. Keep unauthorised people away.
• Mix/stir on a windy day, always mix from a position outside any building. Stirring inside a building needs more safety measures and should be avoided.
• Gas is released as soon as mixing starts.
• No one should have access to the area where slurry is being stirred until at least 30 minutes after the work is complete.

Machinery and transport continue to be the main causes of life changing and life ending injuries on farms.

Poorly used or faulty vehicles and machinery are a major cause of death and serious injury on our farms.

Top Tips:
• Safe Stop – Handbrake on, controls in neutral, engine off and remove keys!
• Plan your jobs beforehand
• Never remove or modify guards to save time.
• Only use a machine if you know how to use it safely and have received suitable training. Always read the manufacturer’s instructions
• Machines have no brains so always use your own! A second of lost concentration can cost your life.

Handling cattle and livestock always involves risks: the risk of being hurt physically by an animal that is frightened or has been startled and the risk of being hurt due to poorly thought-out handling facilities, the misuse of equipment or failing to maintain them.

Top Tips:
• Take the time to understand/know the behaviours of the livestock you are working with. Make sure they are handled by trained and agile workers.
• Make sure your working area is safe and has safety measures in place. E.g. good handling facilities for example adequate gates, a well maintained crush, fence heights appropriate for the animals being managed. etc.
• Always have an escape route or refuge for emergency situations while working with animals
• Stop disease/infection passing from animals to humans by ensuring you have good personal hygiene practices and wear the correct PPE when working with animals.
• Always be careful around cows and heifers with new-born calves and NEVER turn your back on a cow following calving.

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY MENTAL HEALTH?

Sometimes people get intimidated by the words ‘Mental Health’ but it simply means anything to do with our emotional, psychological and social wellbeing. Everyone has mental health just the same as they have physical health but why are we happy to talk about one and not the other? People can keep this to themselves through fear of being treated differently or judged.

Latest research revealed that 95% of farmers under 40 believe that mental health is the biggest hidden problem facing farmers today. In 2018, the Farm Safety Foundation - Yellow Wellies launched a Mind Your Head campaign to raise awareness of this growing issue in the industry and, since then, one thing has become evident; farmer health and wellbeing cannot, and should not, be ignored – by any of us.

Putting our people first is what we do at Carr’s Billington. As part of this we promote and encourage safe ways of working.

For several years, the HSE Fatal Injuries in Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing GB Report released for Day One of Farm Safety Week has shown that farming continues to have the poorest safety record in the UK and Ireland.

This year’s figures are likely to show no drastic improvement which means that means actions and attitudes of those working in the industry need a major rethink.
This year’s Farm Safety Week Farm Safety Foundation - Yellow Wellies offers an opportunity for a reset in the way farmers approach farm safety and risk taking.
