(1)

The Animal Health Professions’ Register is a voluntary regulator of allied animal health professionals which includes the following subgroups:

• Animal Chiropractic and Manipulation
• Animal Hydrotherapy
• Animal / Veterinary Physiotherapy
• Animal Sports Therapy and Massage

Membership of the AHPR is open to those professions who provide services for the treatment of animals under veterinary ref

erral and for the maintenance of health. Those professions providing treatment are required to base practice on evidence based therapies and clinical reasoning, as well as any therapies for which the benefits are observable and measurable. The aim of the register is to raise standards in the industry and assist animal owners and veterinary surgeons in ensuring that the professionals they use to assist in the treatment and health maintenance of their or client’s animals are suitably trained and accountable. All registrants have achieved a minimum standard of training, comply with Continuing Professional Development and hold appropriate insurance as required by the wider industry.

Hi I’m Jay.
I’m a McTimoney Animal Chiropractor and also a Kennel Club Accredited dog trainer. I work both in private practice and am a tutor for the McTimoney College of Chiropractic on the MSc Animal Manipulation course and the new integrated MVetChrio course.
I also work for an assistance dog charity and have an assistance dog myself. I specialise in working dogs, and work my own as Gundogs.
I have 5 dogs and all of that keeps me pretty busy!

I joined the board last year in the role of Regulation & Compliance Director. My responsibilities within AHPR are to process new member applications, oversee our CPD audit and work with insurance providers. I am also looking forward to supporting the rest of the board in the future raising awareness and working with other industry professionals.

AHPR would like to confirm that our 2024 CPD audit is now complete 🎉

Thank you to everyone who was randomly selected this year and well done for all covering such an interesting breath of ongoing learning. This ensures that we keep up with new developments in the industry and, as members of the AHPR can demonstrate a commitment to being the best and most effective practitioners possible.

The AHPR requires all registrants to cover 50 hours of CPD over every 2 year period and yearly we run an audit of a randomly selected 10% of members on the register.

More information about CPD can be found on our website and is always included when requesting an audit from a registrant.

IMPORTANT UPDATE
As part of the work calling for new Veterinary legislation, RCVS is running a consultation on their recommendations for the way it, and the veterinary profession, could be governed in the future. The consultation is open until 22 July - further details, including how to respond, are available below.

AHPR is talking directly with RCVS about this consultation. We are also more broadly discussing the various proposals for legislative reform, including our ideas for realistic regulatory models for our animal musculoskeletal professions.

We plan to invite registrants to an online meeting in July, before the consultation closes, to discuss these latest developments and hopefully answer your questions!

THE BENEFITS OF CANINE MASSAGE THERAPY:
Most of us know how relaxing a massage can be, particularly to relieve aches and pains caused by tense or over-worked muscles. Massage is one of the oldest known techniques for healing.

The benefits are just as applicable to the well-being of your dog!

Massage therapy can improve blood flow, reduce muscle spasms, and increase flexibility. It can also reduce swelling after surgery, help with osteoarthritis or mobility issues, improve athletic performance, and help manage chronic pain.

It is worth noting that dogs don’t have to be injured to benefit from massage. It can help maintain and improve the quality of life and mobility in older dogs and keep sporting dogs at the top of their game. It can even help dogs with anxiety and nervous behaviour.
