Exciting changes coming to Dundee Dog Training!

As the business grows alongside Honest Hounds, we have expanded our staff and service area so we can help people farther afield with a wide range of specialities. Dundee Dog Training will be a collective group comprised of Kym Cleary (The Dog Teacher), Willow Scott (Prodigy Dog Training), Kira Lutter (Canine Adventures), Syd Taylor (Canine Consultations Perthshire), and Hannah Green (Adventure Tails Dundee); all of these trainers work directly with behavior expert Jess Probst and have done for some time.

The team will be offering daily opportunities to join Educational Walks & Social Walks. Want to get involved? Just get in touch!

Meet Dougal 🐶
Dougal is a 12 week old West Highland Terrier pup, who attended today’s morning Educational Walk.

His owner is taking a very proactive approach knowing what she does with her puppy now impacts the type of behaviours he will display as an adult dog.

Appropriate socialisation with dogs, people, new things, etc. is one of the training aspects at the core of what we do at Dundee Dog Training. We love seeing new dogs come along.

Do you have a puppy?
Do you want a well-rounded adult dog who is calm and confident but can co-exist politely around people and other dogs?

Get in touch to get involved in our Educational Walks - A Training Class on the Move!

Dogs in Winter

It’s freezing out there isn’t it?! 🥶
It’s tempting just to play a quick game of ball and get back to into the warmth but please do warm up those muscles first.

As someone involved in dog bites I can’t help but notice and have to sadly report an increase in nips, bites and hospitalisations since the clocks changed.

I can assume perhaps people aren’t walking their dogs as much as it’s darker or perhaps doing shorter walks. But exercise is vital to keeping our dogs sane and balanced. Imbalanced behaviour such as having a short fuse, quick to temper and being less tolerant of things can happen if a dog is under stimulated and endorphins are low. This bite increase could also be because of discomfort. Stiff muscles through lack of warm up and cool down can be painful as we know.
Walk your dog 5-10 mins before throwing their ball or frisbee and do the same before going in the car. If you’ve learned how to rub their muscles they use for running you can do that too. You can prevent injuries by taking the time before allowing sprinting and then for the body to recover and get rid of that lactic acid 🐾

ℂ𝕒𝕔𝕙𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝔹𝕖𝕙𝕒𝕧𝕚𝕠𝕦𝕣

This is the hiding or attempt to hide of a thing your dog likes but doesn’t want right now.

This was videoed as part of our Health & Wellness workshop this past weekend where we discuss biomechanics, offer a variety of supplements the dogs can pick for themselves as well as talking about the health benefits and even medicinal value of botanicals and their extracts.

They are very popular especially among dog lovers who want to be proactive in their healthcare. (Our next one is 4th December in the evening)

If you have a dog that caches hard chews that teeth clean you might want to feed a little less. For example my own dogs have one meal a day that is a hard meaty item such as dried tendon, trachea, lung, duck foot etc (as they are all different sizes they get different weights) but this makes up some of their daily calories and is NOT extra. Oral health is of utmost importance - more to come on that subject! So please do make sure their food isn’t just kibble or soft minces.

If you’re interested in learning more about nutrition and wellness for your dog, please drop us a message 🍵🪴

We have an extended family, who all collaborate and help each other with trickier cases and share the emotional burden of these unprecedented times (so many dogs snapping and biting at their own people 💔 )

Jess Williams is Highlands based (put a pin in the middle of Scotland and that’s her homestead) but as you’ll read she works both in person and makes great headway remotely, with clients all around the world.

Her background in Law means she is analytical, a natural problem solver and critical thinker, ideal for working though problem cases.

She’s invested in a sparkly new website, where you can read about her own journey. With a proven track record of success, she's ready to help you where others haven't.

My Background In the past I was the owner of a very reactive dog - my Storm. She was a privately rehomed German Shepherd, and she very helpfully gave me a crash course introduction to the world of dog training and behavioural modification by being aggressive to all strangers anywhere in sight (inclu...

“Lack of appreciation for what a dog is” - great quote, great video. What do you think of the term “furbaby” ?

Stewart's opinion on the expression 'Furbaby'. Respect dogs for what they are, not some figment of our imagination.

A little treat for you!

As you may know most of my time is spent training an army of dog experts so we have people who can help with dog issues all over the UK (and beyond!) I’m also writing courses for Honest Hounds for dog lovers everywhere to be able to take an wholistic approach to caring for their dog.
This course “Self Selection” is all about giving the dog choice over their supplements, animals know ‘what they need.’ The course is designed to help you understand more about botanical extracts, their history and how modern medicine uses plant extracts. You can start your journey understanding what you can give to your dog when it’s under the weather or has stressful episodes.

Did you know that ginger 🫚 has anti-nausea properties? I have used it with rescues for many years to help overcome car sickness!

We have made this course as a beautiful gift for Xmas for friends, family or yourself and your own dogs.
The online course is released 1st December and you receive a posted box with 6 oils and 6 plant extracts to follow the course with. You don’t have to be a member to do any of our courses.

Love & Light,
Jess Probst

p.s. Limited boxes! Message the page for further details.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Bring back the dogs that were bred to be family pets and who have high tolerance for children.
They don’t require many many hours of high level stimulation like the working dogs that have for reasons only of fashion, made their way into normalcy.

Please consider versions of dogs that are bred for their docile, kind nature especially for purposes of being with people who have complex needs or want companionship.

It breaks everyone’s heart when working breeds end up in homes where they will never have their breed needs met and serve no purpose other than wait for cuddles. There are breeds that thrive on that life and they don’t often end up in rescue with behavioural issues.

Thank to Derry who supports this message and is the most wonderful companion to his human Louise 🐾

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐭 𝐛𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐦𝐬

Behaviourism is an approach that considers and studies observable behaviour, rather than focusing on mental processes or internal states. Behaviourists are taught that behaviour is primarily learned through conditioning and reinforcement.

Behaviourists put great influence on the role of environmental factors, such as rewards, punishments, and modelling, in shaping outward behaviour.

I believe there are missing puzzle pieces and that the science of Behaviourism could benefit significantly from integrating information from other sciences and sciences within sciences…

Cognitive Psychology field provides us with insights into mental processes; thought patterns, perception, attention memory and problem solving. Understanding the cognitive abilities of humans & dogs can help us change our teaching according to our clients learning style.

Sociology explores how social interactions, group dynamics, status and cultural factors shape behaviour and decision-making.

Developmental Psychology offers us understanding of how behaviour changes and develops across a lifespan of an individual so we can take into consideration what their needs are at different stages.

Behavioural Economics is teaching us to understand how individuals make decisions based on heuristics, biases, and emotion. (We can learn about loss aversion and framing effects which can be so useful in working with dogs & people.)

In Biology, Genetics examines the role of genes in shaping behaviour & temperament and Evolutionary Biology helps us understand how behavioural traits have evolved.

Another branch of biology, Ethology studies animals in their natural environments. By understanding a dogs' natural instincts and we can develop more teaching methods that are intrinsically relevant.

Neuroscience investigates the biological basis of why we do what we do, learning about brain structures, neurotransmitters, hormones and neural pathways - this body chemistry all influence behaviour. Understanding how the brain processes information can help us design training methods to optimise learning.

Pharmacology studies the effects of drugs, medications and substances we use on animals that contribute to behaviour.

Physics gives us insight into biomechanics- the physical forces involved in movement, such as muscle strength, posture, and coordination - all involved and influencing behaviour.

Ethics provides criteria for ethical treatment of animals in behavioural research, as well as giving us guidelines for practical work with pet or working dogs.

By including knowledge from these other fields, we can gain a more wider scope of understanding ALL the complex factors that influence behaviour.

Based on my time served experience, I believe that new dog trainers should focus on practical training methods rather than dusty theories like Skinner’s quadrants. Instead of striving to become a Behaviourist, I suggest exploring the broader field of animal behaviour, which includes other sciences, you’ll find these disciplines interconnected and you’ll develop a more wholistic and effective approach.
