Today I removed a fragment that was left inside the socket after a previous wolf tooth removal. There is no blame in this as it can happen to anyone. We always tell our clients that this is a possibility as wolf teeth are of a fragile nature. Just a good thing to make clients aware of what to expect.

About 70% of horses will have wolf teeth and they can be erupted or blind. Usually they will be removed as a 2 or 3 year old as they can interfere with the bit.

Whenever we remove a wolf tooth, extreme care is always taken.

The horse gets sedated and local anesthetic solution injected around the wolf tooth. This makes it a nice experience for the horse and the horse will keep its head still for us to work in the mouth.

The dental ligaments attaching the tooth are loosened with special tools and the tooth removed. As these vestigial teeth can be quite fragile they can fracture during this procedure and a fractured fragment can be left behind. After removal we check the socket with our mirror and the tools to make sure everything is out.

In this case it has taken many years to become apparent there was a fractured fragment left behind. I have checked her mouth previously and only last week I noticed the small opening in her gum and could feel the irregularity under the gum. Plus there was now an agitated response to pressure over this area. A part of the routine dental exam is to run your thumbs over the gum to check for a response.

There has been an issue with some head shaking. Hopefully that will now be resolved.

The horse will be on some pain relief for a few days and will get 2-4 weeks rest from the bit before she will be brought back into work. If you start them back too soon they may associate the pain from the healing area with the bit, so you should give them enough time to heal.

UCD Final year vet student Faye started her day with taking foot X-rays followed by an introduction to farriery with explanations from Martin Payne Awcf.

It was a reasonable busy day with vaccinations, a colic and some other routine visits.

By the end of the day she was taking off a shoe, successfully!

What do horse vets do in their spare time?

They go on a hack on the beach 🤩

The views from Tyrella and Murlough beach were even more beautiful from horseback. Especially on such a cracker of a day we had yesterday! We also got to see the grey seals on the sand banks from a distance.

Mary was our guide and she was great fun. Would highly recommend!

I think this is a really good post to figure out what to do in case of doubt, to figure out if you are dealing with a genuine emergency or urgency.

Please remember that you should always ring (instead of texting/whatsapping) in case of an emergency. This also is the best way to contact me for an emergency during the normal work hours as when my phone rings twice in a short period I will stop what I’m doing to answer the phone.

When I am not on call, the number of the vet who is on call will be on my voicemail, as I am part of a scheduled out of hours on call rotation - with the goal to have some down time for family and friends and to recharge the batteries!

We hope all of you have enjoyed Balmoral show as much as we did.

While Edwina got to admire a stunning eagle,
Quirine got to check in many equines including A Plus T**d for the racing to riding horse class. A Plus T**d won the 2022 Gold Cup at Cheltenham ridden by Rachel Blackmore - which made her the first female jockey to win the Gold cup!

There were also a lot of donkeys entered for the show including this cute mini 🥰

We wish everyone another great day at the show tomorrow and a great weekend!

Happy birthday to Manor equine vets - we are 5 years in business today!

The business has been growing steadily and this year Pamela (admin) and Edwina (part time veterinarian) have joined the team.

I would like to thank you all -clients, friends, family and colleagues local and from referrals hospitals- for your support, trust and help!

The Irish saddler spruced this up neatly!
Instead of leather it got new plastic straps that can be disinfected easily between horses.

Lots of little teethes needing attention and this speculum needed some new straps to keep up with the workload! Dont forget to get those gnashers looked at twice a year!

I am really proud to introduce Edwina Little BVSc MRCVS to clients and friends.

Some of you have already had the pleasure of meeting her out and about with me, as I was showing her around.

Edwina has been an equine practitioner for over 30 years. She is a graduate from Liverpool University School of Veterinary Medicine.

After graduation Edwina moved to the USA for an equine internship followed by a residency in Internal Medicine at North Carolina State University. After completion of these she set up her own equine practice in Southern Pines, NC instead of returning home to the UK. 

In 2021 she decided to come home to Ireland and was by chance introduced by a mutual friend and veterinarian to me.

When still in the USA, Edwina owned and showed her own horses on the Hunter-Jumper circuit, but now her interests are walking her two German Shepherd Dogs, cycling, working out at the gym and spending quality time with friends (both old and new) and family.

Edwina will be joining the team of Manor equine vets on a part time basis.

Her interest is general health and well being of the horse with a particular focus on lameness and poor performance.

Not sure if she is the first foal hitting the ground in County Down but it’s the first mare and foal check for me this season. 😄

First time mommy mare and filly foal were both in good form. The foal was up and drinking within 1 hour of foaling and the afterbirth was off within 2 hours and complete on both sides (inside and out).

As it’s still quite cold the owner has put one of the dog coats on the foal to keep it warm. 🥰

Good time to remember the 1, 2, 3 rule:

1️⃣hour post foaling: foal should be standing up. 🐎

2️⃣hours post foaling: foal should start drinking. 🍼

3️⃣hours post foaling: placenta (afterbirth) should be expelled.

If any of these 3 rules is delayed ring your vet for advise or a call out.

THE POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED.

Manor Equine Vets are looking for a Jack or Jill of all trades for office admin. Initially the position will be for 5 -8 hours per week, with possible extension of hours in the future.

Work includes duties such as stock take, admin, communication with suppliers and medication reps, tidying and errands.

This would suit an organised person with admin experience, who enjoys flexible working with a small friendly team. Veterinary or animal experience is not required.
