Brahma chicks first free range at 8 weeks old
Just worked it out and they are only 8 weeks old!
Baby brahmas meet the flock 😍
Today was the day for the baby brahmas to move to the field as one of them is crowing regularly!
I was worried they wouldnt hold their own although they are considerably bigger than the ex-commercials but wimps as theyre just babies! At 3 months old i think they may get bigger than Barack and he's a beast!!!
They met everyone through netting today and I'll tuck them into bed with some of the newer hens once it gets dark. They wont be out out at the same time as Barack so there wont be any fighting!
Theres a whole lot of sqwarking going on!!!
No new fandangled nest boxes in MY house thankyou very much!
So, how do we spend a bank holiday Monday down at Leybourne Layers? Why, we clean out the birds of course.
Popped in the 2 new crisp box nesting box, perfect fit. Rearrange the coop with perches, boxes, bedding, sprinkle some anti mite powder and its all cosy and lovely.
The chicken can now bask in the loveliness Ive created for them.....
Not blooming likely! This hen in particular is blooming FURIOUS that I've messed with their house and has promptly flung all the bedding out of the new boxes, absolutely everywhere and is trying to demolish the boxes!!! Barack is egging her on! (boom boom)
Oh dear.... back to the drawing board! 🤣🤣🤣
Let there be life ❤❤❤
Today has been all about quail. Drove to Weymouth to pick up 9 very pretty hens. In the chaos of preparing and setting them up, I forgot to take photos!
Stress levels not helped by one of the chickens REFUSING to go back in the run and both Martin and I had a very stressful half hour of herding through nettles and brambles 🤬
Meanwhile back at home and 2 days before I expected, these lil dudes arrived! 3pm not so much as a wobble and by 7pm 5 quail chicks hatched. Little monsters are fighting already!!!! Soooo cute 😍😍😍😍😍
Today was the first time for weeks that the chooks were allowed out due to bird flu. I didnt catch them coming out - it was too exciting! Did catch them waddling back in though! They will follow me anywhere for corn :P
Chick finds a worm on its first trip outside!
Ha ha ha one of them found a worm and the chase was on! All that was missing was the Benny Hill music 🤣🤣🤣
Im amazed at the instincts!
Gossiping about the new neighbours!
Gosh, EVERYONE has lots to say about the new neighbours!
1st look at their forever home :)
Hello new home
Existing chooks have plenty to say abput the new neighbours!
You stole half our palace and did WHAT??? There'd better be enough treats for us ALL!
Baby chicks having their first sand bath
The chicks are around 10 days old and growing like weeds! Gave them some sand/grit/oyster shell today and they couldnt get in there quick enough. The sand is for bathing, the grit for digestion and the shell for calcium. Im constantly amazed at how much they do by instinct.
Barak O'Brahma's first crow
Could I be any more delighted? Proper proud chicken mother today 😍 Barak is a proper big boy rooster; not only did I hear him crow for the first time today but he crowed to me in greeting 😍 #besottedwithachicken
