Jess was called to this foal out of hours with the owner reporting that she was flat and deteriorating. When Jess got there initially, the foal would stand with assistance but otherwise would lie flat.

A IgG test was performed, which assesses if the foal has had the correct amount of colostrum from the mare. Colostrum is so important as it contains all the antibodies needed to protect the foal from any bacteria/virus’ etc. The normal IgG level in a healthy foal is 800mg/dL and she had less than 400mg/dL! 😮

The owner brought this filly to our clinic where she had deteriorated massively in an hour to the point she wouldn’t stand. Jess and the owner performed a plasma transfusion which contains antibodies to boost the foals immunity. She was also started on broad spectrum antibiotics and a potent inflammatory because her lactate levels were elevated.

5 days later with close monitoring of blood work and nursing care this little filly trotted out of her stable onto the lorry to go home!

She has continued to improve at home and is a fabulous success story. Well done to the owner for acting so quickly 🐴 best of luck in the world little filly!

Due to our busy zone days on a Friday, we have decided to add another day on the Island which will be a TUESDAY!

This will be the same price as our zone day on a Friday, which is £35.

Same principle for appointments, you call to make an appointment and the day before we will call you with a time.

This will be starting next week, week commencing 3rd June!

The price of the visit is on top, however you can do this on your zone day 🐴

🐴 CINDERELLA 🐴 This little monkey was a blast from the past for our vet Jess today. Cinderella was in Leahurst 2 years ago when Jess was a student, after undergoing colic surgery. Cinderella had intensive medical treatment after the surgery, and she was always very well behaved.

Today she was being tested for PPID (Cushing’s) due to her age, commonly Cushing’s is diagnosed in horses over the age of 15.

A yearly test is available via ‘Care About Cushing’s’ for owners, and they get ONE test a year free of charge. If you would like to test your horse for Cushing’s, get in touch with our office 📞

😍 Shebert 😍

Everyone meet Shebert! Two years ago Shebert was diagnosed with laminitis, so severe that he needed surgery. Shebert came into our clinic where a dorsal hoof wall resection was performed. Whilst in the clinic, he was diagnosed with PPID (Cushings disease), which was the underlying cause for his laminitis.

Here we are two years on, with fantastic management by his lovely owner, regular farriery with correct shoes to help support him and regular blood samples to measure his cushings he is now a sound horse who is enjoying in hand and ridden work!

Shebert is a great example of team work with owner, farrier and vet and we are so pleased with this outcome for Shebert and his owner and long may it continue! 🐴

We are holding TWO castration days at the clinic in St Asaph on the following dates:
• Tuesday 5th March
• Tuesday 16th April

Requirements:
🐴 Must be UNDER the age of 3 years old
🐴 Must have TWO testicles present

Cost:
🐴 13.2hh and below = £150 including VAT
🐴 Bigger than 13.2hh = £200 including VAT

Cost includes any medication required for the surgery and the surgery itself.

Cost does NOT include any bute/danilon, vaccines or tetanus anti-toxin. This is at an additional cost.

This week our vets are attending BEVA congress down in Birmingham to attend lectures and workshops about medicine, lameness and surgery which are presented by specialists in their chosen area.
