Sharing all things related to homesteading, farming, gardening and enjoying life through it all while living in an urban environment and making the best of the lands around us. While farm to table and farm to market are seemingly popular catch phrases of the day, the truth remains that urban cities as a whole continue to decline, buildings are razed and often development focus is on city centers o

ver the prime, tax base of the surrounding residential neighborhoods and jobs decline. In cities like Troy the development of good paying jobs has not happened, many residents are at or below the poverty line, Lansingburgh School district is rated with over 53% of the students below. Development of diverse business base has not happened and the protection of housing stocks has not happened. Troy continues to push forward on development of new housing, catered around the city center, which has seen much revitalization in the past 10 years. We reviewed the number of city owned properties available for sale 75% of the are vacant lots. We are not talking livestock other than maybe a few chickens, a goat or two or even an aquaponics center, then the numbers can increase two fold, but actual fruit and vegetable production. As a co-operative model TUFI looks to take those currently unused lots and transform them to working farms. Allowing individuals to develop and build solid urban farm businesses that will help the economy of the individual, the neighborhoods, the city and other businesses that need produce. It will redefine farm to table or farm to market to what it is meant to be, fresh inexpensive produce, eggs and fish. Our goal is not to compete with groups like Capital Roots but help them with supplying more fresh local farm items to our residents and to incubate job creation in the world of urban farming.

Though this is not from Troy, it is from our neighbors in Warrensburg, it is relevant to Troy. Theft of hives, bees or bars is a crime. Even if you are lucky enough to have a hive in Troy, be on the look out, you are still at risk.

How to prevent beehive theft:
Choose a hive-site that is out of view from the public.
Control access to the hives.
Cameras or physical surveillance of the site.
Cover your hive equipment with your name or brand.
Covert tracking devices installed in hives.

I was asked how the growing is going this year.

Well honestly I think I have a fine crop of aphids, white flies and white cabbage moths.

2021 is a difficult growing year, how are your gardens going?

As a follow-up to last night's post on City of Troy's City Counsel President sponsored legislation to create an ordnance for. 45 day moratorium on new bee hives in the city of Troy. She referenced the following State legislation but did not explicitly cite it as the reason to create the moratorium, she did state that there was an issue in "a neighborhood" that would remain anonymous.

She would like our city's code enforcement to create the guidelines for new hives. While the health of the bees is paramount so is the consideration to neighbors but no one is qualified within code to enforce such things. They could not identify mustard garlic, state prohibited species, or even hog w**d, an invasive and dangerous plant. They barely can handle building code or other quality of life issues already on the books.

We say let the state finish the changes to the Ag and Market laws. It is bad enough they want bee keepers to be on a registry but require licensing and annual inspections.

As far as TUFI is concerned we are done with this elected official.

Establishes the apiary industry advisory committee; defines terms; requires the commissioner of agriculture and markets to give a beekeeper advanced notice of any inspection of an apiary; establishes the cooperative honeybee health improvement program; makes related provisions.

If you were thinking of starting bee keeping in the City of Troy, think again.
