Do you ever see a dog with a yellow jacket, lead or other accessories on that say "Nervous or Give me Space"

While your dog may be friendly, not all other dogs want to say hello and are being kept on a lead for a variety of reasons.

Please where possible to give dogs on lead space and always ask before approaching.
They could be...

🐶 Anxious or shy
🐶 Frustrated or excited
🐶 Simply don't want to play or be approached
🐶 In training
🐶 Recovering from an injury or operation
🐶 A little unsteady on their feet

If you see them wearing yellow, this could be a lead, harness or awareness lead, this is to help create awareness of the above.

Now its Autumn there are new possible dangers you need to be aware of for your dog

1. Horse Chestnuts aka Conkers!
Ingestion can cause marked gastro-intestinal signs such as drooling, retching, vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. The conker’s case and conkers themselves can also cause intestinal blockages.

2. Oaks and Acorns
The toxic ingredient in acorns is thought to be tannic acid, which can cause damage to the liver and kidneys. If your dog has ingested any they may show signs including vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and lethargy. Ingested acorns can also cause an intestinal blockage.

3. AntiFreeze - Ethylene Glycol
The worst of all the chemical spills is antifreeze, which can leak from a car’s radiator. Ethylene glycol ingestion is very dangerous. It is sweet tasting and very palatable and even a relatively small quantity can cause serious kidney damage and be fatal. The first signs of intoxication can be that your dog appears drunk. If you know your dog has ingested ethylene glycol or you have any concerns, contact your vet without delay. The prognosis becomes less good the longer the delay between ingestion of the antifreeze and initiation of treatment.

4. Chocolate
Chocolate sales rise around Halloween but remember it contains a stimulant called theobromine that’s poisonous to dogs. The amount of theobromine differs depending on the type of chocolate – dark chocolate has the most in it. Theobromine mainly affects the heart, central nervous system and kidneys. Signs will occur from 4-24 hours following ingestion and you may see vomiting, diarrhoea, restlessness, hyperactivity, rapid breathing, muscle tension, incoordination, increased heart rate and seizures

5. Mushrooms and toadstools
Some mushrooms are highly toxic to dogs but even fungi experts (mycologists) find it difficult to tell between them. The best bet is to ensure you keep all of them well out of your dog’s reach

If you pet has ingested ANY of the above please contact your Vets ASAP, especially if they have ingested Antifreeze
If you dog has ingested either of these then please call your Vet for advice

Of course, its not just this date that fireworks are let off sadly and a lot of dogs and other pets don't like fireworks, with the loud whizzing and bangs going off at random times

Did you know???

Three dogs survived the sinking of the Titanic!

Vetstreet states that the dogs were in first class and included a Pomeranian puppy - which her owner wrapped in a blanket to escape with, and everyone thought she was carrying a baby. Another Pomeranian and a Pekingese were also rescued.

🎃 PUMPKIN PATCH! 🎃 I am absolutely over the moon to announce that we are a GO for our very first pumpkin patch! I’m not sure what date we will open in October yet, but we have got lots of pumpkins growing in a field just up passed our farm cafe, and we can’t wait to welcome you. This will be a real patch with us growing pumpkins ourselves on our farm so you can enjoy your Halloween pumpkins with zero food miles attached, and they’ve all been naturally fertilised using our own 🐮 💩
