360 Degrees Outdoor Enabling journeys of growth and discovery in Scotland’s wild places

We are a small company, based on the edge of the Southern Highlands, whose aim is to help people get out and about and enjoy themselves in the wild, and not so wild, places of Scotland. With over 30 years experience of having fun outdoors ourselves, we are well placed to help you make the most of your time, whatever your plans and ambitions. Young
The main focus of our work is on helping young peo

ple 'find their feet’ in the outdoors, especially young people who might not otherwise get the opportunity to visit and explore some of the fantastic places that exist in Scotland beyond the margins of our cities. These days, a growing body of evidence is confirming what many of us have long believed: that the incredible multi-sensory experience of being active outdoors confers huge benefits on young people, both health-wise and in terms of their personal and social development. We’re constantly looking for new ways to encourage young people to engage with their environment, so visit our website at www.360degreesoutdoor.co.uk to find out more.

…and ‘Old'
However, we’re not just interested in young people - we’re keen to help anyone, of whatever age, get outside and have fun. Whether you’re simply looking for someone to ensure a family outing up Ben Nevis or one of Scotland’s other peaks goes smoothly, or looking for some help to prepare for a 3 Peaks Challenge, we are happy to help. Scotland’s mountains are fantastic places - living, changing landscapes: sometimes bathed in sunshine; swathed in atmospheric strands of mist at others. We would be delighted to help you explore this wonderful landscape, with its varied plant and animal life, its rich history and culture. Above all, we are committed to ensuring that your journey is a safe one, giving you an experience that will leave you with positive memories and a desire to come back and explore more of this wonderful land

Out and about with the SiMY weans yesterday as part of our Autumn hillwalking mini-adventure programme, aimed at helping them begin the journey towards being independent hill walkers. Yesterday was all about the basics of self care, learning to listen to, and respond, to the messages our bodies send us during the day on the hills.

We haven’t done one of these for a while - between torn Achilles, ageing dogs, gubbed knees and Covid, we reckon it’s about 2 years since Cat and I just got out of the car and went for a walk up a hill together!

Sad news to share: On Wednesday, we had to say “goodbye” to Bracken; our 17 year old Welsh Collie. She had a very peaceful end, sleeping soundly, wrapped in her favourite blanket while Cat and I cuddled her in the sunshine in our back garden until it was time to take her to the vet where she was very gently helped into her final sleep.
There is so much I could say about this beautiful wee dog, who’s been with Cat and I almost as long as we’ve been married. She’s been a part of all the most significant things we’ve done in life; trying out the ‘youth work in the outdoors’ ideas at Glen Kin, growing them at SiMY, my Summer and Winter ML journeys, Wendy’s 70 Munro Challenge. Supremely athletic, but with a gentle spirit that helped numerous kids who were scared of dogs to become more confident around her. One of my favourite memories of Bracken is the time she disappeared off the back of a group I was leading in poor visibility; Cat dropped back to try and find her, and soon encountered her, leading two members of the group, who had become separated, towards the rest of us. The couple told Cat that as they realised they were lost and started to panic a bit, Bracken appeared out of the gloom, wagged her tail at them, rounded them up and set off back to the rest of us, looking back to make sure they were following - solving my problem before I even knew I had it.
She relished being out in the hills, summer and winter, especially if it involved a night snuggled in the tent and seemed to adore the beauty of the places we visited; so many of the pictures i have are of her standing drinking in the views around her. We were so glad that one of the last trips we did with her, just a few days ago, was to Loch Morlich; one of her favourite spots, and her delight as she trotted along the beach was palpable. One of so many joyous memories to hold onto. Goodnight old friend.
