The Beginner Pet Gundog

Are you heading to CLA Gamefair this year?

If so come and Join L*z Graham and some of the accredited pet gundog instructors at the Working Dog Ring for a demonstration of the training approach that started the pet gundog ‘movement’ back in 2010 with the publication of her first book The Pet Gundog.

There are 22 accredited pet gundog Instructors based around the UK and, as well as seeing them in the demonstrations at 11.30am each day, you’ll find some instructors, along with L*z, at stand E1180 where you can find out more about the pet gundog’s common-sense approach to training, where to train, and be able chat to the instructors.

L*z will be taking questions and demonstrating the L*z Graham Retrieving Roll, an innovative piece of equipment designed to motivate and encourage an enthusiastic retrieve, at 2.30pm each day on stand E1180 located beside the Working Dog Ring.

Assessment Week is always a big thing at Home and Field. The spring intake course culminated this morning with some nervous smiles and some lovely handling. All dogs and handlers achieved The Pet Gundog Beginner grade. Great work from a great group who all played their part in keeping the fun levels high. Novice Group starts in September!

Some dogs just seem to make an impression on you and this is the case with Baxter. I always felt a little guilty as every week he would come out of the car immaculately clean and white only to return muddy and wet. Joan with the help of Andy and Tracey have done a great job with him gaining The Beginner Pet Gundog Certificate.

If you can’t get your message across then you’re not being understood

Learning how to communicate with our dogs is one of the greatest things we can do as dog owners.

Whether that's watching how they move around the home or how they react whilst on the training field, by observing their response to things we can learn their likes and dislikes as well as how to motivate them.

Just like us, our dogs all learn differently, and learning what turns them on and turns them off, means we can communicate clearly what we want them to do... and be more likely to get the response that we hoped for.

This programme is steeped in canine behaviour, training instructors to understand what makes the Pet Gundog tick, and how to develop the behaviours that we want in our dogs while training them in a way that honours their breeding and in a way that the dog understands.

Human psychology is explored as well as behavioural genetics, learning styles and micro-expressions: to teach others to train their dogs requires an understanding of the human psyche as well as dogs.
