The sun finally came out for Advanced Assessments which really puts the dogs through their paces. We’ve had lots of really good handling including the importance of energy and the subtleties of body language which has carried over into shoot days. I’ve had lots of fun teaching these guys. Upwards onto Working!

All smiles from the Assessment day for Beginners. This is the start of the dog that you would like to have. I always liken it to your 10m swimming certificate as it takes you from non-swimmer to at least getting out of the pool. Good times with a great group. The next Beginner Pet Gundog course starts on February 15th.

It’s always great to see owners trusting the process and reaping the rewards. It may not seem much but if you have a lead reactive dog you’ll know this scene all too well. Too many other dogs being ‘just friendly’ left this little chap thinking that his only option was to go forward first but with a little bit of leadership and an improvement in trust in each other he’s now happy to watch when this scenario would have definitely been a trigger to lunge forward. No cheese was harmed in this training. 🤣

Are you heading to CLA Gamefair this year?

If so come and Join L*z Graham and some of the accredited pet gundog instructors at the Working Dog Ring for a demonstration of the training approach that started the pet gundog ‘movement’ back in 2010 with the publication of her first book The Pet Gundog.

There are 22 accredited pet gundog Instructors based around the UK and, as well as seeing them in the demonstrations at 11.30am each day, you’ll find some instructors, along with L*z, at stand E1180 where you can find out more about the pet gundog’s common-sense approach to training, where to train, and be able chat to the instructors.

L*z will be taking questions and demonstrating the L*z Graham Retrieving Roll, an innovative piece of equipment designed to motivate and encourage an enthusiastic retrieve, at 2.30pm each day on stand E1180 located beside the Working Dog Ring.

Assessment Week is always a big thing at Home and Field. The spring intake course culminated this morning with some nervous smiles and some lovely handling. All dogs and handlers achieved The Pet Gundog Beginner grade. Great work from a great group who all played their part in keeping the fun levels high. Novice Group starts in September!
