💚"Green Practice of the Year 2025"💚

Earlier this month we received this incredible award from Anthony Chadwick and the whole team at The Webinar Vet.

Wylie’s received this award for their continuous outstanding dedication and commitment in reducing their climate impact within veterinary practice.

Our efforts were recognised by a panel of judges and our award was presented to us at the The Veterinary Green Discussion Forum 2025 (VGDF).

Here at Wylies we strive to educate and support our veterinary teams through positive change and encourage our veterinary professionals to play an active role in protecting our planet. 🌎

Involving our employees through training and increasing their awareness of the impact in which our profession can have on the planet and how we can all play an active part in reducing the climate impact, has been the most rewarding part of this journey for us.

Did you also know that Wylies are the only 24 hour independent hospital in Essex to have also received the highest accreditation Green Award from The Investors in the Environment (IIE).

❤️ Meet Martin ! ❤️

This gorgeous boy gave his family a bit of a fright a couple of weeks ago after managing to choke on some dry kibble whilst out in the garden.

Martin's worried owners bought him straight to us but had to stop on the way to help Martin breath. This incredible boy spent a bit of time with our wonderful team and after some oxygen and monitoring, went home the same night. ❤️

This very handsome boy is Baxter ❤, who recently came to see us after his owner noticed something wasn’t quite right with his foot.

After an examination under sedation, we found that a grass seed had worked its way deep into his foot and needed to be surgically removed.

Grass seeds may seem harmless, but their pointed, dart-like shape allows them to pierce the skin and burrow deeper, causing pain, infection, and sometimes even abscesses. They’re most commonly found in long grasses during the warmer months and can enter through paws, ears, eyes, or even noses.

❤ Common signs your pet may have a grass seed:

● Persistent licking or chewing at a paw
● Swelling, redness, or discharge
● A painful lump that appears suddenly
● Head shaking or pawing at the ear
● General signs of discomfort or irritation

If you spot any of these symptoms, it's important to get your pet checked as soon as
possible—grass seeds won’t work their way out on their own and can lead to serious
complications.

If you notice any of these symptoms, don’t delay—grass seeds don’t go away on their own and can cause more damage the longer they’re left untreated.

Baxter was a superstar during his treatment and is now on the mend! ❤❤❤ The photo of Baxter on the right, is him recovering at home with his lovely family and his little sister ❤

☀Heatstroke ☀

As we are set for the temperatures to continue to rise so does the risk of heatstroke in dogs which can happen a lot faster than many realise.

Heatstroke occurs when your dog cannot lose excessive heat, causing an increase in your dog's body temperature to a dangerous level.

☀ Signs of heatstroke include:☀

🐶Excessive panting or drooling, this can soon become more distressed or noisy breathing as heatstroke worsens
🐶 Increased heart rate
🐶Lethargy or collapse vomiting or diarrhoea
🐶Bright red gums or tongue
🐶 Seizures

If you think your dog may be suffering from heatstroke it is vital that you contact us as soon as possible and begin actively cooling your dog down.

☀Move your dog out of the sun and into a shaded area
☀Use cool water to pour over their body, avoid their nose and face so that they dont inhale the water, but ensure the water reaches under their fur to their skin.
☀ Use a fan on them or take them to an air conditioned area
☀ Offer them water to drink but, dont force them

Be aware, there are some animals that are more at risk from heatstroke than others these include

🐶Overweight pets
🐶Pets with long, thick coats
🐶Flat faced breeds such as pugs/french bulldogs
🐶Pets with pre existing heart and lung diseases
🐶Very elderly pets

☀Below are a few ways in which you can aim to prevent heatstroke☀

☀Ensure they have a constant supply of fresh water to drink
☀Ensure their coats are kept short or well groomed
☀Use cooling mats in the house and pull blinds or curtains so the dogs are not sitting in direct sunlight.
☀Walk them first thing in the morning or last thing at night when the temperatures have dropped or not at all
☀Use fans or air con units at home
☀Get a doggy paddling pool for the garden ( always Supervised though)
☀Ensure there is lots of shade in the garden and never leave them unattended.

Of course, as always should you need us our team at our Upminster hospital are here 24 hours a day 01708 251200

Look at this stunning little man ❤

Mitchell is a very handsome Ragamuffin, who first visited us as a kitten. Just look at him now! He is all grown up and looking as gorgeous as ever!

We were lucky enough to get some cuddles from Mitchell when he visited us recently, I think from how well he posed on the table in the consulting room he is very used to lots of cuddles, fuss and of course photos!❤🥰

☀️🐰 Help Keep Your Rabbits Cool This Summer! 🐰☀️

With temperatures rising, it's important to make sure your bunnies stay safe and comfortable in the heat. Rabbits can struggle in hot weather, they find it much more difficult to keep cool than keep warm !

Here are a few things that may help your rabbit manage the heat

☀️ Ensure they are in the shade – Make sure their enclosure and run are out of direct sunlight. A parasol or garden umbrella can help too!

🐰 Keep it breezy – Create airflow with a fan nearby (not blowing directly on them). Using a fan will cool the air down around them. A plastic bottle frozen and wrapped in a towel can provide an a cool area to lay against.

☀️ Stay hydrated – Check their water bowls and bottles regularly and refill with fresh, cool water throughout the day. Rabbits much prefer a water bowl, as they often drink as much as a small dog and will find it difficult to get this amount of water from a drinking bottle.

🐰 Cool snacks – Offer leafy greens that have been kept in the fridge or rinsed in cold water for a refreshing treat.

☀️ Groom regularly – Brushing out loose fur helps them feel more comfortable and helps them regulate their temperature more easily. Check around their bottom area at least twice daily to make sure they are clean from any urine or faeces.

If you have any concerns about your rabbit please contact our team on 01708 251200

Not all superheroes' wear capes ! ❤🐾

On 18th May ,our Upminster hospital hosted the Pet Blood Bank. The pet blood bank is a charity that exists to help save the lives of pets in need. A total of 12 dogs attended this session, one of which was the very gorgeous Apollo !. This is Apollo's second time donating blood and he still loves coming to see us. I'm not sure if its us or the fact that he is allowed to pick a new toy for being such a superstar ❤

We will be hosting the Pet Blood Bank again in the very near future. If you would like to find out more information, pop onto their website below
