Manners are so important for every dog to have, they just make life easy.
All my dogs and are taught to wait till told to eat, this has huge benefits all round and allows feeding time to be calm and collected.
The spaniel on the far end, who eats first, isn't mine. She's just here to stay for a while, she's doing really well as she's an only dog at home so it's a big change for her to eat within a pack. It hasn't taken her long to learn the feeding time routine though.

Congratulations to these three handlers and dogs for passing the, Beginner Pet Gundog Assessment. There were a few breath holding moments but they did it!!
Well done..... Onwards and upwards to the novice!!!

This morning has mainly consisted of playing, whining, cleaning, oh and a little bit of training.
Teaching the pup how to sit, whilst teaching Timber some steadyness.
I wouldn't normally train a pup this young with an older dog anywhere near but this morning pup wasn't in a playing mood and we quit after 3 attempts to ensure we didn't overdo it and ended on a good note.

Today has been another full on Saturday. Four 1-2-1s, and the 2nd beginner pet gundog class.
All the dogs and handlers did really well, we chose to increase distance on some exercises and upped the distractions on others.
Today also reminded me why I do what I do and made me fall back in love with training after seeing what these dogs can achieve when handled well.

Sorry for lack of updates... Its been a busy few weeks!! Back to it now after the Christmas break. 5 1-2-1s done today, all clients did really well and still arrived for their lessons even with the weather being horrible.
This is Gunner.... He's a 5 month old black lab who has been practising his recall away from distractions.

Today has been a busy day for training...... I've had four 1-2-1s and the Pet Gundog beginners group. I am so proud of all the dogs and handlers today, they've all made amazing progress. From sit / stays and recalls to some amazing retrieving and steadyness.

We've had Bryah to stay here at castle quay. We've been working on some manners and obedience. Here she is bossing the "not you" command. I love this command and it really is one of my favourites to teach, it makes life so easy, especially when you don't want 4 dogs following you!!

The last couple of weeks have been pretty busy with 1-2-1s and the beginner class. We've covered lots in all the classes and the dogs are really starting to progress now. Today I did a 1-2-1 with a 1 year old cocker who over the last couple of weeks has exceeded expectations and has really shown how clever and how much a dog can learn, as we introduced him to directions. I forgot to take pictures so will try harder next week, so for now here's a picture of one of my crazies

The 1-2-1s were rescheduled today due to the weather forecast saying it was going to be heavy rain all day.
So I made the most of the dry spell and went out for an hour or two with my gang.
I haven't done a lot with my own recently and it was great to get them out on the field. Rolo is having a little time off as he had a grass seed removed from his paw so is having some recovery time.

An important part of my training with my dogs is teaching them to do nothing. This may sound strange but it pays off when you want to stop for a chat or a drink. We went away this weekend and took all four dogs, they all sat beautifully in all the pubs we went in and when watching the red kites.
Teaching them to do nothing is all part of The Pet Gundog training and really is worth it

Last but not least...... Timber.... The collie who I didn't want!!! He's 5 months old and considering I didn't want him he's turning into a lovely little lad who I adore. He's a quick learner and I'm slowly convincing my partner he can be part of the gundog team!!

Indie........... The dog who got me through all of The Pet Gundog training and assessments. This little dog is an absolute gem, she's been a dream to train and I love taking her out anywhere to walk or train. She's 2 years old and puts her heart and soul into trying to do everything right to please me. I think she's quickly becoming my dog of a lifetime

The next team member is Jess...... 6 year old English springer spaniel. I rehomed Jess when she was about 3 years old. She is the friendliest, most loving dog who craves attention all the time. She's the perfect house dog, apart from when it come to her bed, with which she will destroy any bed within seconds if she feels like it, never chews anything apart from her bed!!! So if anyones got any good strong bed suggestions fire away!!!

I hope everyone has enjoyed the Bank holiday weekend. Over the next couple of days I'll introduce the Castle Quay team...... Starting this evening with Rolo, my 8 year old working cocker Spaniel. He's possibly the most character full dog I've owned and tested my patience and will..... But we've made it through and taught each other many life lessons along the way.

I thought I had better do a post to introduce me and what Castle Quay is all about........ I'm Katy and have been interested in training Gundogs for about 12 years, I've always had a passion for dogs and after working in a kennels helping train gundogs my passion grew and lead me onto The Pet Gundog training course, being tutored and taught by L*z Graham, after 18 months I have just become an accredited instructor and now would like to share my training and show you what can be achieved with your pet!
