November 5th is fast approaching, and no doubt there are fireworks about already in many places. Anxiety about fireworks and bonfires is an increasing concern for our pets, but there are lots of things we can do to help, even at a late stage. Written by a friend - as long as it’s fresh, pumpkin is good! 🎃

It's barely October but thoughts have already turned to Halloween and pumpkins. There are lots of posts about the benefits of pumpkin for dogs... but what's the science?
Pumpkin for diarrhoea - canned pumpkin has apparently been an upset stomach staple for American pets. It is true that pumpkin contains soluble and insoluble fibre which can support a healthy gut flora and regulate faecal consistency. Canned pumpkin may have additional ingredients making it less suitable that fresh. Cook the pumpkin and add to your dog's meals in small amounts until you get a perfect p**p!
Pumpkin seed wormer - we hear this a lot, and while there is a grain of truth we can't recommend this over conventional worming products. Extracts of pumpkin seed, particularly an ethanol extract, were active against one mouse worm in a study. It is hard to extrapolate how these extracts compare to feeding crushed pumpkin seeds, and may not be useful against any or all dog worms. We are sure more research will be done, until them we recommend drying and seasoning the seeds for a tasty human snack!
(I don't usually do links but here is the pumpkin seeds study https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5037735/ )

Meet the very beautiful Belle. I first met Belle last August, to see if we could use any herbal therapy to help with her anxiety around new people and places. At the time she was too terrified to examine properly but it became clear that part of her problems were due to pain in her lower back, linked to a developmental abnormality with her tail. Earning Belle’s trust has been challenging, but after four sessions of acupuncture she’s able to lift and wag her tail again, and allows cuddles, and treatment with minimal restraint. Belle is a lovely example of how patience can pay off in a nervous dog.

The beautiful dandelion

The beautiful dandelion

Here are some interesting facts about the dandelion flower:

The dandelion is the only flower that represents the 3 celestial bodies of the sun, moon and stars. ☀️🌙 ⭐️. The yellow flower resembles the sun, the puff ball resembles the moon and the dispersing seeds resemble the stars.

The dandelion flower opens to greet the morning and closes in the evening to go to sleep. 😴

Every part of the dandelion is useful: root, leaves, flower. It can be used for food, medicine and dye for coloring.

Up until the 1800s people would pull grass out of their lawns to make room for dandelions and other useful “weeds” like chickweed, malva, and chamomile.

The name dandelion is taken from the French word “dent de lion” meaning lion’s tooth, referring to the coarsely-toothed leaves. 🦁

Dandelions have one of the longest flowering seasons of any plant.

Dandelion seeds are often transported away by a gust of wind and they travel like tiny parachutes. Seeds are often carried as many as 5 miles from their origin!

Animals such as birds, insects and butterflies consume nectar or seed of dandelion.🐦 🐛 🐜 🦋 🐝.

Dandelion flowers do not need to be pollinated to form seed.

Every part of the dandelion is useful: root, leaves, flower. It can be used for food, medicine and dye for coloring.

Dandelion can be used in the production of wine and root beer. Root of dandelion can be used as a substitute for coffee. 🍷 🍺

Dandelions have sunk their roots deep into history. They were well known to ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, and have been used in Chinese traditional medicine for over a thousand years.

Dandelion is used in folk medicine to treat infections and liver disorders. Tea made of dandelion act as diuretic.

If you mow dandelions, they’ll grow shorter stalks to spite you.

Dandelions are, quite possibly, the most successful plants that exist, masters of survival worldwide. 💪

A not so fun fact: Every year countries spend millions on lawn pesticides to have uniform lawns of non-native grasses, and we use 30% of the country’s water supply to keep them green.

Now at 6 months old we’ve made him a herbal formula combining herbs to support his immune system, reduce inflammation and help him clear mucus from his chest. He’s doing great so far! ❤️🐾🌱
