Why Dogs Love to Sniff on Walks!

Did you know that when your furry friend stops to smell the roses (or anything else), it’s actually beneficial for them?

I remind myself that Phoebe comes with me to places that she potentially would rather not. Therefore on our walks I let her stop and sniff as much as she likes (and she sniffs a lot) as she loves it so much! Even if I am in a rush I don't hurry her along (it's not her fault I am late) and I want her to enjoy her walk and relax.

Here’s why:

MENTAL EXERCISE: Dogs are social and intelligent creatures. Sniffing activates their brains, providing mental stimulation. It’s like their version of scrolling through social media!

SCENT DECTECTIVES: With up to 300 million scent receptors (compared to our measly 6 million), dogs gather loads of information from smells. It’s enriching for them to explore the world through their noses.

CALMING EFFECT: Sniffing releases dopamine, the mood-boosting chemical. Think of it as a doggy yoga session! So, slow down your walk and let your pup indulge in some serious sniffing.

Remember, every sniff is a little adventure for your furry companion so don't hurry them along and let them read the doggy newspaper 😃🐕‍🦺🗞

UK Summer has arrived! It's difficult if your holiday accommodation doesn't allow your dog to be left unattended. If your staying in a caravan its also difficult as it will be too hot to leave them inside unattended. So what can you do in these situations? Here's a few tips that we use when holidaying in warmer climates.

This photo was taken In June 2018, Bella & Phoebe enjoying the Plage du Pavillon Royal ️ Ilbarritz, France. Our dogs are brachycephalic dogs (flat faced) so we have to be extra cautious with the heat as it can affect their breathing.

Tips:
🌞If your going to the beach you need to provide them with shade, we use an umbrella or a open beach tent

🌞Take plenty of fresh water with you and try to keep it cool and out of the sun and of course a bowl for them to drink from.

🌞Dig up the dry sand to expose the damp sand and then get your dog to lie on it. This will help cool them.

🌞Keep them damp. We do this either by getting them to swim or have a paddle when at the beach. If we are out walking we use the water fountains or a bottle of water to wet them over, do this gently you don't want to shock them. We also stick to walking on the shaded side of the street out of the direct sunlight. The path will be cooler for their paws too.

🌞We use dog friendly sunscreen!! Yep you heard it. Place it on any areas where their fur is thin e.g. ears, belly, paws and nose.

🌞 Limit exercise to either early morning or late at night when it's cooler and don't forget to carry out the hand to pavement rule, this also applies to the sand. If you can't stand on it bare foot than neither should your dog. Carry them to the damp sand or the shore line where it is cooler for lots of beach fun!!

🌞Alternatively walk them in a wooded area where there is plenty of shade and a stream for them to splash around in.

🌞Don't go to the beach day everyday. Allow your dog to have a break out of the sun altogether, perhaps go for a walk in woodland where there is lots of shade.

These tips work for our short haired dogs but always go by the advice of your vet.
