Why you'll never find a mirror sold in our shop ⬇️🙌

🚫 Toys to avoid 🚫

We often get asked why we don't stock any mirrors on our birdie toy wall! There is a very simple reason for this - mirrors are psychologically bad for your bird.

Birds, although very intelligent, do not recognise their own reflection! This gives the bird an incorrect perception of reality, they are not talking to another bird and therefore do not get the same interaction, reflections only mimic them.

Having a mirror inside your birds cage can cause a surge in hormonal behaviours, which in turn can cause issues such as;
🐦 Territorial behaviour
🐦 Biting/aggression
🐦Depression/frustration from lack of interaction from a possible mate
🐦Stress/obsession
🐦Attacking mirror (mirrors are breakable and can cause injury)

'But my budgie is fine and likes his mirror' - Unfortunately this is a common misconception, it is very likely that the mirror is causing psychological harm. Without a full understanding of bird behaviour, it may not seem that way to us humans.

There is a huge range of healthier toy options you can choose for your bird instead, including (but not limited to) foraging toys, shredding toys and clanger toys!

This is our first instalment of 'Toys to Avoid', follow us for more 'Toys to Avoid' posts in future!🚫

🐦🦜Bluey 🦜🐦

The handsome Bluey is now looking for his forever home! This gorgeous Kakariki was sadly rehomed after his cage-mate was exhibiting hormonal behaviour, leaving them simply unhappy together in the cage offered. He is untamed, but kakarikis are so inquisitive and food oriented, they can be tamed and trained well with some persistence.

🪽 Birds are meant to fly 🪽

🪽 Birds are meant to fly 🪽

We really don't understand how this is a controversial topic in this day and age. Parrots are built to fly. There shouldn't even be an argument about this topic, yet here we are. Let's go through a few reasons why people clip wings and debunk them.

"It keeps them safe".
Does it though? A clipped parrot can often still glide meaning it can still escape outdoors. The only difference is a clipped parrot WILL get caught by predators because it has a weak flight pattern. Clipped parrots cannot manoeuvre away from danger and are easy prey so survival if they escape is minimal. Swap wing clipping for closing doors, bug screens and general precautions when it comes to safety.

"They can still fly! Just not as far!"
This goes back to the safety aspect. If they get outdoors they are dinner. Also, if a clipped bird can still fly why clip them in the first place? Clipped parrots need to use their wings in a slightly different manner to those who aren't clipped since they don't have the same level of control. This leads to muscle atrophy or muscle growth in the wrong areas. Many clipped birds also have keel injuries as they cannot land properly and smack into the floor.

"It will help me tame them".
Theres a post about this coming later this week explaining how this DOESN'T work and why people think it does.

💯👏⬇️ This is one of the things we do not like to hear you say when coming to view our birds 🙈 It is no reason to get a bird just because they have the potential to learn to talk!
It is a HUGE lifestyle change sharing your home with a bird and it shouldn't be an easy or fast decision! We will always guide you the best we can to ensure its the right choice! 🦜❤️

We see it very often that people want a parrot simply because they mimic speech. Please, if you are interested in welcoming a parrot into your home do your research! Even reach out to us! We will be more than happy to help explain how difficult these beautiful creatures can be and offer advice about keeping them in your home.
