Do you prefer Hetty with a long or short mane?
Let me know 💭
I get asked this question ALL the time
When owners see me tie up horses, I'm always asked why I tie them high...full explanation below 👇
Trying to prep for the week...🤣🐈
Early Sunday mornings at AY Horsemanship 😍
Spooky corner? It’s not just you…👻
Loads of horses come into the arena and take a dislike to one of the corners 🐎
We’re taught to ride the horse forward and force them past the “scary object” to take their attention away from it and pretend it’s not there 👀
But by doing this you’re adding more pressure into a situation where your horse is already feeling overwhelmed 🤯
Try this instead ⬇️👌
Pick up trot. Work the horse in the part of the arena that’s NOT scary 🔆 then head towards THAT spooky corner ⛔️, as you head towards the spooky corner, stop asking the horse to do anything, turn OFF your riding and make it a place of rest, almost think DOWNWARD transition.
As the horse moves away from the spooky corner pick up your riding again and ask more of them, once again as you approach the spooky corner TURN OFF your riding.
Slowly but surely your horse will realise the spooky corner is a place of rest, if they seek walk or even a halt in the spooky corner, let them.
By turning OFF your riding you have shown them that you’ve:
Listened to them 😍
Reacted to their needs 😍
Helped them overcome a fear 😍
Released the pressure 😍

I've always loved pausing for a moment and listening to the horses tuck into their morning feeds 🤠
Oro is back!
This lovely chap was with me for pre-starting last April, he's now back for starting and so far so good!
Another one reminding me why the pre-starting phase is so important
1) Using a flag helps me to develop a consistent pattern of movement with a horse
2) It can also safely expose the horse to touch while moving
3) It's a great tool to use for clear and precise movement commands
🤠
More from Neville
This was the first time I'd tried sitting above him and as you can see - he doesn't have a care in the world!
He's chilled out because I've spent time on the basics. Never underestimate how important it is to build the foundations people

Teaching Zoe and Peaches while riding Hetty!
It's good practice for both young mares to have something else going on in the arena while they're working - neither was bothered - so proud of how they coped.
Both have spent time with me for pre-starting previously so it's good to see my training processes paying off 😄🤠
Come ride 4-year-old Hetty with me 🤠
Her first time being ridden outside of the round pen - she did so well!
Young mare Peaches
Life according to Peaches 🍑
Such a cool mare, Zoe brought Peaches back for a lesson the other day, she hasn't forgotten anything and wasn't remotely phased by the sheet 🤣🤣
Marvin!
Two months of Marvin 🤠
This little guy has come such a long way in just two months. From not letting me near him to having the confidence and trust in me to walk over the rustly sheet! He's gone back home to absorb everything he's learned, we'll miss having him in the yard 🐴
A month ago this boy wasn't happy with anyone being near him - now look at him!
First time with a cinch and saddle pad on for Marvin. I've taken things really slowly with this little guy and it's definitely paying off 🤠
Tomorrow is halter day!
I will be completing all existing halter orders, if you would like to add an order please message AY Horsemanship before 10am tomorrow (Thursday 7th)
All halters are bespoke, I’ll need your horses measurements. I can send you a video showing how to take the correct measurements, it’s easy to follow.
