❀️ The legacy of our inspirational Registered Veterinary Nurse Laura Turnbull is to enable nurses of the future to follow their dreams, just as Laura did. As we approach the second anniversary of her passing, we reflect on her incredible achievements and love for our profession.

Laura died in January 2023 aged just 35, eight years after a cancer diagnosis. She packed so much into her life and career that an annual bursary has now been set up to honour her memory, organised in partnership with Laura’s mum, Hilary, and sister Sophie.

🐾🐱 Meet Dexter, the miracle cat who’s truly one of our most unforgettable cases of 2024.

This brave feline was lucky to survive after being shot in the face with a shotgun. While the details of how it happened are unknown, Dexter needed complex surgery to save his life. Our skilled team performed an intricate procedure to rebuild his jaw and mouth after the devastating injury.

Now, thanks to the care he received, Dexter is back at home, living his best life with his grateful owner.

🌎 History-makers! 🌎

Our Head of Cardiology, Chris Linney and Fabio Sarcinella, Head of Cardiology at Willows Veterinary Centre and Referral Service, have performed the first-ever interventional cardiology procedures on pets in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The duo successfully operated on four dogs suffering from pulmonic stenosis after being invited to the region by the British Veterinary Centre, which is based in Abu Dhabi.

πŸ—£οΈ Chris said: β€œAs the heads of cardiology at two of the busiest interventional cardiology centres in the UK and Europe, Fabio and I doubled up to improve the lives of these four patients.

β€œIt was a pioneering moment for the British Veterinary Centre and a first for the region and the Middle East.

β€œIt was also the first time that Fabio and I had worked together and now we hope that this will be the first of many such collaborations.”

πŸŽ„β€οΈ Throughout this festive month, we're revisiting some of the most heart-warming cases we've treated in 2024.

This is little Lola, a tiny puppy who is thought to be one of the smallest ever patients to successfully undergo minimally-invasive heart surgery. Lola, a miniature Dachshund, was just 10 weeks old and weighed less than two bags of sugar when she was rushed for emergency care while suffering from heart failure.

Lola’s symptoms disappeared after the operation, and she was discharged the next day. The joy on her owner Hayley Forrest's face was priceless as she welcomed Lola back home.

Kobi is diabetic and his vision deteriorated so quickly he was forced to have an eye removed. However, thanks to the swift actions of our Head of Ophthalmology, James Rushton, we were able to save the sight in his other eye.

Kobi is now enjoying life back home with his owner Nic Griffiths, in Castleford.
