❤️ Did You Know? Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) is the second most common heart disease in dogs!

🐕💔 DCM affects the heart muscle, leading to dilation and weakening of the heart chambers. It’s most common in medium to large breeds and giant dogs, with symptoms typically appearing between 4-10 years of age. Male dogs are more often affected. Some spaniels are also at risk.

🐈 Cats on vegetarian diets can also be affected due to low taurine levels, an essential amino acid found in meat.

What is entropion? 👁

Entropion is the medical term for an inverted eyelid, such that the outer skin is in contact with the surface of the eye.

They can be a condition pets are born with or secondary to other eye conditions.

A few breeds are more likely to suffer from entropion including Chow Chow, Shar Pei, Bouvier des Flanders, Rottweiler, German Pointer, Labrador and Golden Retriever.

Most dogs affected by entropion require surgery. The type of surgery will be tailored to your dog’s needs, there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution.

If left untreated, entropion can cause severe and permanent damage to the surface of the eye, resulting in poor vision or in the worst case, loss of the eye.

What is a heart murmur? 🤔

A murmur is a “whooshing sound” heard with each heartbeat via a stethoscope across the chest wall. This sound is a sign of turbulence in blood flow as it moves through the heart.

This turbulence in blood flow can be due to various structural heart defects including:

🔴 Leaking valves
🔴 Heart enlargement
🔴 Narrowed heart valves
🔴 “Hole in heart”, also known as Ventral Septal Defect (VSD)
🔴 Innocent/ physiological murmurs

Whilst some murmurs are associated with minor heart disease, others are more significant as the heart tries to compensate by changing its size and shape by process of remodelling. Over time, these compensatory mechanisms might fail and heart failure could ensue.

Meet Paula, who has been with us for six years and recently qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN)! 👋

We asked Paula to share what a typical day might look like for her as an ophthalmology-specific nurse:

She said: "I start the day with surgical nurse rounds to see what surgeries are happening in the hospital that day. Then I lead the ophthalmology rounds to discuss inpatients, surgeries and potential procedures to decide where I am needed for that day.

"I will then go to check the inpatients with the ophthalmology intern vet, checking eye pressures and surgical sites to ensure they are healing well. I may also go into theatre to assist with various surgeries or be involved in handling patients during consults.

"I am currently learning how to complete ERGs (electroretinogram) and cross-linking procedures to free up time for our vet team. I also have a day in the week when I check stock orders for ophthalmology consumables."

Outside of work, Paula enjoys running and is a member of two running clubs! 💨

She also enjoys crafting, going to gigs and festivals, amateur photography and travelling with her husband to as many places in the world as possible!

In celebration of International Cat Day, we’re thrilled to announce that we’ve been re-accredited as a Gold Cat-Friendly Clinic! 🥇🐱

This is a scheme developed by the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM) to encourage best practices in caring for cats!

We meet strict criteria set out by the ISFM to achieve the accreditation, including appointing a cat advocate, offering a separate cat waiting area, installing feline-friendly cages and veterinary equipment specifically for treating cats. Our team also need to demonstrate they are trained in caring for cats sensitively and respectfully in order to minimise stress.

Our cat advocate and Registered Veterinary Nurse Chelsea O'Donnell said:

“Cats are sensitive animals and offering them a stress-free environment is really important. This is something we care deeply about at Paragon and that has been a priority here since the day we opened.""

📝 Congratulations to Paula Hirst, our Ophthalmology Registered Veterinary Nurse, who has had her clinical paper published!

Entitled 'A journey through a cat friendly clinic', the article is based around life working in an ISFM gold standard cat friendly hospital and walks you through the day from start to finish.

🗣️ Paula said: "I’ve always wanted to write a published article, even before I qualified, as I have a keen interest in cat behaviour and welfare, and I am also a member of the cat friendly team in my hospital. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity and really enjoyed doing this."

👋

Say hello to Lisa Dwyer, one of our amazing Patient Care Assistants!

Lisa has been with us for just over two years and tells us what she enjoys most about her role...

🗣️ "I'm front of house, so I get to meet some of the patients before they go for their consultations. I love to go and have a fuss and meet them before they go in and have a chat with the owners to try to reassure them, as it's generally a worrying time for them.

"My role is based in the dispensary, so it's my job to put up medications. Once they've been checked and signed by a vet or nurse, I take them to our inpatients or contact clients to let them know their medication is ready. I also get to work alongside the ophthalmologists and sometimes hold the animals while they have their eyes examined, which I enjoy doing.

"I started at Paragon on the Client Care team and then decided to apply for a PCA role. I was nervous about doing so, as I've mainly come from a recruitment background, so I put myself out of my comfort zone. I always feel supported by my colleagues if ever I'm stuck with anything."

🐕 Meet Jessie, a beloved Cocker Spaniel whose lameness has been treated by a successful and highly complex spinal operation here at Paragon.

It was such a success that Jessie's owner, Rebecca, said Michał Mól, our Neurology clinician, was a lifesaver!

Severe spinal cord compression was found to be the cause of Jessie's acute discomfort and lameness, and she was in such pain we had difficulty examining her.

Under Michał's care, Jessie now enjoys full movement again and is living her best life...💙

👋

Today, we are proud to introduce you to Emillia Hall, our Orthopedic-specific Registered Veterinary Nurse.

Emilia's role is not just a job for her; it's a passion. She finds joy in surgeries and in building relationships with our clients and their beloved pets. Her key responsibilities involve collaborating with our two orthopaedic surgeons and residents.

Emilia aids the patient's journey from consult to imaging to surgery and then discharge. She also gets the opportunity to scrub into surgery and assist the surgeons during procedures.

Emilia's journey with us began in October 2019 as part of the surgical nursing team. Her dedication and love for everything orthopaedic led her to progress into her new role in January this year, a journey we are all proud to have witnessed.

When she's not at work, Emilia fills her time with a variety of activities. She enjoys horse riding, taking long walks, going on holidays, and, most importantly, spending quality time with her French Bulldog, Jack Russell, and a little rescue cat named Spud.

Thank you for all you do, Emilia!
