HOW TO HELP YOUR DOG WITH FIREWORKS
1) Create a safe den - This is somewhere the dog can retreat to to feel safe and secure.Cover a crate or build a hiding place with comfy blankets and bedding and it's better to select a place they usually like to rest to do this. Our dog trainer says: dogs like to be covered so having a blanket or sheet over this area to make it den-like is a good idea. You can include an old T-shirt of yours or have their favourite toys nearby.
2)Provide pets with pheromone support - These can help to bring some calming support for your pet, these can be placed in the room they will spend most of their time. Pop into practice for our Calmex bundle.
3) Walk them during daylight hours - if they are at risk of running away keep them on the lead incase there are some stray fireworks going off in the daytime.
4) Stay calm and donβt react to the fireworks yourself - Treat the evening as though nothing is different than a normal evening. This will show your dog that there is nothing to be frightened of.
5) Ensure all windows and doors are shut, and close the curtains - make sure your pet cannot escape if they get scared.
6) Turn on the TV or play music to muffle the sound of the fireworks and relax your pet - Classic FM are playing a relaxing music playlist between 5pm and 9pm
7) Consider distracting your dog from the fireworks by giving them a chew, toy or playing a game with them, if they prefer to hide then leave them to settle on their own and give reassurance when required.
8) NEVER punish your dog for displaying unwanted behaviour as a result of fireworks going off - this will only make them more distressed.
