With the warmer weather ahead, owners should be mindful of the signs of heatstroke. 🌡️ Heatstroke is a serious illness that develops when a dog gets too hot and is unable to lower its temperature. Left untreated, heatstroke can lead to seizures, organ failure and even death.

Any dog can develop heatstroke, but overweight, young, elderly, flat-faced, giant-breed, and thick-coated dogs are particularly at risk, even from just sitting out in hot weather.

Some of the most common triggers for heatstroke include:
🥵 Overheating during exercise - accounts for 74% of cases
☀️ Being outside in hot weather (even just sitting still) - accounts for 12.9% of cases
🚘♨️ Being trapped in a hot car - accounts for 5.2% of cases

🧊 Please note that ice cubes are perfectly safe for dogs to use as a treat to cool down on a hot day. It is when a dog is suffering from heatstroke that the drastic change in temperature from the ice can cause shock, and therefore should be avoided. A dog’s normal body temperature is around 38.6°C (101.5°F).

We knew this would happen.........🥲🥲🥲

Birmingham Dogs Home’s kennels are currently at full capacity as we receive record number of dogs being handed in every day.

Between February and June 2022, we received over 80 dogs every month which is more than double the number we received in the same months in 2021. We have capacity for over 120 dogs in Solihull and 90 more in our Wolverhampton centre and every kennel is full. Our canine carers are working hard to help every dog and to find new homes for them as quickly as possible, but we are stretched to our limits”.

We are appealing to local dog lovers to consider offering a second chance of happiness to these dogs who find themselves homeless through no fault of their own.

This is our 130th birthday year and as we are marking this significant milestone of 130 years of caring, since we were founded in 1892, the current situation shows how vital the work of our charity still is today. We will continue to support the Midlands community and be here for every dog that needs us for many years to come.

Here are some tips to look after your fur babies during this warm weather 🐾:

1: Make sure you have constant cool water for them to access

2: Put a damp towel down for them to lie on or a paddling pool for them to splash around in

3: Open the windows indoors to circulate cool air through the house

4: Put your hand on the pavement- if it is too hot for your hand, then it is too hot for your dogs paws

5: Ensure there is a shaded area availible for your dog to lie in

6: Give your dogs sometime cool to play with- a bottle filled with water or their toy in the freezer

7: Time their wake and take them for walks early morning or later in evening

8: You can buy cooling mats and vests to help them cool down

9: NEVER leave your dog alone closed in a hot room or car!

As Spring starts, we are getting more and more phone calls about red bites on your dogs stomach. We wanted to give everyone this information, these are a type of fly bite, and dogs generally get them from laying in the grass. They look terrible, but usually do not bother the dogs. They heal quickly on their own, and do not require any treatment. These flies are usually around for a few weeks every spring and then go away. We hope this eases any worry that you may have had about your own dog!

⚠️ WARNING ⚠️

To all dog owners - Vets are putting out advice as there is a bad virus spreading really fast and they’re seeing an advanced amount of admissions.

Try to stay away from parks, don’t let your dog drink outside water, puddles etc. and not to sniff 💩. Clean your dogs paws after every walk in case they’ve walked in the virus then catch it when cleaning themselves 🥺

"Vets are reporting higher than usual occurrenced of gastroenteritis in dogs which is fitting with a wider phenomenon as reported by The Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network (SAVSNET). So far we have found that the cases seen- whilst clearly being poorly- have responded well to treatment.
The British Veterinary Association (BVA) advise that with prompt veterinary treatment almost all dogs make a full recovery from this uncommonly violent gastric bug."

How Is This Vomiting Bug Different?
According to Vet Dr Danielle Greenberg of SAVSNET, this vomiting bug is unusual due to:
➡️ Prolific vomiting of 5 or more episodes in a 12 hour period which can stop for a period (such as overnight) and then starts again
➡️ Dogs are often unable to keep water down at peak vomiting stage
➡️ Anorexia and lethargy for 2-5 days
➡️ Diarrhoea: Most dogs have ‘gravy-like’ diarrhoea
➡️Full recovery can take 5-10 days

What We Know So Far:
➡️ This outbreak is affecting areas across the Midlands, Wales, the North of England and Northern Ireland
➡️ The illness is most likely a virus but has not yet been identified.
➡️ Seems to be dog-specific, thankfully humans don’t appear to be at risk.
➡️ This is not caused by Parvo or Salmonella.
