WELCOME!

This is our new RVN Rachael during her cat clinic nursing consults this morning giving beautiful Ghost a cuddle. Rachael joined us at the beginning of March (with the expansion of our premises, we’ve been expanding our team too!) and takes our qualified nursing team to a new total of 12. Rachael started her nursing journey in 2012, and on qualifying as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in 2017, moved to the Midlands where she has been working in small animal first opinion practice since. In addition to her nursing duties and being sole charge nurse at branch surgery level, Rachael helped inspire vet team members of the future in previous posts, as a student nurse clinical coach and work experience coordinator. Whilst she loves all elements of her role, she has a particular passion for feline nursing, recently completing an ISFM Certificate in Feline Nursing with distinction and helping her previous practice become a silver-accredited Cat Friendly Clinic. We’re delighted to welcome Rachael to the team and know she will love meeting you and your feline friends!

COMFY COLLAR

Our RVN Rachael’s beautiful cat Moomin was in with us yesterday for a hernia repair. Moomin is now recovering well at home and is being brilliantly looked after by her mum on her day off! Did you know that we offer comfy soft fabric cat collars at the West Midlands Cat Clinic for cats prone to bothering with wounds or stitches post-surgery? Cats generally tolerate the fabric collars really well and they give owners peace of mind that the wound is not being worried at by the patient. Moomin brought her own collar in – and it’s a bumble bee! We love this! Get well soon Moomin!

P***Y CAT PIONEER!

This is beautiful Buttons who is a West Midlands Cat Clinic pioneer! The two year old came to see us in January with blood and mucus in her poo, lethargy and a lack of interest in her food. She was also losing weight. Despite running various lab profiles to try and determinate the cause of Buttons’ condition, there were no significant indicators to identify a specific problem. Poor Buttons’ diarrhoea could be so explosive that she’d have little warning, and with her continued poor appetite and lack of vitality, her owner feared she might lose her.

Our vet Emma wondered whether Buttons’ condition could be related to poor general gut health and a lack of presence of the good flora and bacteria needed for a healthy gut. She had learned about a procedure called faecal transplantation at a veterinary congress last year, where healthy (lab-approved) cat faeces are transplanted into a patient under sedation to redress gut microbiome imbalance. Buttons’ owner agreed and Buttons came in for two treatments three weeks apart in February. Emma performed the procedures – the first time it’s been carried out here on a feline patient. You can see the kit involved in the photo.

The picture of Buttons was taken this morning – just 3 weeks on from her last treatment – looking a little alert here as she was wondering why three of us were cooing over her in her check-up appointment! Her owner noted that immediately after her last procedure, Buttons’ poo was back to normal colour and the mucus had gone. And that now she’s back to her normal self, grooming, playing and going outside and is happily eating again and has put 300g. All brilliant news! Given that Buttons is doing so well, she’s now starting to ween off her special diet, but will continue with supplements to keep promoting happy guts. What a superstar and what an amazing recovery in such a short time. We hope Buttons’ story will be an inspiration to others. Her case shows just how critical good gut bacteria is to good health.

RVN TEAM CONTINUES TO GROW

We were delighted to welcome Amy Starr to the 387 and West Midlands Cat Clinic team this February. Graduating in 2021, Amy has worked in a variety of fast-paced vet clinic environments, managing per-operative care as well as carrying out theatre nurse duties and running nurse clinics. With a passion for animal welfare, Amy moved to the PDSA in 2022, first as a full time locum and latterly as a permanent employee, relishing the challenge of innovation and flexibility required to problem-solve and embracing the charity’s emphasis on clear client education and communication around pet welfare.

Fully involved across our nursing duty portfolio already, look out for Amy in nurse clinic consults. And with a particular love of in-patient care, if Amy is rostered on cat ward and your cat is due in for a procedure, Amy will be in her element looking after your feline friend!

COOL KITTEN!

Emma was totally in love this morning when Sphinx kitten Gary came in to see her - as was our practice manager Rachel who was taking the photos! Gary is 12 weeks old, super playful and totally adorable. A perfect choice of breed for Gary's human mum who wanted a cat but is allergic to cat hair. We were told that Gary loves Dreamies and here's the evidence! He was even steadying Emma's hand so that he didn't miss out on his treat!

MIA HEADS OFF ON MATERNITY LEAVE

Anyone popping into practice on Friday lunchtime will have seen us having a long lunch to wish Mia all the best as Friday was her last day in practice before heading on maternity leave. It’s just 2 weeks until baby is due! We can’t wait to meet her! Hoping you manage to get some rest over the next fortnight, Mia, and we all look forward to hearing the exciting news that baby has arrived. We were delighted that Charlotte, who went on maternity leave in January, was able to join us on Friday with beautiful baby Colby. It won’t be long before there are two babies for us all to cuddle!

WELCOME BACK!

We were delighted to welcome Beth back from maternity leave at the end of January and many of you will already have spotted her on reception desk since she’s been back! Beth returns to the brand-new hybrid position of Client Services and Operations Coordinator. This means that, in addition to carrying out reception activity and using her SQP qualification to help streamline dispensing on desk, Beth will also spend part of her working week supporting our Operations Manager with improving efficiencies in practice as we continue to grow. This new part of Beth’s role includes price and stock checking, cross-referencing and ordering as well as checking agreed stock-related and waste reduction initiatives are being implemented. Beth will be on reception every Friday, and she’ll cover when other reception team members are poorly, have holidays booked or as the need arises. Not only does this mean that we’ll have more dedicated reception team members on desk more of the time, but it means you’ll get to see Beth on a regular basis too!

HOMEMADE CAT CLIMBER A WINNER!

This is an amazing cat climber that one of our clients has made for their cat family. Huge thanks for sharing. If you are looking for the perfect valentine’s gift for your feline friend, this could be it! The climbing pole is a fence post covered in sisal rope, bought off the internet, together with 4 brackets. Look at the little cat lounging shelf at the top! Total cost of materials was £45. Much cheaper than buying similar products on the internet and endless entertainment for cats!

WELCOME BACK!

Many of you will have recognised a familiar face back on the 387 and West Midlands Cat Clinic Team! We were delighted to welcome Alanna Ankcorn back in January as a Registered Veterinary Nurse, taking our Registered Veterinary Nursing team to a new total of 10. Alanna first came to 387 Vets in January 2019 on a 3-year Student Veterinary Nurse contract in order to undertake her Level 3 Veterinary Nursing Diploma. Since qualification in 2022, Alanna has gained a huge diversity of nursing experience, working in small animal veterinary nursing most recently as a locum nurse. Positions have included small animal general practice, day and night work in veterinary hospital and referral centre nursing, and not just locally but country-wide. Keen to settle back into a permanent nursing position, Alanna applied for our recent RVN vacancy, and started back with us almost 6 years to the day she arrived as a student nurse! Super proactive, she’s hit the ground running and is already keen to start nutrition ambassador training, clinical coaching training and is a member of our practice eco team. It’s lovely to have you back, Alanna.

WOW!

Wow! A huge thank you to everyone who donated to our 'Give a Pet a Christmas Dinner' campaign this December. As you can see, we were literally bowled over by the amount of goodies you brought in to practice to support cats and dogs in local shelters waiting for their forever homes. We collected just shy of 600 tins and sachets of wet food, more than our Clinical Director Hamish's weight in dry food, 66 packets of treats, 50 towels and blankets, 66 leads and harnesses and enough toys for 138 pets to have a gift each. That's not to mention coats, pet accessories, bedding, bowls, bandanas, poo bags, puppy pads and more!

All dog donations go to the Coven branch of Birmingham Dogs Home, whilst cat goods are distributed amongst local cat rescue charities. We know recipients will be touched and incredibly grateful for your amazing kindness and generosity. Thank you for sharing the love with pets in need.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Huge congratulations to our Registered Veterinary Nurse Lauren who received her International Society of Feline Medicine Feline Nursing Diploma results yesterday. We are over the moon to announce she passed with distinction!

Completing the ISFM’s Feline Nursing Diploma was no mean feat. The course spanned 16 months and 8 modules and delivered a comprehensive insight into feline physical health and mental wellbeing with a view to making experiences in clinic even more cat friendly. Diploma students are required to study for around 15 hours a week outside work with regular assessment throughout, and all training resources are produced by international cat experts so graduates come away with a brilliant bank of knowledge and lots of tools to use in day to day practice

Lauren joins one of around 200 ISFM Feline Nursing Diploma holders to date. Based primarily in theatre and in hospitalisation areas, we can’t wait for Lauren to share new learning and top tips on how we can continue to improve the clinic experience for felines who come to stay.
