FESTIVE OPENING HOURS AT THE WEST MIDLANDS CAT CLINIC

It’s hard to believe Christmas is only a couple of days away! Here is our Lead Nurse Cody getting into the Christmas spirit in her festive-themed theatre cap!

Whilst appointments at The West Midlands Cat Clinic end today for Christmas, our interconnecting 387 Veterinary Centre is open on Christmas Eve until 2pm should you need to get in touch. All team are taking well deserved time off on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and open again again as normal on 27th December.

New Year's Eve will follow Christmas Eve with regard to team availability and opening hours and we are closed on New Year's Day. All resumes as normal from 2nd January 2025!

If you have any concerns about your cat's health while we are closed, all registered clients have free access to Vidivet, a 24/7 service offering triage advice from a qualified vet. Great if you have any meds queries or if you are unsure whether your feline friend needs to see a vet urgently. Check out communications from the practice for information on how to access if you haven’t already downloaded the app. The Advice 24/7 page on our website (https://wmcatclinic.co.uk) provides lots of additional information on assessing your cat’s health:

If you do have a pet emergency, please continue to call the practice on 01922 411755 and follow the answer machine instructions.

IT'S DEFINITELY REALLY NEARLY CHRISTMAS!

A huge thank you to our Operations Manager Jo who has made us a beautiful Christmas cake, as she does every year, for the team to tuck into in the final week’s lead up to the big day. Needless to say, the cake no longer looks like this but has already been partially sliced! We wonder whether it will last the duration before we close for Christmas and Boxing Day!

WE CAN SEE YOU!

This is beautiful Arthur who came in for diagnostics and made himself at home in our quiet cat ward! Here he is as we were getting him ready to go home. He didn’t want to leave the litter tray which he’d turned into a cosy bed, and was much more interested in having tickles under his chin!

WE'RE BACK!

We are now all back from our first ever off-site whole team training event! Thank you very much for bearing with us while the practice was closed between 10am and 3pm today to facilitate this. A huge shout out to Gemma from Vet Dynamics, who ran the session on team profiling and communication and how we can best utilise our individual strengths. A great learning event, and we look forward to putting our training into practice in the coming weeks and months.

GOOD JOB PIXIE!

This is beautiful Pixie who came in to see Emma today for a meds and health check. Nine year old Pixie was diagnosed with diabetes earlier this year, and at the beginning of treatment was around 4kg. With careful monitoring and tweaking of his insulin treatment, Pixie is doing brilliantly, has put on 2kg and got a great report at his health check today! Well done Pixie!

The most obvious signs that your cat may be suffering from diabetes are an increased thirst, urinating more frequently and losing weight whilst still having a good appetite. If you notice any of these symptoms please do bring your cat in for a check up. If your cat does have diabetes, we can advise you on how to manage feline diabetes at home and we’re only a phone call away for support.

HELPING LOCAL PETS IN SHELTER THIS CHRISTMAS

As many of you know, every year we run a ‘Give a Pet a Christmas Dinner’ campaign to collect food and accessories for local cats and dogs in shelter. As it’s December, our 2024 Christmas collection is now live!

We’re collecting wet and dry pet food, treats, bedding, leads, collars, toys, feeding and water bowls – essentially anything that would be of benefit to pets less fortunate than our own this Christmas. We have a collection point on the ramp leading up to 387 Vets reception, and we also have a festive collection box in the foyer to the West Midlands Cat Clinic. The campaign runs right up until 31st December, and in January, we’ll distribute donations between local pet charities.

A huge thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity. Last year we collected over 100kg of dry food and over 500 sachets and tins of wet food, not to mention heaps of accessories to make life better for pets waiting for their new forever homes. Incredible! Let’s see if we beat that this year!

A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE!

This is beautiful kitten Eevee who had a great time making the most of chilling out on our cat climbing cubes in the consult room. She had a great view from the top of the top cube, and changed resting positions to see whether she liked leaning against the wall or dangling over the cube’s roof best!

BEWARE MICROCHIP SCAM

We wanted to make you aware of a current scam to which one of our clients has unfortunately fallen victim. False microchip companies are contacting owners to advise them their pet’s microchips are about to expire and that owners need to pay a fee to reactivate. Do not pay. If in any doubt about your pet’s microchip status please contact the company your pet’s microchip is registered with directly. We are happy to scan your pet and confirm who holds their microchip registration details if you are unsure.

HELLO FROM LONDON VET SHOW!

A big shout out to Hamish, Paige and Emma who are currently at the London Vet Show. Hot on the heels of the Investors in People Awards on Wednesday night, the three headed to ExCeL first thing on Thursday morning for the two-day veterinary congress. A highlight on the professional development calendar, this year, London Vet Show has an incredible 29 dedicated training areas delivering a huge diversity of sessions on the latest in veterinary thinking from world-class speakers in their field.

We look forward to hearing all about congress next week, and finding out what golden nuggets of clinical knowledge and practical skill we can implement here at 387 Vets & The West Midlands Cat Clinic to keep driving our standards of care forwards.

INVESTORS IN PEOPLE AWARDS 2024

We had an amazing time at the Investors in People Awards last night in London which celebrated excellence in business performance with an emphasis on people leadership, well-being, support and development. The awards recognised not just British companies but IiP organisations worldwide.

387 Vets were finalists in the UK Employer of the Year awards for platinum accredited organisations with 2-49 employees. Huge thanks to everyone who sent us messages of support. We didn’t win but felt proud to be shortlisted as one of the cream of the crop and privileged to spend the evening with high achieving organisations from a such a diverse range of business sectors.

LONDON-BOUND

Directors Hamish and Rachel, and our vet Emma and RVN Paige are making their way to the big smoke this afternoon to attend the Investors in People (IiP) Awards tonight. As one of the top 20 platinum businesses in IiP’s ‘We Invest in People’ accreditation scheme this year, we were invited to enter their UK Employer of the Year award for businesses with 2-49 employees. Exciting! We were extra delighted to discover we are one of the shortlisted finalists tonight!

The award ceremony at Old Billingsgate promises to be a glamorous red carpet event. Compered by Anna Richardson, comedian Russell Kane will be providing entertainment and there’s also a live band. Awards will be presented after a three course dinner. And throughout the night, there will be a DJ to get the 800 attendees up and shaking their moves on the dance floor!

We promise to send photos when we are all glammed up! We are keeping our fingers crossed!

HAPPY CATS

We love this photo so much we wanted to share! This is our RVN and Cat Friendly Clinic nurse advocate Rachael taking a second vaccination appointment. The two kittens, who were rescues but who now have a new forever home, were super happy and friendly, and were so keen to say hi and get Rachael’s attention that they kept giving her face bumps and almost knocked off her glasses! Happy cats and happy nurse!

AUTUMN FIREWORKS AND HELPING CATS COPE

It’s Halloween tomorrow! This means it’s very nearly fireworks season again, with many official events planned for this and next weekend. Fireworks displays can be a scary time for our feline friends with unpredictable loud bangs and flashes.

To help cats cope, it’s best to keep them in on fireworks night or when you know fireworks are scheduled locally. Not only does this help to muffle the noise, but it also keeps them safe and prevents them from running off to hide and getting lost. Make sure cat flaps are locked shut and that you have a couple of clean litter trays positioned by your cat’s normal exit or in their normal toileting area. Worth checking windows are closed too.

Cats are very good at taking themselves off to hide when frightened so leave them open access to potential hiding spots or places you know they like to go to curl up. This could be under a bed, on top of a wardrobe, in their cat bed, or even in the laundry cupboard. Cats are very inventive! You could place a box with familiar bedding or towels somewhere cosy and safe now to give your feline friend an additional option.

Trying to engage or coax cats out of their hiding place when they feel fearful and threatened only increases their stress, so best to leave them until they are ready to come out of their own accord. This will also save you from inadvertently getting bitten or scratched if your cat becomes reactive.

Pheromone diffusers can help to calm and reassure cats. We use them at The West Midlands Cat Clinic to reduce feline stress on visits to the vets and they work similarly in other potentially stressful environments.

Please do give us a ring on 01922 411755 if you are in need of any further advice.

Wishing you and your feline friends a safe fireworks season.

IS YOUR FELINE FRIEND A BIT TOO CUDDLY?

This still is taken from a great new Hills pet food video designed to make pet owners think about how they perceive their cat or dog’s body condition versus what the reality might be.

The charity International Cat Care estimates that between a third and 50% of cats in the UK are overweight or obese. Excess weight can creep on for a number of reasons. We may overfeed our feline friends or they may overeat; they may have become less active; perhaps they have been neutered and their diet hasn’t been adjusted appropriately to take into account their slower metabolism; or maybe they are a breed predisposed to retaining weight.

Cats with an ideal body weight have an obvious waist when looking from the side or from above. You should be able to feel their ribs and spine through light tough with the palm of your hand but not be able to see them. How does you pet measure up?

Having optimum body condition means huge health and wellbeing benefits for your feline friend. If you’re concerned your cat may be over (or under) weight, please give us a ring on 01922 411755 to arrange to chat to one of our Registered Veterinary Nurses for nutrition advice.
