WINNERS OF BVA WELLBEING AWARD

Our Practice Manager Rachel and RVN Alanna had an exciting day yesterday as they attended the British Veterinary Association (BVA) Awards hosted at their London headquarters. The BVA present a small number of awards each year recognising excellence in the UK veterinary sphere. The portfolio includes their Wellbeing Award to highlight inspirational practices that prioritise the wellbeing of their employees through a range of creative approaches. We were absolutely thrilled that 387 Vets (and The West Midlands Cat Clinic) were announced as winner of this year’s BVA Wellbeing Award in the large vet practice category (over 25 employees).

The award was presented by BVA President Dr Rob Williams, for our open communication strategy. He made particular reference to our accountability toolkit for respectfully challenging behaviours that don’t meet our agreed practice values as being “really impressive.”

Wellbeing remains a hot topic in the veterinary industry and initiatives that were innovative 10 years ago are now more of an expected norm. To be recognised at such a prestigious level for our ongoing investment in new ways to make work better feels incredible.

FUNDRAISING FOR A GREAT CAUSE

Looking after our wellbeing and mental health remains a hot topic in the veterinary world as the industry continues to experience significantly higher levels of su***de and depression than the general population.

This World Mental Health Day, we’d like to raise awareness about a fundraising challenge members of the 387 & West Midlands Cat Clinic team are currently undertaking in support of mental health charity Vetlife. Vetlife works to ensure that people in the veterinary community are aware of signposts to the right help if anxious, overwhelmed and struggling to cope. They fully fund their own 24/7 helpline, have a dedicated Health Support Team, and offer financial aid, on application, to members of the veterinary community struggling to make ends meet.

11 members of our team are currently participating in Vetlife’s ‘Active October’ campaign. Our target is to cover 700 miles this month through exercise, and we’re aiming to raise a pound for every mile!

If you’d like to support us, please click on the link below to access our just giving page. Your donation will help to make things better for someone struggling with their mental health.

CENTRE OF ATTENTION!

We love it when our furry visitors make themselves at home in cat clinic consults. Meet Dozee who came in to see our vet Jen Jen for a health check yesterday. The 14 year old decided to settle down by Jen Jen’s computer keyboard – we wonder if she was thinking about helping Jen Jen to type up her clinical notes!

RECEPTION TEAM AT BVRA CONGRESS

We love supporting our team with their professional development and bringing new ideas back into practice. Last week, our receptionists Clare and Emma attended the British Veterinary Receptionist Association (BVRA) Congress in Solihull for a full day of lectures specifically designed for veterinary receptionist growth and support. The diverse range of presentation topics included overcoming subtle communication pitfalls, elevating the client experience beyond the reception desk, supporting neurodivergent colleagues and clients, wildlife emergencies and being a rabbit friendly veterinary receptionist. Clare and Emma had a great first BVRA Congress experience and came back buzzing with feedback. We look forward to continuing to improve our service to you and your furry friends!

EFFECTIVE STRATEGY!

This is beautiful Gigi who started on a weight management programme with our Lead Nurse Cody last month. To help slow down her eating and to stop her from stealing the other cats’ food, her owner has made her a really simple but effective puzzle feeder. She’s made feeding time fun by putting cat biscuits into a toilet roll tube, so Gigi has to work for her food and is less tempted to overindulge as her tummy has more time to digest and feel full. Gigi has mastered the system! Clever girl!

DIRECTORS WIN PRESTIGIOUS LEADERSHIP AWARD

Last week, 387 Vets and West Midlands Cat Clinic directors Hamish and Rachel Duncan attended the Vet Dynamics Annual Conference with other like-minded independent practices, for two days of interactive lectures, workshops, Q&As and panel presentations all targeted to help independent practices thrive. Hamish and Rachel have been part of Vet Dynamics since 2021, an organisation which coaches independent practices to improve their business performance, leadership skills and team culture.

The conference culminated on Friday night with an awards ceremony in recognition of independent practices within the Vet Dynamics’ Community that particularly shine. Hamish and Rachel were delighted to be finalists for a Dynamic Team Award for the third year running, and this year, to win! Here they are with their Vet Dynamics coach Gemma and a rather fantastic lightbulb trophy and certificate!

Hamish and Rachel’s award was presented, “in recognition of their commitment to creating a workplace where shared values, growth and continual improvement allow teams to thrive. Through investment in development, the removal of obstacles and thoughtful role design, they foster engagement, collaboration and flow that strengthen both wellbeing and practice performance.”

What a fantastic honour to be singled out amongst so many other forward-thinking practices. We are still smiling!

HAPPY HABITUATION!

This is our Cat Friendly Clinic Advocate and Registered Veterinary Nurse Rachael having some play time with one of our kitten visitors! The kitten was in with the rest of the litter for second vaccinations and microchipping and as there was no one in directly after their appointment, they stayed on for a habituation session in the consult room.

Habituation sessions help to build pet confidence around the veterinary environment to help normalise the experience and reduce pet stress on future visits. Pets are given time to potter and explore the consult room and are slowly, gently and positively introduced to pieces of equipment that will be used routinely at health checks, normally across several sessions, so they’re not so scary later down the line.

Habituation sessions are all about positive reinforcement. There are lots of treats involved, including the use of LickiMats® which pets love. Having a happy time at the vets when pets are young is so important as it supports wellbeing on veterinary visits throughout later life.

SEPSIS AWARENESS MONTH

Did you know that September is Sepsis Awareness Month? Our student nurse Isabel is particularly passionate about promoting awareness about the condition as she very sadly lost her brother to sepsis. If you’re due in for a visit this month, please help yourself to one of UK Sepsis Trust’s leaflets on display in our 387 and West Midlands Cat Clinic waiting areas. Knowing the signs of sepsis – an emergency condition – could save a life.

Sepsis is where the immune system overreacts to an infection, and whilst not preventable, it is treatable if caught quickly. Typical signs in adults include slurred speech, extreme shivering, severe breathlessness, mottled skin and passing no urine. In children, signs include fast breathing, convulsions, a mottled rash, being very lethargic and feeling abnormally cold to touch. If you or someone you know exhibit any of these symptoms, seek urgent medical attention and ask, “Could it be sepsis?” You’ll see this slogan on the side of lots of ambulances.

As well as leaflets, Isabel has brought in a limited number of promo giveaways from The UK Sepsis Trust. So, for early birds picking up a leaflet from us this month, you may be lucky enough to pick up a treat too!

EXCITING TIMES AHEAD!

On Friday, we held a special lunch for our Registered Veterinary Nurse Renée as it was her last day in practice before starting her maternity leave. This is Renée’s second baby, and we can’t wait to find out whether there will be a new little boy or little girl joining her beautiful family! In true 387 style, we stopped to have lunch together, enjoyed lots of yummy treats and presented Renée with a few little gifts to wish her well, including this gorgeous bouquet arranged by our RVN Charlotte who is on maternity leave and came in to say hello with baby Colby. A big hello, too, to our RVN Mia and Freya and to Beth and Benji, who also came in specially to join the party! We’re super-excited for you and Tom, Renée, and look forward to meeting little one!
