🦴 Exploring Joint Supplements 🐾

As a veterinary physiotherapists we’re often asked about joint supplements — and with good reason. When chosen carefully, as part of a multimodal treatment plan, the right supplement can support your dog’s mobility and reduce their discomfort.

Supplements also known as nutracuticals should never replace medication and proper treatment provided by a vet led team but can be helpful alongside this.

NOt all supplements are created equal. Here’s what we look for based on the limited current veterinary research:

🐟 EPA & DHA (Omega-3 Fatty Acids)
These powerful anti-inflammatory compounds from fish oil are among the most studied. Research shows they can reduce joint inflammation and improve weight-bearing in arthritic dogs — a key factor in restoring functional movement.
It's also I.protant to get the right balance of omega 3 to omega 6 fatty acids as omega 6 fatty acids can me pro-inflammatory meaning the promote inflammation rather than help reduce it!

🦪 Green-Lipped Mussel (GLM)
GLM contains omega-3s, glycosaminoglycans (like chondroitin), and other joint-supportive nutrients. Clinical trials have shown measurable improvements in pain scores and mobility in dogs with osteoarthritis, making it a valuable adjunct in rehab.

💊 Glucosamine & Chondroitin Sulfate
These are structural components of cartilage that help maintain joint integrity. Studies suggest long-term use may slow degenerative changes and improve comfort — particularly when paired with physiotherapy and controlled exercise.

🌿 MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)
MSM is an anti-inflammatory compound that may enhance joint flexibility and comfort. It’s commonly used alongside glucosamine/chondroitin in multi-ingredient formulas with evidence supporting its benefit in dogs with chronic joint conditions.

🌿 Curcumin (Turmeric)
The active compound in turmeric, curcumin has strong anti-inflammatory properties. While bioavailability is a challenge, enhanced formulations (e.g., with piperine) may support pain management in combination with other modalities.

🌳 Boswellia serrata
Boswellia has shown promise in reducing lameness and swelling in some canine studies. As part of a multimodal plan, it may assist in managing chronic inflammation.

💧 Hyaluronic Acid (HA)
HA helps lubricate joints and cushion cartilage. While commonly used in injections, oral forms have shown some potential benefits for joint hydration and flexibility.

⚠️ Our Clinical Takeaway:
There is very limited research on joint supplements for dogs. We would recommend supplements backed by peer-reviewed veterinary studies where possible. Supplements aren’t standalone solutions — but when combined with other treatments such as NSAIDs and physiotherapy, as part of a holistic treatment plan tailored to each dog they can be a helpful add on.

We had the lovely Daschund trio in to swim today whilst they are staying with us. They each cheered each other on and seemed to have a great time at their pool party !
