Chico is sadly on his third massive Leish flare up since we lost the Squadfather. He’s very poorly this time and is struggling, he has therefore made his way to the hallowed and usually fairly clean ‘upstairs’
We started him on Allopurinol and Milteforin two days ago. Send him all the love folks ❤️😞

Earlier this year we told you about new funding that Dr. Sally Ricketts had secured, in collaboration with Linnaeus Veterinary and the University of Helsinki, to extend our epilepsy research into FIVE new at-risk breeds - the Beagle, English Springer Spaniel, Giant Schnauzer, Hungarian Vizsla and Irish Setter.
We have been actively recruiting samples from case and control dogs over the last 6 months ready to send for whole genome sequencing (WGS) and last month our spotlight was on the English Springer Spaniel where you were all amazing in your help, thank you! Now it's the turn of the Irish Setter as we need more samples please🙏
Do you have a setter that ..... has been diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy
OR.. is over 8 years old AND unaffected by epilepsy?

We’ve collectively had lots of dogs between us over the years, rescues and pedigrees. Sadly because we’re so old we’ve lost so many of these wonderful pets. Our dogs grew up with our children and they were part of the family. Inevitably our kids all grew up and moved out into the world, and then we were just us two.
When we lost our beloved Ted (Springer) two years ago we wanted to find a companion for his brother Bailey (Gordon) as his grief was as great as ours and he had withdrawn completely. Bailey at the time also had a mass in his chest, but he survived a further two years following diagnosis and still maintained a comfortable and fulfilling life.
We placed a call out to our doggo friends on Facebook, and thats where we met and fell in love with CASTRO from Corfu. We’re not sure what breed Castro is and to be honest we don’t care. He brought joy to Bailey almost immediately, and woke him from his grief. Castro also distracted us from ours. CASTRO was rescued by the very lovely Jennifer Gardiner and Rania Krasaki.
Ted (Springer) had such a marvellous life, we decided over wine that if we could save one dog, maybe we could help more? we were inundated with rescue posts which made us both very sad.
We were sent a video of MORGAN (then known as freeman) he was in kennels and looked so desperate to get out. MORGAN was rescued from Spain via Settusfree from Setters Home. He was so thin when he arrived I cried.
BLUE was a Christmas gift from my husband and he has a very prestigous pedigree, boy does he know it!
We saw ELLIS advertised by Setters Europe, he was described as the boy with no name. He had been found living under a car on the streets of Spain. It killed us both to think that he had had such a shocking life. ELLIS arrived the same weekend as BLUE (poor planning on our part) ELLIS is a beautiful tricolour setter, he suffers terribly with anxiety because he’s never lived in a home environment and we believe based on his mannerisms that he’s been mistreated. For the first two weeks after he arrived he was terribly stressed, he didnt sleep for two weeks and neither did we. ELLIS is probably the only dog we’ve ever contemplated sending back to the rescue. We persevered, we loved him, we taught him how to play and now he is an absolute gentleman on the lead, he loves to play fetch and he craves human attention.
CHICO was next... we had a message from Jennifer Gardiner (Castro’s rescuer) saying this boy had been found tied to a lamp post. At the time we were horrified, but now we know why LOL Chico had been all but abandoned by his owner who couldn’t care for him, he was positive for Leish which required twice daily medications, we just had to rescue him.
When CHICO arrived at 2am on the transport from Corfu we were handed him, his passport and his medication and the courier said ‘You’re welcome to that one’. He barrelled through the door straight into my arms and knocked me over.
He’s a handful, he’s a pistol, but he’s my pistol and I adore him.
There are times when the squad are not always perfect, there are times when we look at each other and say ‘we have too many dogs’... My husband always replies, ‘which one would you get rid of?’ and my reply ‘None of them’.
We wouldn’t be without them, they can make or break your day in a heartbeat, but they make life fulfilling, they make us smile and they give the best HUGS.
