MONDAY FEEDING 𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡 #𝟐 – 𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐟𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞

A lack of fitness is commonly misinterpreted for the need to feed more energy but feeding extra energy will normally just result in the horse getting excitable in the short term or getting fat.

Extra feed means extra calories, and as calories are just a measurement of energy, energy cannot be added without adding calories, which can result in weight gain. If your horse becomes overweight, then their potential to develop laminitis increases which is a significant health risk.

The key is to look at whether your horse is fit enough for their work and in the right condition for optimum performance. An overweight horse will be lacking in energy, so it's important to look at reducing calorie intake and increasing calorie output through increased exercise, so they are better able to cope with work demands.

A horse that has the optimum amount of fitness for their work should not be lacking in energy, simply because the amount of energy generated from feed increases with fitness.

Those who know me, know that I have been saying this for over ten years.
Having fixed a lot of horses and ponies which have developed lameness issues following sessions on the water treadmill, if you watch the biomechanics of the horse, they literally paddle to walk through the water, rotating their pelvis and changing their whole way of going. Once these (newly worked) muscles become tired, the horse is asked to repeat the following day and the next day, usually over a week or more, resulting in excessive stress on newly acquired muscles.. and eventual breakdown.

**NEW WATER TREADMILL RESEARCH**

Great to work with an exciting group of researchers looking at the effect that water treadmill exercise has on equine locomotion.

Here is a new paper published in Journal of Equine Veterinary Science, titled “Effect of Water Depth on Limb and Back Kinematics in Horses Walking on a Treadmill”, authors: Carolyne Tranquille*, Jack Tacey, Victoria Walker Russell Mackechnie-Guire, Julie Ellis, Kathryn Nankervis, Richard Newton & Rachel Murray*.
