NEW CLASS

So for 2025 we are not just running our Puppy sensory, Puppy 6 week training and our Puppy University courses. We are adding a few more and here’s the first …..

🐾 Family Dog Gundog Training starts on the 2nd February and will run for 4 weeks.

🐾 We are offering £10 off the usual price of this course until the beginning of May.

🦴 The course will teach your dog memory skills, direction cues off lead, to retrieve multiple items, to retrieve with distractions, a send away to a mat or area, to hold and release an item, to stop when off lead.

🦴 This a great course for dogs with predatory behaviours.

🐾 As usual, our places will be limited to create an individual feel to the support you receive. And, for now, we are only accepting dogs that have been on our training courses or had home training in the past.

The perfect course to progress your dog

Please email [email protected]. And we will send across the registration info.

🦮 Did you know that your dog may be pulling on the lead for other issues and it not just being a simple training one?

🐕 That’s where our experience shines above the trainers who promise to stop your dog pulling in an hours training session.

🦮 We assess your dog to ensure they are not pulling due to a physical issue. Being trained in Canine biomechanics and gait analysis we can also provide you with a veterinary report and also guide you towards other professionals such as fabulous therapists in our multi modal approach in helping your dog

🐕 We promote responsible Dog Training where the whole dog is analysed and not just the behaviour.

Why you will not see the work we do on social media videos.

🐾 We respect the GDPR rules and yours and your dogs privacy. We understand that having a dog not behaviour in the way you wish can be embarrassing and that it’s a private journey you wish to embark on when reaching out for help.

🐾 We know our qualifications and experience speak for themselves with the results we achieve. So we don’t need to try to bait people in to using us by plastering you all over socials for our own gratification.

🐾 We also are experienced and trained to know that dog training is not one size fits all.

A dog pulling on a lead, not listening to your cues (often described as stubborn) or being reactive around other dogs may not simply require training walks or socialisation programmes and classes.

Your dog may have a physical issue that actually prevents them from being able to complete these tasks and as much as they try to please us, they simply can’t.
In these cases we work closely with vets and therapists in a multi modal approach. Usually covered by your pets insurance.

🐾 Do take a look though at some of our case studies to see what we do.

Your dog training journey is unique to you and your dog and at Brockhill dogs we look at the whole dog when trying to help your dog achieve his best.

Walk with me; don’t just walk me. Slow down and see the world as I do. I know you’ve got things to do, places to be. But out here, with the ground beneath our feet and the sky above us, there’s a whole world worth noticing.
The autumn chill is in the air today, crisp and full of new smells. It’s different from yesterday, and different from the day before. Every day is new. The leaves crunch under my paws, and I stop to breathe in the rich, earthy scent of them. To you, it might just be a pile of leaves, but to me, it’s a story—one I can’t help but dive into, nose first.
There’s a squirrel somewhere nearby, I can sense it, darting up a tree, its tiny heart beating fast. And the wind carries whispers of things far away: a family cooking dinner, the trace of a cat that passed by early this morning, and the faint perfume of flowers holding on to their last bit of summer. It’s all here, swirling around us if you just take the time to notice.
You tug on the leash, eager to move on, and I can tell you’re thinking about something far away from here. But when we walk, truly walk, you and I can be in this moment together. Feel the cool air brush against your skin, let it wake you up. Notice how the sun filters through the branches, casting shadows that dance on the pavement. Hear the crunch of the leaves beneath our steps, like a secret rhythm just for us.
To you, it might be just another walk, a daily routine to tick off the list. But for me, every step is an adventure. Each scent is a clue, each sound a piece of a puzzle. When you walk with me, really walk with me, you’ll see it too. The world is bigger than what we’re rushing toward. It’s right here, in the small moments, in the quiet spaces between your thoughts.
So, slow down. Breathe. Let the chill fill your lungs and the colours fill your eyes. Walk with me, don’t just walk me. See the world as I do, if only for a little while. It’s all waiting for you, just beneath the surface.

My view perfectly worded by another trainer using the same methods i use

I'm tired of being told that my repulsion for punitive and aversive training is a lack of knowledge or skills. I'm tired of being told that my 7 years of studying, qualifications and experience working with dogs couldn't possibly stand up to the Facebook expert.
I'm tired of being told that force free training is limited and that it only works with some breeds. I'm tired of seeing friends and fellow force free trainers being accused of abuse because they refuse to defend those that would abuse dogs in the name of training.

I choose not to use aversives because I know how they work and their purpose. There is no magic or skill involved, it is designed to be unpleasant and its purpose is to intimidate, control and suppress. I choose to avoid punitive training because of my education and experience. Countless studies demonstrate the harm that aversives inflict and how they impact learning and welfare. Force free training is being used worldwide with a variety of species. If it works with gorillas, tigers and crocodiles, it works with any dog breed.
We will not empathise with abusive dog trainers because we do not want to give them a platform, whereby they can destroy even more dogs. We have plenty to learn from qualified trainers that do not compromise training ethics.

Qualified dog trainers shouldn't have to compete with trainers that only care about tik tok videos and forced compliance. Every force free trainer could use aversives with the same outcome. We choose not to because we understand the consequences and prioritise welfare and long-term results over followers and profit.

Slip leads. Choke chains. E-collars/shock collars. Compressed air sprays. Rattle cans. Figure of eight slip leads. Grot collars.

When someone tells you these tools don't hurt, or the dog 'doesn't really mind', or they are 'just communication' they are being less than honest with you. And they are being less than honest with you because the reality is (rightly) unpalatable to most caring dog owners.

These are all training tools which use (at best) unpleasant and (at worst) painful stimuli to change a dog's behaviour. All training tools which, in order to be effective, the dog 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙩 find unpleasant, painful or scary. All training tools which some trainers will use on your dog as a matter of course without even attempting a milder alternative first.

When a choice is made to use one of these tools it's because the person making that choice...

1. Doesn't 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 that they cause discomfort, pain or the threat thereof; or
2. Doesn't 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦 that they cause discomfort, pain or the threat thereof

It's one thing to genuinely not know about something. We live, we learn and as we learn more we try to do better. But it's another thing entirely to know something and choose to ignore it because the truth is inconvenient.

I'd guesstimate that around 50% of trainers locally use these tools. They aren't the exception and it's not unusual. That's 50% of trainers who either genuinely don't know how these tools work (in which case they don't know enough to be practicing) or 50% of trainers who think threat and/or the infliction of physical discomfort/pain are reasonable things to do to a dog.

So if it matters to you how your dog is treated during training (and it should) do your homework. Don't assume. Ask questions. And educate yourself enough to understand the answers. Because only by asking questions can you ensure you end up with a trainer who matches your own values.

Have you ever watched a dog trainer working with a dog on a TV program or on social media, and the dog is barking and lunging? The dog appears really reactive or aggressive. It looks completely out of control. The trainer forces the dog to face their fears by fully exposing them with no option to flee and suddenly the dog is magically calm. They are no longer barking or lunging. They may even allow the trainer to touch them.

What is this sorcery?

While its often celebrated as magic behavioural change, this is actually behaviour suppression and learned helplessness. The dog did everything they could to get away from the feared stimulus, so they growled, barked and lunged. When the dog realises that all his efforts to escape are in vain, they give up and emotionally shut down. To the untrained eye, this dog appears calm because they are no longer 'shouting'. If the trainer uses an aversive, like a slip lead, prong collar or a shock collar, a dog will likely stop fighting and communicating much faster, especially if their breathing is compromised. (something that happens all too often)

How could removing all agency and choice, and completely ignoring the needs of a dog make them feel better about something they fear? It doesn't. Your dog has just learned to stop communicating and it is one of the most distressing things to witness if you fully recognise what is truly happening in that training session.
