I’m nearly at the end of my course and will be opening up behaviour consultations again soon. But they will be different. However, before then. I need some help.

I need some case studies for the final part of my course.

If you’ve ever wondered if your dog moves correctly, or if they have any issues with their body that may or may not be causing any different behaviours or training issues, then you can get a free assessment done by me.

What it will involve:
I will need to come to your home and take a series of photos and videos of your dog and then ask you some questions about your dog.
I may need to come back and redo some videos or photos if they are not right for my work.

Your dog can be any age. Any breed. And they don’t necessarily have to have any problems that you are aware of.

If you can help. I’d be very grateful.

Please send me a message on messenger if you’d like to have an assessment of your dog as part of my studies.

Did you know that a study found that upto 80% of behaviour issues in dogs is attributed to pain?

Did you also know that your vet may not be able to pick up on that during your vet visit. The reason being that if your dog is worried at going to the vets Adrenalin and cortisol in the system changes the bodies perception to pain and particularly block pain. So as the vet is hands on touching the dog it may not seem painful.

Signs that your dog is anxious at the vets doesn’t have to be a big display of barking or reluctance to go in.
Some dogs will shut down and look as though they are calm to the untrained eye.

Others will act over enthusiastic or excited. This is known as ‘fool around’ and is a tactic used to try to get the vet to stay away from examining the dog and painful areas.

Did you know that a dog that pulls on the lead may be in pain and it’s uncomfortable for them to walk at your pace?
Training isn’t always the answer

14/04/2024

Did you know that if you don’t get to the underlying reason for a dogs behaviour or training issue but instead try to just train the behaviour you desire the problem is likely to resurface or manifest into a new problem?

ADOLESCENCE:
As dogs go through adolescence, it’s safe to say things turn a little topsy-turvy! 🙃

If you’re currently at this stage and feeling like you’ve taken one step forward and two steps back, don’t panic! During this stage of life, there’s a lot going on in their busy little brains.

Here are three facts about the adolescent brain 🧠👇

1. The inhibitory neurons of the amygdala that help to dampen down emotional responses don’t fully mature until the END of adolescence.

2. Communication between the frontal cortex and amygdala, which is essential for skills training, decreases during adolescence.

3. Extinction memory is impaired during adolescence, so if your dog has a bad experience it’s much more likely to lead to a ‘hard wired’ fear memory.

Have patience and compassion as you support and guide your dog through this vulnerable period of brain development.

🗞️🗞️Newsflash. This young man didn't want no sausages🗞️🗞️

Fortunately, my role isn't about sausages 🙃, it's about activating the correct neuro pathways to:-

👌 Reduce stress and cortisol
👌Increase positive feelings
👌 Promote safety in the dogs brain
👌 This will ultimately help open up the learning brain

A great way to do this is by stimulating oxytocin release.

Oxytocin levels peak significantly in both dog owners and dogs when they interact and in particular when the owner positively.

Oxytocin can be increased verbally, upon sight of the owner/familiar person, whilst approaching said person, and touch techniques.

Oxytocin release induced by tactile stimulation is associated with anti-stress effects and lowered cortisol levels, lowered aggression and just all round well being. It's a MUST in my toolkit.

Ignoring your dog and withholding physical contact (if desired by the dog) inhibits oxytocin release and the dogs cortisol levels remain high (Rehn et al., 2014).

Little Bruno has a fantastic relationship with his humans which I utilised. This helped him feel less stressed in the outside world. I'd even say he looked at times like he was having a blast!💘

By the end of the session he was no longer worried about me. In fact, I went home covered in mud as he couldn't get close enough. And with lowered stress, he started chasing food rewards!

Well done Bruno and his lovely humans, I think we all enjoyed a good dose of oxytocin especially wee Bruno.

And as for sausages...there's more to creating behaviour change than a frankfurter.

Not long now until I’ve completed my intensive study course and it’s been a real eye opener.
Did you know that upto 80% of behaviour problems are attributed to pain?

This course is allowing me to spot those signs that all is not well with your dog. Even if you or your vet haven’t spotted it.
The way your dog moves is very telling.

I’ll then work with you and your vet to help your dog get the right treatment.

I’ve watched far too many videos of training sessions where the dog is clearly struggling anatomically yet the behaviour is being attributed to lack of training or ‘naughtiness’

Other trainers in the area do not offer this service and I’m looking forward to changing the way our consultations work.

Our new website will be up and running soon.

And the amount of companies that also recommend these ‘trainers’ shocks me too

No one ever told me that being a dog trainer was so hard. You would think refraining from using abusive methods and constantly gaining qualifications would spare you from people questioning your expertise but in this industry, force free trainers receive a lot of abuse. We also have to compete with others in the industry that don't even hold any recognised qualifications and that proudly use aversive methods.

The industry goes from extremes of "you don't need qualifications to be a dog trainer" to "become a behaviourist in a matter of weeks." Anyone can call themselves a behaviourist, regardless of whether they actually have a degree (or equivalent) and many claim to achieve what would take most of us years, in 6 months or less. In fact, they often charge almost double for their training sessions than those that have recognised qualifications and years of experience. Dog training books written by AI and apps promising users a perfectly obedient dog, have also become popular. This devalues the years of study and experience it takes to be a dog trainer and a writer. It's stealing work from those that are actually qualified and creative enough to do the job.

Recognised companies and even vets, are indorsing aversive trainers who have acquired popularity due to their controversial social media videos or tv shows. Their books are promoted as expert advice, despite them not having one single qualification to their name. They promise the 'perfect dog' whilst encouraging the dog owning public to physically correct and punish their dog. Then the government questions why dog attacks are on the rise. 🤷‍♀️

I'm sad to see so many talented force free trainers throw in the towel but I can't blame them. It can be so demoralising to see abusive trainers be more successful with bookings, social media and business in general. It has truly become a popularity contest, where your qualifications and experience supposedly have no merit.

Although it's difficult to admit, many of us are struggling mentally with this job. If it was just working with dogs, it would be so much easier. Many of us likely spend sleepless nights worrying about the dogs we couldn't help or the fact that we feel powerless to make a real difference in the industry. I'm so thankful to all the professionals that I'm lucky enough to call friends, that continue holding fast to their ethics and doing their part to make the world a safer place for dogs. The dog industry can be a dark place, but it's a little lighter thanks to you. - Holly Leake ©

Still think a trainer who puts these on your dog is worth your money and helping your dog?

Worse still is the so called trainer who uses these and then teaches you to jerk the lead as well, making the pain even worse.

Is it safe and humane to use a choke collar or prong collar on a dog? Can they make a dog more reactive or cause physical injury? Find out why positive dog trainers recommend other options.
