HEROS Charity

HEROS Charity HEROS is dedicated to ensuring former racehorses have a future when their racing days are over. But retirement from racing does not have to mean the end.

Our Story:

Every year thousands of racehorses leave the sport due to injury, old age or a lack of ability. This was the conclusion Grace Muir reached whilst working as Stud Manager at North Farm Stud near Wantage in England. The idea of HEROS Charity began to take shape in the early 1990s, when owners and trainers asked Grace to rehome their racehorses. A large network of clients has now been bui

lt up and many other people contact HEROS daily, as the word spreads. With a lifetime's experience of horses, knowledge and experience of racing, plus a range of excellent contacts, Grace knew there was scope to give these horses a second chance – with a new career. There are many opportunities for them such as eventing, dressage, polo, show-jumping, hacks, companions and more. Since she started rehoming racehorses, with the support of her father and mother, Ian and Agnes Muir, Grace and her team have successfully rehomed hundreds of ex-racehorses. Why HEROS is special...

Although there are other charities in this field, HEROS aims to occupy a special place, by carefully matching horses to their new careers and owners across all the equestrian disciplines. The charity prides itself on working hard to make sure that the match with a new owner is a good one and Grace is always on hand should any change of circumstance occur. Advice and ongoing support on all aspects of care and resettlement are only a phone call away. HEROS Charity was granted charitable status in July 2006 with help from RoR (Retraining of Racehorses), British Horseracing's official charity for the welfare of former racehorses.

Thank you to the North Farm Stud Equestrian team who have worked their socks off this week 🙏

What a relief!

A horrible start to the week meant we made the rare decision of bringing all 92 of our horses in to the barns for a few days. The team have been flat out keeping the barns in order, and the horses exercised, entertained and fed.

Thankfully a cold bright start today lead to an (almost) spring like afternoon and we managed to start turning the horses out again...they were very happy as was Becky, our Head Groom, who took this pic 📸

We're probably not the only equestrian establishment that found relief in today's break from the rain! We know winter definitely isn't over yet, but today we took a breath 😊

We had a wonderful day yesterday at the Retraining of Racehorses Awards at Cheltenham Racecourse celebrating another fantastic award and achievement of our CEO and Founder Grace Elizabeth Muir and HEROS. 🏆🐎💚

We are absolutely delighted and extremely proud of Grace and HEROS, winning The Sir Peter O'Sullevan Charitable Trust RoR Community Impact Award. It is amazing to see Grace's passion, hard work and unwavering dedication get recognised with this prestigious award. 😁😊🐎🌟💚

Our heartfelt thanks goes to everyone who voted for Grace, without your continued support, we would not be able to continue the work we to do to give both former racehorses and young people a bright future. 🙏🏽🌟🐎
