✨🐶Star patient Nuki🐶✨

This handsome little man came to us after ingesting an unknown toxin Nuki begun to seize and entered into a state called ‘status epilepticus’. This is when a patient enters into a period of seizure that does not stop for an extended period of time.

In order to try to stop the seizures and remove the toxins from Nukis tiny little body we completed a gastric lavage under general anaesthetic to try to remove any residual toxin, we also provided fluid therapy and began a constant rate infusion of propofol to try and calm the seizures, whilst we sought specialist advice.

Poor Nuki continued to seize for 7 hours, during this time he was maintained on various medication to reduce the seizure activity and eventually we were able to reduce the medications that were stopping his seizures.

The extent of the damage to Nuki’s brain was still unclear 12 hours later as he was able to lift his head but the rest of his limps were fully immobile.
The nurses were concerned that the reason for his limb immobility could be due to a build of lactic acid in his muscles which was causing the cramping and stiffness that we were seeing.

The nurses begun intensive physiotherapy to stimulate normal control or his limbs and remove the lactic acid build up. For the first few hours it didn’t look to promising, but then a miracle happened and Nuki managed to stand by himself, then over 4 hours Nuki got stronger and he took his first walk outside with support of a sling. If you listen to the videos you can hear the joy in the nurses voice when he was walking on his own😆🥰

24 hours later and Nuki was walking on his own still a little bit wobbly but able to return home to his wonderful family, who truly adore him.

It is not often that we see such an intense case have such a happy ending, but this one was emotional for the entire team. To be able to send Nuki home after such a struggle was the greatest blessing any of us here at Walton lodge could have asked for. We are confident that with the love of his family, he will continue to go from strength to strength and make a full recovery in no time 🐾🩵🐾🩵🐾

💊 Medical Monday 💊

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) ❤️‍🩹🩺

This is a disease affecting the muscle of the heart and is most commonly seen in medium to large-breed dogs.

Dilated cardiomyopathy can occur due to abnormality of the heart muscle itself, but can also be seen secondary to diet, abnormal heart rhythms, infectious causes or metabolic diseases.

The overall effect of DCM is a decrease in the pumping ability of the heart and because it is unable to pump blood strongly enough, it becomes overloaded and starts to stretch.
The chambers of the heart then increase in size and if the heart can no longer stretch any further, fluid can back up from the heart into the lungs.

Prep! 🩺👩🏻‍⚕️
Welcome to our main prep area!

We use this area all throughout the day for various different reasons but most of it says it in the name!
This preparation areas leads to our main sterile theatre, both wards, consulting rooms, the laboratory and diagnostic imaging areas.🩺🔬🩻🧪

All pets that are admitted will be taken into this area for a general/ preoperative health check where any blood samples will be taken and intravenous catheters will be placed. 🩸🩹

This multipurpose space is also used to prepare our surgical patients before their procedure including pre-medication, inducing anaesthesia, intubation, clipping and cleaning the surgical site prior to a sterile scrub in theatre. 😷⚒️

💊Medical Monday 💊

Anaemia 🩸

Anemia occurs when there is a decrease in the number of red blood cells.
It can develop from loss, destruction, or lack of production of red blood cells

Regenerative anaemia - this is when the bone marrow DOES responds and produces more red blood cells

Non-regenerative anaemia - this is when it he bone marrow does NOT respond and unable to produce more red blood cells

Why is anaemia dangerous? 🩸‼️🆘

The main function of a red blood cell is to carry oxygen from our lungs and deliver it to our body’s tissues. Therefore if there is not enough red blood cells our body does not receive the amount of oxygen we need to function properly.

⚒️Theatre Thursday ⚒️

Capnography 🫁

This measures the amount of carbon dioxide in a patient’s breath and the effectiveness whilst they are under anaesthesia.

It is shown as a number and a graph and can give us a large amount of information about a patients condition and early warning signs of any airway issues.

As we head into the autumn, we receive lots of enquiries regarding acorns and oak trees (Quercus species).

Ingestion of acorns by dogs is common during the autumn months. Following a large, one off ingestion of acorns, vomiting and diarrhoea may occur in dogs, both of which may be bloody. Lethargy, abdominal tenderness and inappetence can also be seen and there is also the risk of gastrointestinal obstruction. There have been reports of kidney and liver damage following substantial or repeat ingestion of both acorns and the plant itself, a scenario more commonly seen in horses and ruminants.

Oak toxicity predominantly affects grazing species such as cattle, horses and sheep, but it can affect dogs and cats too.

Oak toxicity can cause:
❗ Gastrointestinal signs (such as vomiting, diarrhoea, colic)
❗ Inappetence
❗ Gastrointestinal obstruction (particularly if a large number of acorns have been ingested)
❗ Kidney and liver impairment (reported in a small number of cases involving dogs, horses and ruminants)

📞If you suspect your pet has been exposed to oak, call the Animal PoisonLine on 01202 509000 for advice. Veterinary professionals can call VPIS on 0207 305 5055.
