So very proud of Chloe and Merlot who went to their first agility competition today and then came away with a 1st in jumping, they have worked very hard over the last two years and it has paid off!
Agility is not always easy but the rewards make up for it!

Did you know that agility is so much more than jumping jumps going through tunnels and over contact equipment…. Agility entails human and dog to be in sync with each other, the handler (that’s what us humans are called) are the satnav around the course cueing where and how the equipment is to be taken, whilst our dogs perform the manoeuvres at speed always listening or keeping an eye on the handlers for those important instructions.
The most used bit of equipment on a course is the jump, it can be taken from the front, the back, as a slice or as a wrap, sometimes even you have to run past it altogether. Even the tunnel (and weaves) can be taken in several different ways, entries and exits are so important. But the most important thing is that you and your dog have a safe and enjoyable time.
So when you join Milnersmutts there are loads of ground work exercises that are taught that can be done with little or no equipment to ensure your dog understands what you are asking and to do it safely. This is also why you can take foundation classes with your younger dogs (from 6months). If Alison hasn’t got any classes or courses then you can start 1-2-1s that are tailored to you and your dogs needs. With nearly 15 years of dog training and agility experience, competing with several different breeds of dogs at different heights and achieving grade 7 with her own dogs. As well as helping her own clients to walk into the ring for the first time working up the grades to achieve grade 7, semi-finals and finals at discover dogs and with over 7 years experience of judging. You know that Alison can not only introduce you to a fantastic hobby with your dog but provide you with the skills if you decide that you would like to go further.

If you would like to book a 1-2-1 agility or see what it is all about then why not contact Alison.

I have a space for dog walking on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Your dog gets picked up and dropped off. Goes to my training field or other suitable walks in the local area, where they can meet other friendly dogs, learning how to chill and interact appropriately. I also have space on these days for a dog that wants some individual attention or needs a space to run around.
Please get in contact if you would like to discuss your dogs individual needs.

It’s sad when you have to say goodbye to a client. Poppy and griffin’s owner is moving back to wales for her retirement, which means these two will not be coming to classes. Poppy is retired now but she started at Milnersmutts 7 years ago and griffin attended puppy classes all the way through to advanced agility class. We will hopefully see griffin and his owner at shows throughout the year . But for now good bye and Good luck in your new home.

When starting agility, it’s way more than just jumping jumps, going through tunnels and over contact equipment. It involves dog and handler working as a team, the handler directs the dog around a course and the dog listens to cues and performs the behaviour.

Dogs need to have several elements of fitness to perform the most basic sequences this includes cardiovascular, balance, Coordination and strength. Along with these elements dogs need to have a basic understanding of how to learn. Then there is the handler who needs to do several things at once, remember the sequence/course, timing/cueing and be able to move (distance handlers use there body just in a different way). Most of all both needs enthusiasm.

When you book a Milnersmutts course we gradually build up these skills in both humans and dogs, all the while the dogs are learning what is required before they start using equipment. Foundations are key, it also means your dogs will build all the fitness elements above before any impact occurs. Good foundations means that when they go onto the equipment they have all the skills they need.

I want you and your dog to be safe, healthy but have fun!

Next agility course will start soon!!

Building confidence and desire to work starts from the very first time that you train your dog! Foundations are the key to building confidence, short sessions, rewarding loads, this works well for c**ker spaniels (some breeds can tolerate longer sessions). Desire to work is all about joy and fun! Whether training agility, obedience, hoopers or any dog sport, breaking down the skills in small bite size sessions means the dog retains the information and increases their desire to work more! Here ivy is working on her seesaw stop criteria she has only being doing this for a few sessions but the joy is quite evident from that wagging tail!
Short sessions and making it fun is key!

Can I remind people that those interested in agility classes with their dogs, need to ensure their dogs are physical fit and healthy, and have a reasonable level of obedience this includes a stay, recall around dogs and good focus for their owner when off lead . Dogs should wear a flat close fitting collar during their class or 1-2-1 (this is non-negotiable for safety reasons)
Owners should be aware that their will be an element of movement from themselves and appropriate footwear for the ground conditions should be worn, at this time of year football or rugby boots in the summer a good cross country trainer. Walking boots/shoes, wellies and sandals are not appropriate.

If you are not sure whether your dog is right for an agility class you can book a 1-2-1 to work on their skills without distractions
