Meet Barley - First session … Barley has been reacting at every dog on walks, lunging and barking at them and alongside that has been pulling her owner towards what she wants on walks to smell or investigate. In this assessment session we were able to perfect the lead walk so Barley understood lead pressure better, even following her owner rather than leading her. We introduced her to Betsy both walking and sat close to each other and we had no reaction, Barleys owner felt more confident and as a result so did Barley. We did some more work around Piper and while she was running around Barley didn’t react once… overall we had a great session and I can’t wait to see what she does over the coming months! While it was rainy and quiet at the forest we used the time to get used to the new equipment and what’s expected while I’m pushing it 🤗

Days like these, things got a bit hectic this week for us as a family and the dogs didn’t spend much time with me so it’s really nice to be able to be together in the garden today relaxing and enjoying family time 💯🥰 Being busy affects Piper more than Betsy as she’s super sensitive and likes her routines, so now I’m back home she’s following me around like crazy today, back to normal soon though 🐕

Murphy the rescue! This gorgeous dog’s owner contacted me after having him for 5 weeks and realising he was dog reactive and resource guarding his space so we spent some time discussing the issues and watching him around other dogs, then found he also chased cats 😂 We tackled lead pressure awareness and also tension forming through the lead via the owner (which she was aware of but had got in a habit) so we started heading for the other dogs after working on that. Being aware of the dog’s space needed to prevent reaction, creating space for the dog and also using our body to indicate we are the first in line to protect our dogs was what we worked on. Quite an easy fix this one… These two came to me saying there was just a small problem where the dog wouldn’t sit and stay so I asked to see how well the dog walked on the lead. The answer was yes she thought she walked well on the lead after changing to a figure of 8 lead before she came to me, this might seem very small but we made a couple of changes to how we walk the dog, we didn’t let her get in front of us and continually sniff the floor while she was walking and hey presto - then she would sit and stay. Rules and boundaries for dogs are essential if you want your dog to respect and obey you when training, in this case even this highest value food wouldn’t work, until we put in solid rules and boundaries for the walk. Training doesn’t have to look formal, it’s doesn’t always have to look like you’re ’doing something’ and sometimes the little things are the things that need addressing. The little things so many others take for granted are really massive problems for others, like sitting down with another person or dog in a garden. Jaz and Reg just came back from holiday where having a drink in a pub became unbearable because he was so vocal about other dogs and people around and was trying to lunge and get to them. So after we made sure that our lead walking was on point today and the dog was totally in following mode, we sat down with different dogs to proof a better behaviour from Reg. Obedience, Behaviour & Recall group finished last Sunday and how proud was I at the overall improvement of every single member of the group? So so proud, they took on board every piece of advice about reactivity, barking, attention seeking behaviour, control and leadership and also engagement. First session of the 5 week group we didn’t get a peaceful minute until 45 minutes in, there was blow ups, barking and whining but we didn’t give up. We progressed weekly and eventually got to complete obedience tasks around each other, if you know how hard it is to have a dog that is reactive to any kind of movement you will know how amazing this video is of week 5 … I’ve left the reel with original audio, the comments and the commands, because what you can’t hear is ? Barking, that’s right there’s no reactions from the dogs, despite a lot of movement happening all around 💪🏼🐕 So yes I’m super proud of their progress. Clay - nervous, reactive and a lead puller! This was not an easy fix, I have worked with his owners for the last 7 weeks and the main reason we have been able to get results like this is because they have been consistent with their training. Yesterday our Puppy Group course finished again and what a great morning it was, it looked beautiful and sunny but it was still very cold out! Finishers practised that perfect recall by following through with the command, making sure we didn’t repeat any commands making the dog ignore us. We looked at how well everyone had progressed with: Middle Leave it Place Heel Recall Being neutral around other dogs. No jumping up Everyone did such a great job, you can see how committed these puppy owners are about having a well behaved and enjoyable dog, hope to see them all very soon for the next installment of the Obedience programme! We have to stop homing rescue dogs with people who think that loving a dog will fix its past. So often I’m seeing absolute shaking wrecks of dogs who have been pulled off the streets of Romania or Greece to name a couple, they’ve been homed by video messages or FaceTimes and handed over to someone at a junction on the motorway! The people aren’t vetted or seen to be a good fit for a dog who usually has very primal instincts and has been well used to barking, bearing its teeth, growling or maybe even biting to claim its own space, guard its food or protect itself from harm. Taken into a home environment where they can’t escape and then given affection when they’re feeling nervous, stroked on the head when they’re barking or trying to escape off the lead, then redirecting their frustration at the handler is so often the case. We need to stop offloading these dogs so urgently and not seeing if the humans think the dogs the right fit for them, we need to see if the human is the right fit for the dog in front of us. You cannot fix a dogs past, they live in the present moment, they don’t feel sorry for themselves, they live to better their circumstances, seek out pleasure and find opportunity.
