It’s definitely an air con kinda day! Please be careful bringing your dogs for their groom. It’s not wise to walk them to us as they can get heat exhaustion before we’ve even started. Travel in a car with air con or windows open is best 🐾🐾

Double coats play a role but DO NOT magically cool a dog down. Let’s break it down and let’s remember a one size (quite literally) doesn’t fit all.

The undercoat traps air against the skin. If that air is cool or there is a breeze this will be very effective in helping our dogs. When they leave the home where the air is cool and enter 22c heat that undercoat will help to keep them cool for sometime and those guard hairs (the top coat) will act like leaves on a tree - shade. BUT as the air becomes hot the undercoat will move and trap warm air against the skin and the guard hairs will make it difficult for that warm air to leave unless it’s windy. So this double coat will only be effective if it can move (very regular grooming needed) AND the weather is windy. Otherwise it’ll keep the dog cooler for longer but then heat them up making it hard for heat to escape.

But the double coat does protect that fragile skin, so if you keep it well maintained, your dog is not overweight, you don’t subject them to hot temperatures, and they aren’t a giant breed who is a bigger risk of overheating. Then clipping is not necessary, especially if they are young (older dogs find it harder to thermoregulate).

Remember that double coat keeps them warm in the winter, how many hot days do we get here in the U.K.?! Can you make more effort to groom/get them groomed, provide a fan, plenty of cold water drinking options, get their weight down, and avoid waking when over 20c? If so then clipping is potentially not necessary!

If there is existing skin disease clipping will help you to apply topical products, if there isn’t clipping can expose fragile skin. Some undercoat must be left to protect it. And you have to be prepared to apply sunscreen and potentially be ready for an increase risk of skin disease.

For some the guard hairs can take 4 years to grow back! Yes that may look aesthetically unpleasant. That’ll also mean less protection against the wet and dirt. They’ll need a winter coat on. The double coat helps them maintain optimum body temperature.

Like everyone I.e. neutering there is not a one size fits all. You need to assess every dog, here is an example. I was asked would you clip a double coated breed who appears to be struggling with the heat and has cancer and not predicted to survive past the summer, well yes I would clip if all other cooling options have been explored. But generally it’s not a yes for all you need to ask questions, discuss pro’s and con’s. But ultimately a clipped coat will cool but could mean other problems may arise…

One of the wards that Vera visits is designated for young people, but normally most of the patients are over 50. Today, we met this lovely young lady who was about to go home having had a very complex cardiac procedure. We have agreed that she will try to arrange follow up apointments for Vera's visiting times so they can meet up again!

Customer update

As most of you are aware, my daughter Megan went into hospital on Monday for scheduled heart surgery on Tuesday morning. There were complications once they had taken her into theatre and so the surgery was cancelled. Other medical treatment is now required before the heart surgery so there may be further disruption to service, I.e. appointments rescheduled etc, during April and possibly into the first week or so of May.

I would like to thank everyone who has been understanding so far and sent lovely well wishes 😍😍 Sending my apologies in advance of any mishaps or messages unanswered. This has been a rollercoaster of a week and so my brain isn’t functioning as it should. I appreciate you all and will ensure that all your lovely doggies get what they need asap.

Thanks for reading, from a very tired mumma x

Customer Notice

We will be closed for all business on 2nd & 3rd April and then operating a limited service from 4th - 12th April. Messages and calls will still be answered so if you have an enquiry please still send it.

Price increase

From 1st April, our prices will be increased for all dog grooming services. As all dogs and their grooms are individual to them, all customers who have an appointment already will be notified of their new price. Anyone without an appointment will see the new price in their booking confirmation but can also get in touch to ask.

Pet sitting/dog walking: There will be no increase to local pet sits/home visits or dog walking but bank holidays will now be charged at time and half and Christmas/New years day will be double time. Pet sits further afield from Corsley & Chapmanslade will have a slight increase to cover fuel costs.

We hope you all have a lovely Easter weekend! Best wishes, Dee & Harry 🐣

Elmo has now been assessed by our vet and we are relieved to have found he has a slightly wonky jaw (which is just cosmetic) but is otherwise just fine β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή

This means we are now able to look for his adoptive home. Elmo loves everyone and happily snuggles up with his foster Mum, whilst also really enjoying the company of the six other rescue dogs in his foster home. He’s a smashing little boy who’s just had a bit of a bumpy start!

You can read more about him and apply here - https://dogsfriends.me.uk/df-dogs/elmo/

Little Bear (12 weeks old, cross breed) - looking for a kind, committed and active home 🀞🏻

Little Bear was adopted when he was 9 weeks old, but was very sadly returned a few days later. We have kept him in foster care for a couple of weeks to allow him to decompress and are now starting the search for a loving family 🌈

Needless to say, his new home must be 100% committed to raising a puppy, as he needs (and deserves) stability. You can read more about him here - https://dogsfriends.me.uk/df-dogs/little-bear/
