Ludlow Farm is run by proprietor Patsy Day who has been involved in many spheres of the equestrian world since her pony club days and professionally for over forty years. A BHS qualified instructor, Patsy has extensive experience dealing with all types of horses. She has bought, sold, broken, schooled, produced and competed a tremendous variety of horses throughout her life. Her first love was eventing and she produced young event horses through the grades for their owners. Her interest in Dressage has grown more over the years and she initially trained with Stephen Clarke.
For many years she has specialised with problem horses and those with complicated brains which is probably where her greatest skills lie. Her philosophy is to keep things simple, to understand the different types of brain and attitude with each horse and work accordingly. Some need incredible time and patience to gain trust; some need firmness and authority, especially if they need to regain respect. There is little new with horse whisperers or such techniques; this is just equine psychology by a different name. Horsemen have been using such techniques for hundreds of years. The skill is in the understanding of the different individuals and applying the correct technique. These animals can be wonderfully biddable and submissive if they are understood and trained correctly. Respect of each other is vital.
As far as training from the saddle, the golden rule is the old rule – ‘ride your horse forward and keep him straight’. Nothing forced – allow the horse to find his own balance, even if he has to wobble in the process. When he understands softness to contact and can carry himself and you, the outline will come naturally (no fiddling!). Some find it easier than others, some are naturals. Progression of training is determined by improving physical ability as much as the horse’s ability to understand.
After selling a large equestrian centre in the midlands, Patsy has returned to her roots on her final adventure. For the past two years she has been completely refurbishing her beloved Ludlow Farm. Nestled between Warminster and Longleat on a quiet lane leading to Longleat Forest, this is planned to be a centre of excellence. There are two newly built arenas and a small yard of 15 stables surrounded by 27 acres of pasture (see pinned post). Already underway are regular weekly clinics with Patsy and she also offers individual private tuition. Future clinics are already in the pipeline with renowned trainers of high repute e.g. Eric Winter and Hannah Biggs. Some stables are available for DIY or assisted DIY livery.
