Owned and run by Patsy Day, Ludlow Farm nestles in a sheltered valley just outside Warminster, with direct access into Longleat Forest offering miles of off-road hacking. It is less than a mile from the A36 Warminster bypass (Bath to Salisbury road). Since moving there over 6 years ago, Patsy has almost completed total refurbishment of the farm. This includes construction of the 65m x 25m light an

d airy indoor and 60m x 30m outdoor floodlit arenas. Patsy has been involved with the equestrian world since her pony club days in the late 1960’s and went onto gain BHS qualifications (and her Pony Club 'A' Test) in the late 70's. She initially trained with Stephen Clarke and had the opportunity to be taught on two of his Grand Prix horses. In her 20’s her first love was eventing (when affiliated eventing was run by the British Horse Society and the lowest level was Novice). She was often offered rides on ‘sticky’ horses as seemed able to persuade them around a XC course. She has successfully trained, produced, ridden and competed a very wide variety of horses. Gradually she became more involved with producing younger horses in all disciplines and selling them on. Throughout, her ethos has been to work with each individual equine mind, maintaining consistency and clarity. Patsy trains them to balance and carry themselves; nothing is manufactured, fiddled or forced – the simple adage of ‘ride your horse forward and keep him straight’ is a golden rule. Response, rideability, softness and harmony are all key goals. For over 20 years, before moving back to Wiltshire, Patsy owned a large yard in Derbyshire which she built up from scratch. Along with running both affiliated and unaffiliated dressage and show-jumping competitions, breaking, schooling, sorting horse and rider problems, Patsy frequently travelled to Ireland (in their heyday of breeding) and over 20 years, successfully sourced over a thousand young horses to bring back to her Derbyshire yard where they were broken and brought on to sell into various disciplines. Many of you have owned/still own a ‘Stubley’ horse which started its ridden life at Stubley Hollow in Derbyshire. Many of these horses have turned into your best friend and many went onto be champions in their specialist field. Patsy’s horses have been her greatest teachers and the main source of her depth of knowledge. She has ridden literally many hundreds of different types and most have taught her something – especially the difficult ones! Since down-sizing to Ludlow, Patsy now offers training to riders on their own horses being able to use her wealth of experience to help riders learn the importance of establishing correct basic training. Remember the tortoise beat the hare…and when the foundations are correct, a horse develops the correct physique and what follows is so much easier and successful for both horse and rider. Patsy is BHS qualified, fully insured, has judged unaffiliated dressage to medium level, is an experienced course builder (trained by Maureen Summers – Hickstead course designer) and judged hunters and youngstock at county level. She was also a Pony Club instructress and examiner for over 30 years. If you would like more info about anything that happens at Ludlow Farm, please give Patsy a call or message her on 07802 586537.

"I died today.
I was found by a kind, sweet woman who does wildlife rescue.
I was so sick, I could barely open my eyes.
She took me inside, cradling me in her warm arms, and made me warm and comfortable.
I opened my eyes and looked at her and thanked her for making my last few minutes as comfortable as possible.
But I was too sick to keep fighting anymore.
I had eaten a mouse that was poisoned, and it made me very sick.
I closed my yellow eyes for the last time and went somewhere else.
Please, all I ask is never use poison to kill the mice.
Poison kills owls, like me.
All I wanted was a mouse for dinner.

Stop the use of poison for rats or mice.
Live traps are the best to use. Catch and release.
It only takes one share to spread the word."

Charlotte Du Jardin, The Abuse, The Surprise, The Timing, The Implications, The Travesty

A lot happening in equestrian sport this week, so here are some points that might provide some food for thought:

Number One:

Violence against horses in the name of “training” is NEVER ok – This applies whether you are an owner/rider, trainer, vet or any other professional, amateur, professional, Olympian or otherwise.

Number Two:

Is it really surprising? Have the signs not been there, not just with this rider, but with so many others? Do the horses not tell us? Why have so many people not seen or have excused the blue tongues, blood, gaping mouths and the many more conflict behaviors from these horses, all of which is well documented and readily available for learning about via the science of behavior.

Number Three:

The Timing: Regardless of timing or strategy of timing, it still does not negate the horrific abuse that was almost certainly not a one off.

For anyone to excuse this abuse, or make it about anything else other than the abuse, should take a good look in the mirror and examine their ethics. This was a high profile Olympian, a role model for many, a spokesperson for a global horse welfare organization, Brooke, and there is NO excuse for her behavior.

However, when it comes to the timing, there is no doubt that in an Olympic year, a scandal around someone has been untouchable up until now, is a pivotal moment for equestrian sport, as the mainstream media and public are now aware of what is happening.

A possible contributing factor to the timing would be the fact that the FEI have a long history of NOT dealing with horse abuse in any meaningful way – most recently demonstrated in their handling of the Helgstrand, Parra, Smith, Strasser and Cassoe cases to name but a few. Not to mention allowing the blue tongues of Kittel and Fry to be medal winners and Olympic riders for Paris!

Their strategies have clearly been to either sweep it under the rug, do nothing and hope it will pass or create a campaign with emotive music and words that make it seem like they care – most recently being “Be A Guardian” and “A Bond Like No Other”.

With the release of this video at this time, the FEI are no longer in control of the narrative as they are unable to bribe, collude with, dismiss or intimidate the mainstream media or public.

As for the whistleblowers, we can assure you that it takes bravery to go up against the system – with the NDAs, threats of legal action, fear of reprisal by the equestrian world and more, there are a lot of deterrents in place to protect the abuse that is widespread in the world of equestrian sport.

Number Four:

What does this mean for the future of the sport?

Well, we don’t think there is any stuffing this genie back in the bottle, but there is still a lot of unknowns.

Is removing equestrian events from the Olympics a likely outcome? PETA are campaigning for it, and it may not necessarily be a bad thing, considering the FEI’s history of “waiting it out” and then business as usual, much like they did after the Tokyo games.

Will this be the wake up call that the world of equestrianism needs – we all know it is not just FEI Dressage, but also showjumping, eventing, vaulting, endurance, driving etc., as well as equally horrific practices happening under AQHA jurisdictions, Racing Authorities, Polo, rodeo and any other number of “sports” where horses are involved.

And Finally, the Travesty of it All:

This is the saddest part – all of this could have been avoided if only the existing rules had been enforced and maintained over the past several decades, instead of the stripping away of elements that protected the horses and made horse welfare a central part of judging and being a skilled rider.

We now have a deeply divided equestrian community, the spreading of abusive riding practices such as rollkur, gadgets, harsh bits and more, across all levels and all disciplines through emulating these “top” riders.

Bringing this to a bigger audience and media has also centered around destroying one person, who was thrown under the bus by her “colleagues” whom, we know, are all equally as guilty of using these methods, but fled like rats from a sinking ship.

While there is no excuse for her behavior, and she must accept personal responsibility for her choices, this is still not a situation we would wish on anyone.

For our part, we can only hope that there are valuable lessons to be learned by all and that after the storm, there will be some level of genuine effort to address the underlying reason why all of this has happened – abusing the horses that are the bedrock of the industry and deserve so, so, so, so much better!

PART-TIME WORK (Warminster)
- Either for someone wanting to keep their horse/s in a super yard with fab facilites (indoor and outdoor international size arenas) and great off road hacking… OR without a horse, but able to provide assisted livery to some DIY liveries (one full) at the yard. Earnings will depend on whether you’d like a stable or not. Self employed status. Having your own horse or horses on the yard would probably make the work easier and quicker and help with your travel expenses.
Work is usually approximately 1 to 2 hrs/day (fairly flexible) with more usually available and some riding if capable and you’d like.
Easy going clients who need reliability.
For more information, please call or msg Patsy on 07802 586537
Ideally to start mid/end of June.

Our Story...

Ludlow Farm is run by proprietor Patsy Day who has been involved in many spheres of the equestrian world since her pony club days and professionally for over forty years. A BHS qualified instructor, Patsy has extensive experience dealing with all types of horses. She has bought, sold, broken, schooled, produced and competed a tremendous variety of horses throughout her life. Her first love was eventing and she produced young event horses through the grades for their owners. Her interest in Dressage has grown more over the years and she initially trained with Stephen Clarke.

For many years she has specialised with problem horses and those with complicated brains which is probably where her greatest skills lie. Her philosophy is to keep things simple, to understand the different types of brain and attitude with each horse and work accordingly. Some need incredible time and patience to gain trust; some need firmness and authority, especially if they need to regain respect. There is little new with horse whisperers or such techniques; this is just equine psychology by a different name. Horsemen have been using such techniques for hundreds of years. The skill is in the understanding of the different individuals and applying the correct technique. These animals can be wonderfully biddable and submissive if they are understood and trained correctly. Respect of each other is vital.

As far as training from the saddle, the golden rule is the old rule – ‘ride your horse forward and keep him straight’. Nothing forced – allow the horse to find his own balance, even if he has to wobble in the process. When he understands softness to contact and can carry himself and you, the outline will come naturally (no fiddling!). Some find it easier than others, some are naturals. Progression of training is determined by improving physical ability as much as the horse’s ability to understand.

After selling a large equestrian centre in the midlands, Patsy has returned to her roots on her final adventure. For the past two years she has been completely refurbishing her beloved Ludlow Farm. Nestled between Warminster and Longleat on a quiet lane leading to Longleat Forest, this is planned to be a centre of excellence. There are two newly built arenas and a small yard of 15 stables surrounded by 27 acres of pasture (see pinned post). Already underway are regular weekly clinics with Patsy and she also offers individual private tuition. Future clinics are already in the pipeline with renowned trainers of high repute e.g. Eric Winter and Hannah Biggs. Some stables are available for DIY or assisted DIY livery.
